After viewing the entire scene and story I have to say even though it sounds like "Don't", the logical progress of the story would suggest that "Look" is the correct term, because the mermaid princess chapter harbours two main storys, Clara's possible sexual abuse/pregnancy and Diana's trauma into being scolded by hoffman for the fish, the more powerful story seems to evidently be Clara's and I think it would have pushed the boundaries to create two sexual deviances within one chapter.
@reiome Actually I think there may be 3 sexual abuses in the chapter. The 3rd being Jennifer's own abuse by Diana. The last is very speculative, but I think that Diana with the dirty rag, falling onto Jennifer on the bed may suggest it. Remember that Jennifer was actually not big as she appears to us, but tinier than Diana. Diana's intent may have just been the humiliation of Jennifer for seeing Diana's shame, not for sexual kicks for herself. But it would fit the theme of the chapter
Even though the 1st time I saw this in the game I thought the subs were wrong,If you think about it,it wouldn't make sense for him to say option B. Yes, he's a dirty old man, I won't deny it,but in that scene he's talking about the aquarium (which Diana comments about being empty at the begging of the chapter) and the missing Koi that belonged to Hoffman. And why would he say "look"? because he wants her to stop crying and give him the name of the responsible who stole his fish. so, yeah it's A.
It sounds more like he's saying "don't," not "look." I also agree it makes a lot more sense. I don't understand why he would be commenting on Diana's LOOKS; he himself states she is the prettiest of all the orphans.
I actually looked away for all but the last two times (for A and B) because I didn't want to be influenced or whatever, and I most certainly heard "don't". It is a little tricky because they've all got strange accents, but my vote is in for B.
Also, Mr. Hoffman is a total creeper and pedo. All of the evidence makes sense to any logical person.
If you watch it while reading the "Dont" you're mind will most certainly change the like to done. I did it both ways reading the subtitles, when I did it sounded like Dont. When I put my ear real close to my speakers and didn't look at subtitles every time I heard "Like" so I will go with 'A'. It only sounds like 'Dont' if you want it to, and trick yourself into it sounding like 'Dont'.
I can honestly say it sounds like "B". First of all if you look at his character, he's a pedophile. If you don't look at the words just look at his actions, he's rubbing her. So don't you think "if you don't like that" sounds logical?
it kinda sounds like both, it depends how you see it, the fact that she is crying makes people think A but if you were blind and were listing to it, it does sound like B
"don't?" does not really sound well because their may be some sort of wordiness or sentence fragment. I was quite particular in sentence constructioning
I hate to answer you like this, but with how quietly he says it and with how loud Diana's crying at that moment, it's really hard to tell. So I'm gonna stick with he said "Look" like the subtitles say.
I listened without the subtitles the first time, to be honest, without the subtitles, I heard don't. Then again, I don't see a reason why he would say don't. But I don't see a reason why he would say look either. It could go either way, I guess. Amazing how one word changes everything. (She could be changing her memory again, but still, it could be either or)
I'll go with choice B. I hear the 'D' sound in 'Don't' when I'm listening to all of them. Plus, it makes sense that he says that since he rubs his old hands all over Diana like that and she's crying her eyes out.
It's A. I think the problem is that he's not quite pronouncing the "L" in look. I'm hearing the 'ook" part, but the first part does sound "D"-ish. So I'm coming up with "if you do'ook" like that. I think it's supposed to be "look".
I kinda want it to be "B" though. This scene doesn't really need the extra creepyness, but it fits with something Hoffman would say. Perhaps it's meant to sound ambiguous, as another part of Jennifer "watering down" her memories.
Why do you play the "don't" version 3 times in a row if not to brainwash the listener/reader? It worked on me but then when i heard A i had to question it and went ahead and listened a few times without looking at the subtitles. And I'm sure it's "look" he says. His dialect pronounces "look" more like "luke". So I vote "A". The scene is suggestive enough even without this conspiracy.
If you are THAT serious about wanting to understand, then I choose to proceed by the Socratic method... meaning I ask the questions and you try to give the best answer you can. If you can't give a good "best answer you can" then the process fails. The first question: how does repetition of one, more than the other, introduce a bias? Take the question seriously and give a thoughtful answer of more than just a few words. If I think you understand we will go to the next question.
@RuleOfRoseMysteries Actually Mercerdamon has a point. In the study of psychology, hearing something again and again will often induce one to agree with it. Just like the study in which one group listened to a comercial and nodded the whole time, another group shook their head for the same comercial. The ones who nodded liked the comercial, the other group didn't. It's sort of the same way Stockholm and Lima syndrome work.
But what is the situation of most players before they've seen this video? If they've played the game, they've seen the official subtitle (with the suggestibility that comes with official-ness---and the setting of the first impression). And if they've played the scene multiple times, they've had the official subtitle reinforced multiple times, no? So are we starting off on a level playing field anyway? This method, at least, makes the suggestibility effects more apparent.
@Echosofthemind I'm not saying Yea or Nay to either option A or B. And in those cases of the players previously playing the game, the text is said only once, briefly and then the subconscious moves on to the next subject. It's not hearing the same thing over and over in a short period of time. And I also would liek to note that, like te option of Yea or Nay, I am not trying to imply you were intentionally doing what Mercerdamon said. Just trying to clarify her pount from a psychological stand.
@RuleOfRoseMysteries you're looking into it to deep he is saying look cuz she is crying and probably looks like a mess so he is saying no one will want her if she looks like that.I like your vids tho :D
B. It's definitely a D sound. The L sound in a higher class english accent is stressed in a word. He would have said, "Leh-oohk." not "ook". It's not soft. It would be inconsistent with his accent and strange to say. He's saying don't.
Sorry, but I only hear what is on the subtitles. Hoffman is speaking in a rather posh British accent, so it can sound wierd, but it's definately "look", not "don't".
ohhhh yo lo jugué en ingles y no entendía algunas cosas; pero no se vale ¡deberían hacer una edición especial subtitulado en español! si ustedes que saben ingles a la perfección fallan; no me imagino yo, pobre de mí!!!
I think he's referring to sexual molestation either way. Diana could be crying because he is touching her, so either way, if he said, "Look LIKE that," or "DON'T like that", I think he's referring to a past molestation.
I think he says, "Look". I was watching his lips the whole time, not the subtitles. His lips made a "kuh" motion.
