I agree with the chilean guy. He DEFINTELY looks white to me. But some people here just love to overestimate the indigenous contribution to the population.
@LoneCuetlachtli their is no such thing as race accept the Human race, however with that said we all know in the real world people see color. At least the majority of the world does. If you see a dark skin person usually people associate them with the black race. However you can also look at genetic features such as hair, lips, & nose to also make a determination. If they are light skin like Rosario Dawson you can look at nose lips & tell she is not a true Latina compared to Anahi Giovanna
I am Proud to Be Puerto Rican Una "BORICUA" with such a Rich Culture.
Latino Y Latina "Hispanic" African American are names from the American white people who are also very diverse in culture some just do not express themselves with such grace as All Spanish Traditionally Families DO!
Hispanic/Latino is not considered a race, because if all Hispanics checked off “Hispanic” on the census it would throw off all of the data – Hispanics can be of any race. Argentines are Hispanic but the majority of them are racially White. How can you take a White Argentine and a Black Dominican and say they are the same race? It doesn’t make sense. The whole Hispanic concept is an ethnic term designed to lump all Spanish-speaking people into one group.
A comment about the first speaker from "Chile" He is right. When he is in Chile he is "white" The Mapuche people in Chile and Argentina have distinguished themselves strongly from the "Chileans and Argentinians because of ethnic difference. The Mapuche are the First Nations/indigenous peoples and there is a lot of friction between regular Chileans and the Mapuche. Rac and ethnicity are very complex. Thanks Carlos for speaking out and asking questions of this subject. Great job!!
A Hispanic/Latino can be of any racial origin in the world. One only needs to be born in a native Spanish speaking country to be classified as Hispanic by the U.S classification system. This is the reason why there is no particular "look" to be a Hispanic. With that being said, there is no such thing as purity of race in this planet. Whether you are from the Congo in Africa, the Amazon forest in South America, or in the Scandinavian peninsula of Northern Europe.
The people who were slaved by Hispanics/Latinos now have to be considered as one of them?
Africans and Native peoples who speak Spanish, we have the right to define WHo We Are, we want to take pride on our true heritage.
The racist U.S. government is implying that Spanish speaking people must be one ethnic group, then why they don't put Black and White people who speak English as Anglos alltogether?
I think you may have misunderstood what I said. Someone said they found it hard to call themselves "Hispanic" and I said if they found it hard, why do it since in essence it doesn't have a racial value and simply put everyone under one group for speaking Spanish.
I don't believe in the "Hispanic/Latino" terminology, I believe people should be able to identify as they chose without being force fed this bullshit label.
@CarlosDCblog Because, of a person's appearance (skin tone, eye color, hair texture, facial features, and etc). I mean, there's a lot of African Americans that have European ancestors and also the other way around for European Americans. But, it's what appearance you look like, I guess that determines a person's race.
@DimmuBorgir007 look up hispania 200 ad(modern day spain and portugal)(caucasion migrated from the north cold of europe thats how they developed their pale skin)
and when i mean castizo i am just counting anyone with nominal native admixture not the exact meaning of 25% as i know you could not be meaning as well
i'm black and i watched and i thought i was interesting and informative in certain instances but i think that CNN once again watered it down just like they did 'black in america'...but i am happy that they at least took a step towards getting a dialogue started...also i love the comment the woman made about being a person of color because that's in fact what we, as they say, "minorities" are...people of color
But is that not unsettling though to refer to so called latinos as people of color ,because remember many latinos are not people of color meaning many are white..but at the same time many are people of color that is why i do not like to use that broad stroke because it paints an inaccurate picture.
Something is really wrong this dude. He considers himself WHITE! He should look into the mirror again. Racial Hispanic/Latino are Indian or of some Asian extract who came over here over 2000 years again.
The individual in the video clearly has Indigenous features. Most Chileans identify with "White" because their skin color is "White" but the Indigenous features are very strong like the Chilean in this video.
Chileans have a lot of Irish there their first president was Irish the Western European Race is Romano-Celts the Eastern European Race are Greco-Roman world
Chile does not have a lot of Irish. It just so happens that during their early political stages some Irish have made a strong contribution to their society.
In Chile, there are many Croatians, but other than that most Chileans look like the guy in this video or Indigenous. About 30% of the country is European (Croatian, German, Spaniards).
The only countries where the majority are mainly European is Uruguay and Argentina.
I recommend you watch this video "No somos Latinos - Cuarteto de Nos".
Again, I really do have a great respect for the Indigenous communities but in Uruguay there are few if not anymore Charrua's that exist.
Argentinians have a different story since they all think they are European. Really, only around 40-50% of Argentina is pure European. The rest is Mestizo or Castizo.
And Chile is majority Mestizo but there are a number that have straight European ancestry.
If the USA used the old caste system of Colonial latin america i would guess about 30% of the white population would be castizo not to mention in a study done on white americans called "Afro-european admixture USA" about 30% of white americans have any where from 2%-20% african admixture so i would say about only about a similar amount of white americans maybe 40% are straight european and that number is that high because of all the euro immigration here in the 19 th and early 20th century
@Charrua1988...You raised an interesting point. You said that "only 40-50% of Argentina is pure European. The rest is Mestizo or Castizo." Given that you're from the country that's right across Buenos Aires from the Rio de la Plata, I must admit your comment carries a great degree of credibility. I know that Argentineans see themselves as mostly white, but you being Uruguayan can certainly shed some light on the whiteness (or darkness) of your neighbors, the Argentineans.
I'm Uruguayan-American and if you know the history of Uruguay you would know that the Charrua's here were exterminated from their land. If the Spaniards were still colonizing, the caste system would refer to me as a "Castizo".
Meaning that i'm 75%-80 European 20-25% Indigenous (most likely from Argentine Native).
But most people think i'm Italian or from Spain.
Regardless, it's very hard for me in the U.S to label myself as Hispanic or Latino.
If its hard for you to label yourself "Hispanic/Latino" here in the U.S. then why do it? Its not like it has a racial value. You are predominantly European by ancestry and that is the way it is.
Everyone is Chilean, but NOT everyone is of the same class. In Latin America you can inhabit a LOWER class simply because you are darker. Now tell me, how often does that happen in the U.S.? It does, but to a much, much less degree.
correction: I meant that you can inhabit a lower class than your siblings, who might be "fairer" than you. Most siblings in America grow up to inhabit similar socioeconomic brackets, not so much the case in Latin America.
Thought the first guy is correct in chile there is no latinos e.g it does not matter, that is a good point ,though i challenge the notion that latino/hispanic is a culutre rather it is just a generic term used to describe a origin e.g latino/hispanic is not really meant to represent a culture but many people keep hanging the culture tag on it!
Is that guy serious? Latino/hispanic is the same thing, it applies european heritage not "because I descend from Latino America." Mixed or not his origins come from here not Southern Europe.
