Suck it, Glee Prom Queen episode! Now this is how you do a "gay kid gets voted prom queen as a cruel joke, only to accept it and rise above it" story line
@IAmThatHero1 I am Glee fan and do not even watch Ugly Betty, but this version is much, much better. I keep watching Justin scenes on here and find him kind of all sorts of awesome.
I watched Glee and straight away remembered, well didn't Ugly betty do this exact thing? and I'm pretty sure ugly betty handled it ALOT better than Glee did...
I miss Ugly Betty.. I hope Glee get called out for this properly because Betty was such an under-rated show. It broke down those barriers without being preachy or over bearing like Glee has come to be.
Comparing the two scenes though, Ugly Betty's was more preachy. It seems like they neutered the "gay queen" thing by making it more about his mother while Kurt's scene really hammered home how horrible subtler forms of homophobia can be and even the strongest of people can break down. I actually like how Glee handled the concept more.
@EuroMIX2 I won't even allow the dis-respect. How was this preachy? He wasn't even out as gay at the time of this which makes it more heart breaking for him and his family. This was showing him turning around and laughing in the face of his tormentors, showing that he was stronger. If we had more role models for the gay youth and less of that victimised troll Kurt, gay suicide wouldn't be so high.
The Glee episode is equally crushing because Kurt is lead to believe that some progress has been made towards acceptance and people simply don't care, but his hopes are ruined when he realises that, true to life, when people can't voice their opinions openly they do it in sneakier and much more subtle ways.
How does having your life threatened make you a victimised troll exactly?
Furthermore, I'm a gay man; not a teen but I am young. Kurt's storyline is one of the few things in the world that has helped me barely hold back from committing suicide myself. His resilience, hope and drive is what helps give me strength, so please think first before you try to speak for every gay youth out there as if you know what they are all thinking and feeling because you obviously don't.
@EuroMIX2 Well things do touch people different ways, all I am saying is I hate how Glee just lets him be comfortable being the victim. We need stronger role models like this and I know everyone (including me) might not have the wit to pull Justin's speech off but it's a lot better message than crying over it. You are your own person, take control of your life and look honestly if this is helping you then that is great and I am not knocking that. I am just saying Kurt's character is weak for me.
Forget it, you are probably right. I'm wrong about everything anyway. I give up trying to have an opinion because my very existence is wrong. You are right, a character that is one of the only things that gives me any slither of hope must be wrong, "weak", whatever. If Glee were so good then it could have saved me from what I'm about to do, but it can't. Goodbye.
I already told you that you were correct. You are obviously right. I need to stop foolishly responding to people like my opinion actually matters. It's difficult you'll understand because a small part of my mind keeps playing up and telling me to say something when I know that I shouldn't. I'm getting there. Soon... I know what I have to do.
@MarrrlyZ Agreed. I'm all for tv shows highlighting issues such as bullying and homophobia but Glee could have shown some originality and not just hijacked a scene from Ugly Betty!
It's not like the creators of Ugly Betty own the rights to the "gay guy is voted as prom queen as a cruel joke" though. I'm sure lots of shows use similar ideas, but that's no reason to claim that they are ripping each other off.
that was an awesome scene....I never really watched Ugly Betty....did Justin ever come out? I always assumed he was gay but I have also had friends who were quite....fabulous...who were not gay....just curious for those who actually watched the show.
@RyeEncoke he was been going through an emotional journey and has now got a boyfriend but hasn't come out to his family. There's only a couple of episodes left before the show ends.
I cried my eyes out so bad... this changed my perception on life. if only i was that strong and brave and sassy ;)
Thank You Ugly Betty, you changed my life x