Kinda late to the party, but I'd have to vote A. And that made more sense to me while watching anyway, it seemed he was referring to her crying. Nobody would want to adopt her if she looked like that.
When I heard it blind (not looking at the video at all), I heard "look", not "don't". When I saw "don't", I heard "don't", but looking away, I noticed a pretty prominent L sound at the start of the work. Though I think it's quite obvious that he's pretty much groping her, I don't think the line itself is saying anything.
Thus, I vote A. It'd make sense either way, but definitely sounded like A to me. It also makes more sense in context.
i heard A. why would Jennifer remember him saying the other thing in her new memories if she saw that "innocent" scene with Clara and it disturbed her?
I can see where you might hear "don't", but personally as much as I believe there to be a definite amount of sexual abuse going on between hoffman and clara as well as Diana, I do think it is simply "look" here. I really can't hear the "don't" at all. You are definitely correct in knowing there is something going on between them, but I really think this scene is pretty straight forward in it's words at least.
I think it's B. I also think you should change the first 2 times so it doesn't say either A or B, so people don't know what to expect and can decide better. I closed my eyes for the first one for that reason. I just think it would help a bit more.
I think it's B. I also think you should change the first 2 times so it doesn't say either A or B, so people don't know what to expect and can decide better. I closed my eyes for the first one for that reason. I just think it would help a bit more.
When I read your subtitles I "thought" I heard it as a D, but when I went away and came back and listened without looking it was clearly heard as LOOK. Mr. Hoffmen may not yet be interested in Diana the way he is with Clara (I do believe they had some form of sexual relationship) and is simply attempting to both scare her into confessing or coax her into it by touching her the only way he knows, how he touches Clara to get her to go to be with him.
He says "Don't like that", so B. I noticed this during the scene before I saw this video, and it made me scratch my head and replay this scene several times. He clearly says "Don't".
Hmm... I actually think that A is more in context too... Saying 'if you don't like that' is really off-topic, he says 'look like that' because she's crying and he wants her to be quiet and answer him. Plus, I think it matches his character because to me that seems much more pervy. He's making her feel like no one will want her if she doesn't make herself look attractive, and stop crying when he strokes her. I think it makes more sense for the situation :/
If I read your subtitles as "don't" then I hear "don't" if I read the original subtitles I hear "look" but on the last time I closed my eyes and just listened, he doesn't say the letter "D" he says the letter "L". They're very close together in the way the words sound, I think the only way you can tell is by trying to judge the individual letters...
When I turn up the volume and press my ear close to the speaker I definitely heard "look". He says it in a slightly slurred way, but I definitely heard an "L" and "K"
ima say A and B. But i can hear him saying k in the end of that word, so its more of an A vote then it is a B vote. It does sound like dont though so thats why i vote both...
A. becasue of his accent and the slur he has in his voice, kind of like when you have a cold/stuffed nose and you can't pronounce things correctly. and in the context of what he's saying A makes more sense. (nothing to do with the way he is rubbing her)
i say A... and as SilverSiana said... is a matter of the accent... as look... sounds like that in the british accent... and cause i hear it.. and hear that word like that all the time hehe ... cheers!!
Sorry, but I here A - I guess it is something to do with the accent. It is quite common for some British dialects to say "look" like "luke" or "leuk" (can't really think how else it would be spelled!)
I vote B. It definetly sounds like dont, but it sounds like look too. They can both make perfect sense though. I am more for B, mostly because of "The Funeral" level with Clara. Mr. Hoffman is a creep.
i hear "No new Mummy or Daddy will want you if you don't like that" EVERY SINGLE TIME. You know, I KNEW there was something fishy with what he was saying, and now I get it. I choose option B, definitely option B.
The more I listen to it, the harder I find it to decide. I hear "look" but "don't" makes more sense to me. 'That' refferring to him touching her like that.
I /very/ distinctly hear the 'L' sound in "look", so I vote for scene A. It also just makes more sense. "No new mummy or daddy will want you looking LIKE that," as in, her crying.
I'm not sure but with the French subtitles, it's written "Aucun nouveau parent ne voudra de toi si tu fais cette tête-là" something like that, I don't remember. It means "No new parent will want you if you LOOK like that".
When I'm watching it, I hear what the subtitle says, not sure why. But when I look the other way so I'm only listening to it, I'm pretty sure I hear "DON'T".
I vote A. I hear "look." Both make sense but I think that "look" makes a little more sense than "don't." Hoffman is trying to stop her from crying so that she will answer his question of who killed the koi.
Saying "no new mummy or daddy will want you if you 'look' like that" is meant to stop her from crying so that she'll answer his question. If he really said "don't" then it's like changing the subject from the koi and her crying to the subject of him molesting her.
@RuleOfRoseMysteries This is why it's a good idea to close your eyes and just LISTEN, without letting any subtitles - or other outside influences - affect your decision.
It does sound like he's saying "don't" instead of "look", but it's hard to tell for sure, since his voice is a bit too garbled, and drowned out by Diana's crying.
@angelix It's 'look'... I have a theory about Hoffman and Diana... It's simple... Hoffman likes girls with a mature looking like Clara, Diana knows it and act like a child when Hoffman starts to insunuate to her... Diana is one of the oldest girls in the orphanage, so she LOOKs like a child to flee from Hoffmans abuse... Hoffmans was trying to make her more mature, but she was fleeing at all cost....
@darienmadhatter You're reaching a BIT too far there with that theory. She IS still a child, and thus, she cries when she gets in trouble. Simple as that.
Definitely B. It's much creepier too, so... I don't know know. Maybe I've only cinvinced myself it's B. But I had a hard time NOT hearing it that way. *Shrugs*
I think that this scene might be somewhat like the scene I've called the "sex scene" in The Funeral chapter: i.e. Jennifer saw Mr. Hoffman doing something inappropriate, but cleaned it up in her recollection of it. We aren't shown Mr. Hoffman actually touching Diana somewhere he shouldn't, but, in Jennifer's forgotten past, did he? To me, the statement, "No new mummy or daddy will want you if you don't like that" sounds like a line designed to get Diana to accept his sexual molestation.
To be honest, I kind of hear it as 'don't'. I'm not sure why, but the way the voice actor pronounces the word makes it sound more like a 'd' instead of an 'l', and I also seem to hear a 't' in there somewhere.
Or maybe it's just my horrid hearing, haha. But, I'm going to vote for B.
I think it's B "...If you don't like that" ..creepy O.o

