  • my dreamcar... i wishd id had some day 520 1988 black. 520 1989 white. 520 1990 red. 520 1991 blue. 520 1992 red. 520 1993 green. 520 1994 white

  • one of my dreamcars

  • Best and only Japanese car I would by is the latest GTR and thats only because its fast and I'd have some fun but when it comes down to it I know i'd buy a German.

At moment I have BMW and I love it better then any car i've driven or go in regularly :)

  • Having worked to Lexus and BMW alike I can come to this conclusion. Japanese cars are great, reliable, well built and retain excellent risidual value. They do, however, lack soul and an identity (design wise) that europeans seem to have mastered long ago. Driving a Lexus is great but the cars lack feel and excitement. You drive a BMW and you feel involved in the driving experience. In my professional opinion German cars are the best in the world.

  • There are one kinds of car and that is only the German cars. The japanese love ot copy , the american car ... well only american's like them :D

  • @gogobmwe30 Agreed. But as an American and defending the cars, we have massive space and long big highway systems. We don't need tight handling cars like other nations do, particularly in Europe. Parking is not and issue and bends and curves in the road aren't either.

  • @OsbornTramain Highways aren't the only roads Americans have... Germany also has some long and wide highways, but their cars are built for all situations...

  • @dunti21 True, Germany has Autobahns, I've been on them but as a percentage of all /roads in Germany, I would believe we have long highways and further distances to travel then our German counterparts. This it's about the difference in style of their luxury cars. I'm merely trying to explain the cultural difference between American Luxury ride and German Luxury ride. Detriot wouldnt make them if people didn't want them. If that's not a reason, then why does the difference Exist? thoughts?

  • @OsbornTramain America's concept seems to be "quantity better than quality".. This works for the food industry too. Here, quantity translates to size. America's idea of a luxury car is a big car, even if it is plasticy inside. Also, Americans are very patriotic, and prefer to by their own produce and regard it as the best.

  • @dunti21 Yeah, I'm not sure that anything you say is correct. The demensions of a Lincoln or Caddy has been for 20 years the same as a BMW or MB.. I think Americans can appreciate that a MB or BMW is a fine luxury car. I don't think of Cadillac's or Lincoln's as plasticy in their interiors, maybe Chevys Buicks & Dodges but not Caddy? I worked for Chrysler and have worked for Mercedes, BMW and Chevy so I've been around and driven all these cars. Year after Year, foriegn market share goes up.

  • over 20 years later, and the japanese still can't get it right. infinities, lexuses, and acuras are just rebadged models of their less premium brands. they have no feel or premium quality at all, just more features.

  • Lets be honest here, 95% of Japanese cars are just cheap versions of popular European models. Shame they never seem to be the pioneers in Auto design - that's why I don't buy Jap and stick to European stuff.

  • Only an aHHSooo would consider this insulting to Japanese culture. Now calling them Jap cars and sayin "something is always wost in the twanwation" intead would have been a different story.

  • I sell cars for a living...and i have to say...there is no comparsion to BMW.

  • so in the description ... you're trying to say that bmws are built on philosophies similar to that of cadillac or lincoln ? lol FAIL

  • Lexus had no history.......still doesnt.....and what names....IS 250?

    no thanks!

  • The Japenese car shapes were boxxy on purpose, although they kind of led the way in terms of Aerodynamic designs circa 1988.

  • The LS came out in 1989 as a 1990 model, if this is a commercial for a 1988 model year 7 series it can't be referring to the LS.

  • That is what I love about german cars, they age very well. I remember the first time I saw an E34...my dad had an E28 and I loved it, but the first time I saw one of these I thought it was a goddamn spaceship!! Great thing is it still looks good after all these years. Try that with the present Honda Civic, which may look high tech, but watch it in 10 years, and see how hideous and absurd it will look...

  • @TheSRalston a current honda civic will look and represent the 2000's in about 15 years time. It will look outdated, but distinct as everyone is our current time is obsessed with technology

  • not an 88 5 series but still i <3 my e34

  • Its funny how you think that the japenese werent trying to copy bmw. Toyota decided to build a copy brand. more luxurious brand, of their same cars just large and more like a german car which are known for luxury and performance. When toyota wanted to make a cheap version of the BMW you bet that they are going to make a joke about it. And in your description it says that bmw copied cadillac and lincoln. Please explan to me again which country built the first engine leading to the car??

  • @Adubleyou Based on the introduction price, they were targeting the Lincoln and Cadillac owners rather than the Mercedes and BMW owners. Do you really think a Mercedes owner or BMW owner would trade their beauties in for one of the new Japanese models? NO! The volume market for luxury cars were Caddy and Lincoln, they sold in higher volume and this was the market Acura/Luxus was trying to tap.

