  • The rabbit died laughing! LOL :DDDDD!!!!

  • thanks to everyone explaining the rabbit part :)

  • 1 - Maude is not a movie. It was a 1970s sitcom that also starred Bea and Rue

2- The rabbit joke comes from an old practice for testing for pregnancy. Look it up, because it isn't nice or pretty.

  • This is so sad...I'm a golden girl fanatic...yet I don't remember this scene at all!

  • i don't get this rabbit joke?

  • @fontenayperi Back before we had the medical science needed to isolate pregnancy (or any) hormones specifically, they did what was called the "rabbit test". They took the urine of the woman in question and exposed it to the reproductive tract of the female rabbit. The excess/deficiency of estrogen etc would develop the rabbit ovaries so that you could tell if the woman was pregnant. This sitcom was from the 80s so there were still quite a percentage of the population who used this.

  • @GFMarshallx1 sounds complicated. like by the time you figured out if the ovaries were developed or not, ma would be "out to ---> here".

  • I just discovered the golden girls in the past month. I am so obsessed.

  • @LuvBrit2637 if you like this you should watch Bea Arthur's other show Maude. you'll love it!!!

  • sophia is a mess lol

  • LOL!!! totally sounds like Maude! I love that show! It's weird to See Rue so ditsy tho!!

  • I don't get the rabbit part???

  • @ptboy18 There was an old fashioned pregnancy test in which the urine or blood of a women who thought she might be pregnant was injected into a rabbit and if it died she was believed to be pregnant. When Dorothy says the rabbit died laughing she is saying it was laughing because Sophia was so old.

  • @ninetiesbaby10 That's actually a common misconseption, that Rabbit's die from being injected. Although they do die, it's actually NOT from being injected with urine, they died because they had to be cut open so that doctors could look inside of their ovaries, pretty sick stuff.

  • @blugeagua Oh I recognize that the fact that the method is faulty and obsolete...I was just informing someone else of what the joke referred to...but yeah it makes sense that they would all pretty much die

  • @ninetiesbaby10 Actually the rabbit didn't die because of the hormone released in the urine of a woman who was pregnant; it was the scientists cutting the rabbit open to look at her ovaries and see if there were changes indicative of pregnancy that killed the poor thing.

  • @ptboy18 because sophia says its for a medical emergency so dorothy tells her ' wat the rabbit DIED laughing!' because she know sophia cant be pregnant

  • @ptboy18 Rabbits used to be used for pregnancy tests. They would inject the rabbit with fluid from the woman and if there was any change in the rabbit's ovaries, it meant they were pregnant. In order to do that though, the rabbit had to be killed.

  • @ptboy18 In the old days they used rabbits to test who may have been preganat.

  • @Honey360Bee Well that makes perfect logical sense. I am such a Rose.

  • @Honey360Bee how?/

  • @ptboy18 i can't remember exactly how they did it, but in the old world, they would somehow preform a pregnancy test with blood and a rabbit. If the rabbit died, the girl was pregnant.

  • @ptboy18 a rabbit is a symbol of fertility. so back in the day a rabbit would be used to test if a woman is pregnant or not.

  • "what happened? The rabbit died laughing!?"

sound's alot like MAUDE... (season: 1, disc: 2, Episode: "Maude's Dilemma - Part 1") when Maude (Bea Arthur) tell's her best friend, Vivian (Rue McClanahan) that she's pregnant...

Maude: "There's no mistake, Vivian, the rabbit died... Laughing, no doubt!!"

    LMAO!! too funny!! :)

  • It helps that Susan Harris wrote that episode of Maude.

  • to: PeterBluth

AMEN to that!!! that was too funny... LMAO ... too damned funny... :)

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 Loved that episode

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 Haha! I was just thinking that. I love that episode. "Vivian, when I'm 62, I'm going to be the mother of an Eagle scout!"

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 i have maude and golden girls on dvd there amazing.

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 That was a great episode. Brought real meaning

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 who are maude and vivian?

  • @hailzmarie1 maude and vivian are the roles of bea arthur and rue mc clannahan in the 70's sitcom maude

  • @hailzmarie1 It's referring to Bea Arthur's show "Maude" from the 70s.

  • @LorettaSwitFan1 Are a lot of jokes associated with that movie?

  • *What happened, the rabbit die laughing* LOL