I hear B! Thta's creepy...and so are the tags for the video XD
Hinsei13 1 year ago
He says "Don't like that", so B. I noticed this during the scene before I saw this video, and it made me scratch my head and replay this scene several times. He clearly says "Don't".
soullessarmy 1 year ago
ImNotWeird 1 year ago
If I read your subtitles as "don't" then I hear "don't" if I read the original subtitles I hear "look" but on the last time I closed my eyes and just listened, he doesn't say the letter "D" he says the letter "L". They're very close together in the way the words sound, I think the only way you can tell is by trying to judge the individual letters...
ImNotWeird 1 year ago 6
When I turn up the volume and press my ear close to the speaker I definitely heard "look". He says it in a slightly slurred way, but I definitely heard an "L" and "K"
garrenn 1 year ago
Hmm an old man pawing at a young girl. and if he says don't or look. Hard to say really since they both sound close.
Kersian1 1 year ago
B. it definitely sounded like don't, which just makes the scene all the more creepy
LovelyxMoments 1 year ago
ima say A and B. But i can hear him saying k in the end of that word, so its more of an A vote then it is a B vote. It does sound like dont though so thats why i vote both...
xxxchuchu16xxx 1 year ago
A.......but it could mean B, I mean B makes more sense, but A sounds right
rorhg0 1 year ago
I cant really tell because of the british accent, but im pretty sure its B