  • @OsbornTramain ha whats funny is that your thinking its by price it really isnt. Any Marketing is going to attack the top dog not the under dog(not saying caddy and lincoln are). If your going to advertise you want to take the customer that is going to spend the most money on a car or any other product. Its human nature and common sense, but lets just say toyota is trying to now....

  • @Adubleyou Thanks for commenting here, I do really appreciate it. But honestly, you don't know anything about Marketing. It's by price. This is a concept known as Market Segmenting. You always try to get the most of the market but there are distinctive segments with in a market. In this case. Acura and Lexus were attaching the Caddy/Lincoln segment.

  • @OsbornTramain Thank you for responding to my comments I also appreciate your view of this subject.... This commercial is a response to toyota founding lexus... Lexus is trying really hard to get into supercar/high luxurious brand h t t p : / / w w w. y o u t u b e . com / w a t c h ? v= _V 4 K F Y g k 57 M this video shows lexus trying to beat top dog german auto makers

  • @Adubleyou Hey, I tried, but couldn't get the link to work..send it to me in via comment or email okay. I'll check it out (on my channel)

  • @OsbornTramain just search: Introducing the 2011 Lexus IS Commercial: "Gap"

  • @OsbornTramain just search: Introducing the 2011 Lexus IS Commercial: "Gap"

  • Good ol' days.

  • The E34 in this commercial looks stunning!! I've always been a big fan of the older Beemers like the: E23, E28, E34 and also the big body e32. =)

  • even if it was an attack on Japanese or whatever, WHO CARES its true completely, freedom of speech, and everyone understood the message. sounds like some good marketing. If it was a lexus commercial playing a German song nobody would care.

  • @jlubez considering that the sales of BMW plummeted in the USA at the time, I'm thinking it wasn't good marketing.

  • @OsbornTramain good point

  • the immiations dont hold the sheet up because the simply dont have a brand that stands up next to BMW

  • lexus still reverse egineering the bmw range

  • e28 best 5 series

  • Piękna miałem taką sama . . .

  • This was prob a direct jab at Lexus, because this was around the time the Lexus brand started to appear.

  • Dayummmm... my 1988 bmw 7 series has 234,xxx miles and still runs like new.. alll leather seats are completly original, no rips, no tears, clean car btw...

  • الله يرحم ايام زمان

  • Haha! This is a great commercial. And if they want to point to the Japanese, let them point as they have every right to. Copycats try and copy everything Germans do and then sell it for half the price (cheaper lousier material)...you always feel the difference when you're driving a BMW or one of those boy racer Toyota/Honda crap. This commercial is perfect.

  • who cares if they are insulting the japanese culture ...HEY MAN THATs BMW THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT CUZ THEY BUILD THE BEST CARS IN THE F WORLD

  • while japanese luxury brands are undoubtedly doing well, they just can't make cars that measure up to the big two. in performance, the germans always win.

  • American cars rule. european cars waste of money, piece of junk, toolbox....

  • @achiko88 Err yeah, thats why GM has to always get bailed out and can only win in the US and US alone. The Germans are monopolising the rest of the world...because their cars actually have some serious technology and friendly to the planet!! American cars just drink up fuel and look like shit. Period.

  • @jwmm4eva most technology u see today were invented by americans. lookup MPGs german cars drink more fuel than any other...

  • @achiko88 the camaros, mustangs, GM vehicles in general will beat german cars anytime in heavy fuel consumption. anyway, its funny if the americans invented the technology, why their market is so small and their cars cant hold a candle to german cars?

  • @jwmm4eva compare MPGs and ull see how german V6 eats more gas than american V8.... who told you american market is small? US market is #1 priority for all automakers and best selling cars are always american or japanese... europe cant even make it in top 20 :)

  • @achiko88 US market will definitely be #1 priority for everyone, because its a good place to sell cars!! (local cars aren't up to scratch which is my point) Where are the stats for US being best selling cars mate? Global sales for most units sold in 2009, BMW was #1 of all cars, #2 was Toyota. That's the stat which matters, so what are you talkin about?

  • @jwmm4eva I don't think the Germans have a very big market share in the USA? You need to look at sales figures. US, Japan and Korean cars have the largest share of the US Market. I'm sure Germans are down around 3 percent.

  • @jwmm4eva I think you need to look at real production figures....China, Japan and the USA are the largest car producers, not Germany.

  • So what if they go after the japaneese market, the japanese market was going after them by bringing up rival brands to compete with the likes of BMW and Benz. All's fair in love and war.

