i use a good cutting mouth call that is raspy i just yelp and cutt if u can cutt u can bring any gobbler in even if he is being stubbornyou can get them to come in i called in 5 turkeys last year and everyone i called at came in. i do change mouth calls every year.
@suferwill808 it actually does I play sax too.. you're forcing the reed of a sax to the top of the mouth, same as a turkey call, although playing the sax would be more like cutt'n
This guy not only gives a great explanation of how- for all you just getting into gobbler hunting- listen to his advice on how and when to use each calls. turkey's are just like us, each is unique so don't be afraid to change pitch if your not getting any response. sometimes thats all it takes its a little changeup
Best to start with a shotgun- a turkey's vision ( a self defense trait) is unbelievable. they see 250 yds like we see 20. the extra movement of drawing your bow makes it incredible hard to get in close and get that turkey.
once you get that understanding of how to get 'em in close and move without spooking them, then you can move on to bow hunting them.
hey yeah just soes yall know i did learn to be really good from this guy, but i got a new call and this year i got an HS strut and they are made of wood do NOT bend them, they will nap and your cannot fix them. and thanx mddale31 for all the tips
One thing you can do instead of switching them is to fill a cup with Listerene, or other mouthwash, and put your calls in the cup for anywhere from a couple hours, to a couple days. Afterwards, if you want, you can wash them with soap and rinse. This should kill all the bacteria, and make it taste good :)
I used my mouth call today (and BTW I'm 11) and I called in a HUGE gobbler in the mid 20 pounds while using this technique for mouth calling but MISSED him! I just shook it off though.
Well turns out mouth calling is a perishable skill. Used to be real good with one but i just tried my first call in what must be 5 years and shot the damn thing across the room.
Thanks for the info! The first few years I used a mouth call, when I first STARTED huntin' turkey, (a mistake, I know. : ( Probably scared 'em all off! None gobbled, naturally! I made some of THE weirdest sounds you ever heard in the woods! : S Oh well, you hunt, you learn, right. Gonna try a gobble call in the morning, along with a slate, box, and mouth call. Will let ya know how it turns out! Where are ya huntin' at?