I've closed my eyes and listen.
Absolutelly inconclusive, but I vote B.

I hear B. but the subtitles make me think I hear A. It's confusing.

I clearly hear "don't" so I'm voting B.
BritaniaAngel 1 year ago
yes i vote B, like tsukurotta said, just the way he says it, plus hes a creep already, like xkellylynn523x said...
KrakenOfTheSouth 1 year ago
For me is B....my question is, it could be possible that they put "LOOK" and not "DON'T" for censured?
DemocraticaDori 1 year ago
A. becasue of his accent and the slur he has in his voice, kind of like when you have a cold/stuffed nose and you can't pronounce things correctly. and in the context of what he's saying A makes more sense. (nothing to do with the way he is rubbing her)
chelsiemalfoy 2 years ago
i say A... and as SilverSiana said... is a matter of the accent... as look... sounds like that in the british accent... and cause i hear it.. and hear that word like that all the time hehe ... cheers!!
IKurtC 2 years ago
B
i think shes crying beacuse hes rubing her so b makes sense
jarrahpridham1 2 years ago
Sorry, but I here A - I guess it is something to do with the accent. It is quite common for some British dialects to say "look" like "luke" or "leuk" (can't really think how else it would be spelled!)
SilverSiana 2 years ago
B. Not only does it sound like it, but the way he says it makes it seem like that.
tsukurotta 2 years ago
A I think
mamangakka 2 years ago
I vote B. It definetly sounds like dont, but it sounds like look too. They can both make perfect sense though. I am more for B, mostly because of "The Funeral" level with Clara. Mr. Hoffman is a creep.
xkellylynn523x 2 years ago
I'm using earphones to hear this one. It sounds more like A. But I'm trying to figure out how it sounds like "don't". =/
I vote A for now...
KazeYoukai15 2 years ago
i hear "No new Mummy or Daddy will want you if you don't like that" EVERY SINGLE TIME. You know, I KNEW there was something fishy with what he was saying, and now I get it. I choose option B, definitely option B.

I clearly hear option B.

I vote for B. It sounds a lot like it when I close my eyes.