  • Damn chinkies

  • This still looks great after 20 something years. It may be true that yes, this is BMW saying "Stay of my turf!" but the Lexus LS was aimed at a higher class (the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class). The only car that could compete with the 5 Series was the Lexus ES. That was only a pretty version of the Toyota Camry.

  • wow cars changed alot in the last 22 years

  • Shame the POS BMW can't compare the Mercedes E-Class

  • Have this exact model and colour, the Golden shower metallic :-)... and for a ride, i prefer it to my girl's A3 anytime. Just has more character than modern cars!

  • wow this looks so beautiful. I wish I could buy a brand-new un-used E34. I hate how modern cars are so curvy. I like the edgy boxy look.

  • in my opinion japanese car are very good, but germans cars are much better 100%, if it were not so, why? Toyota has asked mercedes benz, to manufacture diesel engines for land cruiser in the 50's about

  • @rangerovertruck yeah Mercedes makes the best diesel engines! its the best manufacture in the world!

  • This isn't insulting to Japanese culture. The point is, the Japanese brands were gunning straight for the Germans, trying to be the perfect imitation at a value price. Thats was no secret. In the process of doing so however, the certain unique elements of driving a BMW were not carried over, keeping the two experiences exclusive from one another. Thats all the commercials trying to pitch. The German premium marks don't copy the American ones, don't draw that conclusion through self-analysis.

  • @sleeevy My opinion is that it's insulting to the Japanese culture on two specifics areas. First and for most, Japan as a country has always been accused of reverse engineering. The statement that "something is always lost in the translation" seems to infer that Japanese always get it wrong. Secondly, the parody of Japanese style music. The music seems off key and slightly demeaning.

  • E34 FTW !

  • :( i want one

  • This is cool!

There are so many of these in the Atlanta area.

Most of them look show room new.

When you are aside them at a red light, and they take off, the engine sounds like the day it was made.

I would love to find one for myself in good shape!

    Brent

  • :)

    Nice!

  • Comment removed

  • E28 > E34

  • I don't think this video is offensive at all. Lighten up people.

  • i have that car... a white one. is it good?

  • love this bmw i love it alot more then the new one

  • i wonder if BMW still keep new e34 models in their HQ somewhere .... imagine somehow getting ur hands on one of those cars .. like a brand new e34 1988 ... i wonder how it would feel to drive since i have a 1988 e34 with the no-so-impressive m20b20 engine ... but a car is so much more than an engine ...

  • @phant0m385 They only have like 1 or 2 demo cars. My dad works in AXA - they have a 1969 Volkswagen Transporter with only 210 miles on the clock. Looks spotless.

  • yeah i can imagine ... saw pictures of the E34 M5 two door ( coupe ) the other day .. BMW decided not to release it ... but its there in their HQ in Munchen ... loooks sweeeet !!!

  • e39 is the best 5series hands down

  • agreed

  • lol nc

  • Ok, I love BMW with a freakin passion, for several reasons, they are fun, they look very beautiful, they are comfortable, and fun to drive. Japanese competitors are boring, but they are comfortable I admit that, but Lexus are just overpriced Camrys with a Lexus logo. Infiniti's are my favorite japanese brand, cause they come pretty close to BMWs excellence. Acuras are overpriced Hondas, and they just don't offer as much as the European rivals. Most people who buy japanese jst care of reliability

  • TheJumper01, I agree with you for the most part. If you don't enjoy cars and if you need a very comfortable, smooth, and tech packed but unexciting vehicle then a Lexus is perfect. I like Infiniti because they take their Jap. heritage in stride and make well performing vehicles (Nissan in general). Acura is a bit hit/miss but I would consider them a semi-premium brand that from an image standpoint is still too close to Honda (which I still greatly prefer over toyota). Like BMW/Benz, love Audi!

  • i could Imagine Own some day 5 CARS

    BMW 520 E34

    ALFA ROMEO 164

    MERCEDES-BENZ 300E

    FORD SIERRA

    HONDA CIVIC

  • those aren't expensive cars

  • are us-bmw´s still power-limited?

  • of course..

  • proud owner of e34 but i like jap cars too

  • jap scum

  • i hate how the entire lexus range are all bmw rip offs

  • ok first of all, its spelled Acura, not Accura. and considering the price of an Acura Legend to this car, i can see how BMW would be upset. the Legend offered most, if not all that the BMW did, plus they had a drivers airbag standard in '88 along with anti lock brakes, pretty much anything available in a BMW of the time, was available in the Legend. and being an early Legend owner myself, i must say they are an absolute pleasure to drive. especially the 5-spd model like mine ; )

  • except it was wrong wheel drive lol

    fwd ftmfl!

a front wheel drive car can never be considered a sports sedan.

