Whether you like the original rendition by the Zutons, you have to realize that they are the origins of this song. I'm a die hard (no pun intended) Amy Winehouse fan, and I obviously like hers more. But, if I look at them as two different songs, this version is still AMAZING.

This have more sense than Amy Whinehouse singing the song. He's a boy and talks about a girl, this is more normal. When Amy sang it i was like "Amm.. who Valerie is in your life? And why do you miss her? *suspicious*". But personally i like more the Amy's version but this one is good too. It's just i like more the faster one! Oh! And Santana's (Naya Rivera) version is absolutely PERFECT!! :D

i always found it weird that Amy was singing about a woman. now that i know that it was originally sung by a man it makes me feel a little bit better. Amy made this song a more jazzy version but the zutons make it like a cool ballad in and of themselves. both versions are timeless

God, some people really are stupid. I remember Amy saying how much she loved this song and performed her version at Party in the park, then it was released as a single. When the Zutons original came out it was a big hit and already a known song. For me a cover version is about putting your own twist on the original and that's what amy and mark did. It's a complement to the Zutons for writing such an amazing song for someone else who's talented to think to cover!

@MysteryThalia Actually it was famous, and was number 1 for a VERY long time, long before amy winehouse sang it. And the zutons themselves dont care. the lead singer, the guy who writers the songs said in an interview that he doesnt care, cause everytime someone plays that song, he gets money for it. I know its annoying, especially when people say valerie by amyu winehouse (i always shout when i hear that. xD) but if they dont care, we shouldnt either. :)

Just to make things clear here...the other version is not Amy Winehouse's version. Sure, she sings in it, but the person responsible for everything else in it is Mark Ronson. I personally prefer this version, the original, although I have to admit that Ronson's version is a great cover, however that is not because of Amy Winehouse, but because of Mark Ronson so give credit where it is due. Ronson covered it, not Winehouse.

I agree that The Zutons deserve a lot of credit for writing the song. But, in my opinion, Amy's version is better. This version is more of a simple pop song, as someone said before, but Amy brought more soul to it. In Amy's version, she's makes you envision a story behind she and "Valerie's" relationship and what this person is like. In The Zuton's version, although it has the same lyrics, it doesn't have the same effect. Also, Amy's version has better vocals, which is always a plus.