The more I listen to it, the harder I find it to decide. I hear "look" but "don't" makes more sense to me. 'That' refferring to him touching her like that.
chatycheetah22 2 years ago
After reading a comment about this video on your blog, I opened this video in another window and listened to it without looking at the video.
It may be a bit difficult when his voice lowers, but I hear the 'ohnt' sound every time. I don't hear it resembling 'look' at all.
DIGISOKICOLA 2 years ago
I /very/ distinctly hear the 'L' sound in "look", so I vote for scene A. It also just makes more sense. "No new mummy or daddy will want you looking LIKE that," as in, her crying.
ClownPriincess 2 years ago
I'm not sure but with the French subtitles, it's written "Aucun nouveau parent ne voudra de toi si tu fais cette tête-là" something like that, I don't remember. It means "No new parent will want you if you LOOK like that".
SadQueenBoogie 2 years ago
When I'm watching it, I hear what the subtitle says, not sure why. But when I look the other way so I'm only listening to it, I'm pretty sure I hear "DON'T".
NoobAlchemist 2 years ago
it sounds like he's saying, "..No new mummy or daddy will ever want you if you WON'T like that."

Interesting how the voting seems to run in blocks of first one then the other. I wonder if that means anything?

probably influence of the previous comments... lol

I had some more thoughts but I'll just post them on the blog where there isn't a character limit.
leifericjgmail 2 years ago
I hear B, but a friend of mine hears A.
Both would work in the context of the story though.
RaguraX 2 years ago
I vote for A. I definitely hear "look" eventhough I try to think "don't". Same observation as Aprilmoon
lilkani48 2 years ago
I hear both, but I find it leans more towards A instead of B. When I just listen to it without watching I hear look
RoyalScarlet01 2 years ago
Deffinatly B!
Fuckingflesheater 2 years ago
i think it's A cuz if you listen closely, hoffman made a "-k" sound before he said "like that."
plus i have my volume up so idk

If you think "don't" you heard "don't" if you think "look" you hear "look".
That's so unfair.
echendatem 2 years ago 12
That effect, the effect of expectation influencing perception, makes this a difficult problem.
It's one of the reasons why I think it is important to reach out for many opinions on this issue.
RuleOfRoseMysteries 2 years ago
@RuleOfRoseMysteries This is why it's a good idea to close your eyes and just LISTEN, without letting any subtitles - or other outside influences - affect your decision.
It does sound like he's saying "don't" instead of "look", but it's hard to tell for sure, since his voice is a bit too garbled, and drowned out by Diana's crying.
angelix 1 year ago
@angelix It's 'look'... I have a theory about Hoffman and Diana... It's simple... Hoffman likes girls with a mature looking like Clara, Diana knows it and act like a child when Hoffman starts to insunuate to her... Diana is one of the oldest girls in the orphanage, so she LOOKs like a child to flee from Hoffmans abuse... Hoffmans was trying to make her more mature, but she was fleeing at all cost....
(sorry for my bad english)
darienmadhatter 1 year ago
@darienmadhatter You're reaching a BIT too far there with that theory. She IS still a child, and thus, she cries when she gets in trouble. Simple as that.
angelix 1 year ago
@echendatem yeah it is >> that and the two KINDA sounds alike with this voice actor......or atlest cuz of his accent

Definitely B. It's much creepier too, so... I don't know know. Maybe I've only cinvinced myself it's B. But I had a hard time NOT hearing it that way. *Shrugs*
fireflyslocket 2 years ago
yea its B what is hoffman refering to of 'not liking something' ?
42Unknowns 2 years ago
I think that this scene might be somewhat like the scene I've called the "sex scene" in The Funeral chapter: i.e. Jennifer saw Mr. Hoffman doing something inappropriate, but cleaned it up in her recollection of it. We aren't shown Mr. Hoffman actually touching Diana somewhere he shouldn't, but, in Jennifer's forgotten past, did he? To me, the statement, "No new mummy or daddy will want you if you don't like that" sounds like a line designed to get Diana to accept his sexual molestation.

@RuleOfRoseMysteries yeh. i totally agree with you

I vote for B, even if my (italian) subtitles says "if u look like that"
PrincessOfRedRose 2 years ago
I hear B
AgainstAllVacuity 2 years ago
To be honest, I kind of hear it as 'don't'. I'm not sure why, but the way the voice actor pronounces the word makes it sound more like a 'd' instead of an 'l', and I also seem to hear a 't' in there somewhere.
Or maybe it's just my horrid hearing, haha. But, I'm going to vote for B.
Sajotae 2 years ago
I'm hearing don't too.
Bollocks, everything needs to stop fucking with my mind.
