Personally I'd call 4e simplified rather than dumbed down. I don't like everything about it, but generally I view it as a good thing. Simpler game mechanics mean you can spend more time focusing on your character's personality. And it's great for introducing D&D to new players who've never played a tabletop RPG before.
To clarify. I mean your character choices. You can be a powergamer and get all of the best equipment, or you can roleplay and imagine what would best suit your character. But in 4E everything is so "balanced" and WoWee that such choices often have an "in name only" feel. Especially since many (fair) penalties are thrown out the window. So go ahead and play whatever type of character you want, but there will be little (or at least significantly less) in the game mechanics to reflect your choices.
He should have done and recorded all of the necessary rolls at once, then asked questions (like "What is Int") while choosing where to place them. Takes about 30 minutes first time. Looks like he was trying to stall for comedic effect.
And the problem with 4ED me and many others have isn't that it simplifies things. It's that it's SO simple if becomes shallow. One character is interchangeable with another all in the name of "balance". This isn't a video game. Your choices should have an impact.

it is fairly simple if you look beyond the rules. for example, grappling is a 4 step move,
1) attack of opportunity
2) touch attach
3)opposed grapple checks
4) maintain the grapple
simpliflied, you tried to get close, so he swung at you, you see if you can get a grip, then you see if he can break that grip, and then you cling. it looks complicated on paper, the "logistics" (poor choice of words as this doesnt fit) are the simple things.
srsly... just get the red box first edition, There is a character template sheet in the original game manual.. woulda saved that tool at least an hour.

that was freakin awesome! I use to play "alot"...DMed for over 20 years...it takes a certain kinda person to play and appreciate the game. It's all in the story telling and the ability to draw the players into an emotional crisis. Gods but it was fun in the day! Peace brother and sisters.
It does take a while to make a character if you're obsessed with getting every little detail and stat down before you do anything.
That's why I like the roll as you go method - start with important role-playing details first and then figure out the stats as you go as needed. This can get interesting when you start out playing the role of a strong character and then later find out your STR is 5!
Emery isn't a gamer. The NG guy shouldn't have been on him about cheating. He probably shouldn't have been on about height and other details. A pre-made character would be even better. Just play the game!

Thing is, it actually does take about that long to make a character even if you've played the game or not. However he is a newbie at it which is why it took extra longer than usual. It may take a long time but it's really not that hard to do. In fact it's quite easy.
Goes to show: don't burden new players with the whole character making thing, just whip up a pile of premades beforehand, let him/her choose one, and just start playing and having fun.
Oh, I agree completely when it comes to people who are even a little bit into the game- ultimately, roleplaying is about playing roles after all :)
The premade-characters is an option I always like to keep at hand though for when new players join the game. I do have several of them in stock however, so that such a player can easily pick one that (s)he likes- takes away some of the confusing mechanics and brings them fully into the game right from the start :)

Honestly though.. character creation can be a pain in the ass, there are just a ton of resources and things that you can choose from. If you don't try to do everything at once... min/max whatever.. you'll get your character out in less than an hour.

Who in the world owns a basement anymore? When i play D&D i play out on a table near my apartment. The reason why people play D&D is to escape from the boring as can be life that people like missIndian create. Yes the first time you play char. creation can take a bit of time, but if you have the a reading lvl above the 5th grade level it should not take 2hours. After getting use to it though you can make a char. sheet in under 30 min. what is long is the development of your char's persona.

The video game series for D&D is NOT as creative as there are minor things you can change, while in the roll game, you can change everything the way you want it to be (with skill, race, class, age, height, weight, origin, clan name(or last name), etc.). The video games are not as good as the good old rolling version.
you never played it; try it out. if you dont like it, it is most likely because you have a low amount of imagination or because you had a bad DM. try it.

Thing is, it actually does take about that long to make a character even if you've played the game or not. However he is a newbie at it which is why it took extra longer than usual. It may take a long time but it's really not that hard to do. In fact it's quite easy.

Oh, I agree completely when it comes to people who are even a little bit into the game- ultimately, roleplaying is about playing roles after all :)
The premade-characters is an option I always like to keep at hand though for when new players join the game. I do have several of them in stock however, so that such a player can easily pick one that (s)he likes- takes away some of the confusing mechanics and brings them fully into the game right from the start :)

Computer RP sucks, Neverwinter Nights 1 was some way towards what real RP is like.
Tabletop or Live Action is so much more involved. Hopefully one day Computer RP will become good.

Honestly though.. character creation can be a pain in the ass, there are just a ton of resources and things that you can choose from. If you don't try to do everything at once... min/max whatever.. you'll get your character out in less than an hour.

Who in the world owns a basement anymore? When i play D&D i play out on a table near my apartment. The reason why people play D&D is to escape from the boring as can be life that people like missIndian create. Yes the first time you play char. creation can take a bit of time, but if you have the a reading lvl above the 5th grade level it should not take 2hours. After getting use to it though you can make a char. sheet in under 30 min. what is long is the development of your char's persona.

The video game series for D&D is NOT as creative as there are minor things you can change, while in the roll game, you can change everything the way you want it to be (with skill, race, class, age, height, weight, origin, clan name(or last name), etc.). The video games are not as good as the good old rolling version.
