Also, swing tackle? miss and its an instant yellow. Miss and hit the player. Red card. I would never coach people to swing. I have done it in a match and yes it is effective if done correctly but IMO it is not worth the risk.

dude i dont live in america but if varsity is like your college team.. dont listen to this, the jabbing tackle.. shouldnt be used, a swinging tackle that just leaves you open and half the time you wont make the tackle, you should like slide the stick in not swing, and if your up against anyone good you will never go through there legs, sorry just give you a little bit of help, i live in australia and field hockey is quite big here

In America we play on grass for practice and on turf for games because grass is harder to play on.