  • hater

  • Beatiful car...timeless shape

  • haha dumb japs. i like how they insulted them.

  • not only do they have the cars, they also make the best commercials...beat that!!

  • BMW E34! One of the best cars ever! I have owned four of them, 88 sedan, 92, 93 and 95 Tourings. Now i drive an 2003 E39 Touring.

  • for me this is one of the most beautiful cars ever and ever. The old BMW 7er is best

  • There is no way they were talking about the Japanese in this commercial. Infiniti and Lexus did not even INTRODUCE their first cars into the market until halfway through 1989, and the Acura Legend was considered on the same level as MAYBE the 3 series. This was ad was calling out Audi, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc.

  • Thanks for the comment, but you are incorrect. This add is directly targeted at Acura and Lexus buyer. This ad aired in late Summer of 1988. The Acura was introduced in the USA and Canada in March of 1986. Lexus on January 1st 1989 and soon became the best selling Luxury car in the USA. The press and car market was abuzz since 86 about the Luxus. It was reasonable for BMW to try to target this car with it's impending introduction only a few months of away of this Fall of 88 ad.

  • OK, using that logic, I now see what you are talking about. I thought you meant that Lexus had already introduced their cars by then and were selling cars like crazy as well (but I guess orders could have been placed in advance too). I remember reading magazine articles from that era hyping up the introduction of the Lexus too. So disregard my comment in that case!

  • @OsbornTramain I have to say I agree with you 100%. I can still remember the launch of Lexus into the market. It certainly caused a major stir and it would have had BMW reacting like this.

I would not say the music is demeaning, but I think the tone of the ad has a slight sneer to it.

German snobbery at it's best really!

  • The e34 is the best 5 series. I have in such a way one, and him will never sell. Because it drives and drives and drives and drives each year.

    ;-)

  • Just bought a E34 525i w/Vanos. Great car. Still love my 533i. Totally different.

  • I own a 1989 535i BMW - Alpine white with black pinstripes & interior ... it runs like new & looks new.

A man at the car wash this past summer, thought I still had it under warranty!

Just proves BMW builds lasting cars that can withstand modern times - it still is breathtakingly beautiful after twenty years!

  • hey i just bought myself a 93 525i and i know NOTHING of it.. how do i know if mine is like a e34??? but mine looks exactly like this one.. wer can i find info for mine?? help!!

  • If its a 93 its an e34, e34 was the bodystyle of the five from 89 to 96.

  • thanx man. hey do u know of any good forums of bmw i can go to?? do u belong to a bmw forum comunity at all??

  • I dont really know any specific e34 forums I would just google it, E30s are more of my thing.

  • Plus, if it was a `93 you'd know by the mirrors. `93-`95 used more horizontally stretched ones.

  • German Car

  • the great e34! I used to have one, my first BMW:)

  • e34 best 5 series

  • @alpineb10 I would say its the E39 which was the pinnacle... before it all went wrong

  • @bigfoot1310 Agreed, but they still do have their moments sometimes.

  • i love BMW and this E34 it's one of my favourite 5 series but i hate Bangle design of E60 5series,i prefer buy a Lexus GS450h

  • Thats My Favorite BMW

  • .."sthg always seems to get lost in the translation" Well Japan can do Lean Production and Design-to-Cost, but this is European PREMIUM-Power.. craftmanship and fine arts, not "Copy-Paste"

  • i drive one for my first car black with grey leather.

  • They are still good looking even after 20 years

  • Very modern too, could pass for late 90s.

  • i hope i owm some day e34 bmws < 1988 and 1990

  • I bet they were refering to the japs there always trying to copy everything and they always get it wrong and there cars are seriously ugly.

  • Clearly, they were referring to Infiniti and Lexus. Japs, is sort of a derogatory term don't you think?

  • Infiniti looks pretty bad but i hate lexus they do exact copys of mercs and there o.k but there not the best car to start off with + i agree with you on that one and thanks for sending the message.

  • @OsbornTramain your political correctness sucks

  • Thank you so much for posting! I am happy that I still own one of these masterpieces! THE BEST CAR EVER!!!

  • yes, this is the best BMW 5Series ever produce...

  • You are absolutely right! This car is the fastest and most safety living-room I have ever seen! :-) You could visit my homepage! We present two E34 and one E30 on this site! Use our guestbook, too! (Gästebuch)!Regards, Zenettikid

  • i love e34 its best car ever

  • yes, i hope one day buy one of this...i love E34...

  • Note the gong sound...
