Typical monday morning quarterbacks critiquing what they do not know. It's not meant to simulate the actual conditions but to develop muscle memory so that the pilot can do it without thought and instantly. (Practice makes perfect.) The seats look similar to those of a T-37 which is 1950-60 era aircraft hence the older seat.

And no he hasn't been there a year, note the ejection handgrips have a trigger, which means this is a T-37 trainer and not a T-38 trainer. He doesn't have a class patch yet so he's part of the 'Baby Class'. He hasn't flown the jet yet.

@angelcruz373 the simulator here represents the upper rear crew compartment of a B-52H, what is being simulated is an ejection seat failure and forced manual bailout, an eventuality trained for in the B-52 due to its older model seats that have proven in service to have a less than perfect reliability record, once he has unstrapped, the crew member then makes his egress through an escape hatch in the lower deck.
