  • We have been robbed-of a supremely talented man.

  • Love you Luke you are amazing !!

    Muriel xxx

  • Luke sure could sing. There's more emotion in one line of this song sung by Kelly then there is in all of every modern style songs put together. This is very moving, me not even being an Irishman, (nor has any in my family (that I know of)). This is inspiring to me, and should be to any one who hears it.

  • this has been said probably thousands of times on youtube, but really no words can describe the emotion that comes from this; it really is the best thing on youtube.your whole channel is great and thanks for this. if i was drunk i'd probably cry :)

  • This is probably my favourite song by Luke.

Great channel "kellyoneill" subscribing to it was definately one of my better ideas!!

  • great backing vocals by ciaran

  • @612franklin it looks like it, you must be from Liverpool !

  • Love Luke Kelly. My grandad went to work in Liverpool in the 40s for a few years before going to America in 47. Unlike the fellow in this song, he wasn't the least bit sad to see it go!

  • Liverpool is the capital of Irland for sure !

  • @63frankie 612franklin here. are we somehow related?

  • I have listened to this song a thousand times and it never fails to thrill me.....thank you Luke and the Dubs...

  • @schiple I will always have a place for this group in my heart.

  • @joeygsmom absolutely joeygsmom me too, always, always...

  • Acould burry twenty pints listenin te this !!!

  • Timeless. Love to see Luke and The Dubs in Liverpool again. Was at a lovely show 'One Night in Istanbul' in The The Empire theatre the other night and an actor sang this at the bar after the show. A timeless classic.

  • never forgotten roonie and luke xxx

  • i love the second voice in chorus, think its ciaran?

  • @MsDodo117 its Ronnie surely

  • great rendition. In the chorus we also hear the deep bass voice of the great Ronnie Drew (RIP)

  • No words can describe how good this is.

  • Saw them at local club in the 60s, best live act and musicians l ever heard, just brilliant, luke kelly,s voice wonderful.

  • My father and his friend back in 1978 where "guards" in a pub in sneek, netherlands.

    They have meet them personally

  • Barney on the banjo is just fantastic.

  • at 40 years of age, i've seen and heard some great music.... but luke kelly and the dubliners are by far... pure joy... you could do more wrong than invest in a dubliners greatest hits cd! god bless!

  • Ronnie in the chorus sends a shiver down the spine. He Luke and Liam Clancy must be having some singsong above.

  • @aftermath842 My thoughts exactly my friend!!..A folk session in heaven!!!...God Bless Them.

  • Luke Kelly ist einzigartig. Was ist ein Künstler!

  • great song

  • Would put a lump in your throat. Rip luke(Legend)

  • Keiner wird dieses Lied wieder so singen wie Luke. Das geht unter die Haut.

    Phantastisch!

  • what passion! what diction! what memories he left us! gone at 43 years --way too young! ahh well its not about the number of steps he took but the footprints he left behind. thanks Luke

  • mighty song

  • I saw him hree times alive 1983 or something, I think he was not well at that time but his singin was still amazing. And what a stage presens... Ithink we were all a little afraid of him.

  • Did I get this song right? Would someone try for the West coast of America around Cape Horn instead of going across the Atlantic to America??

    How stupid!

  • Well, consider: The Panama Canal opened in 1915, and the Transcontinental RR in 1869. The Irish potato famine coincided with the California gold rush of 1849, at which time the only land routes to California were across an alkali desert followed by 12,000 foot mountains with no roads and only a few treacherous passes. People died trying to get there. So if the song dates from that time, then a seaman would certainly opt for the sea route.

  • no ur stupid lik it ony a song dont take it to heart boi and a v.good song at dat

  • Who says literacy rates are plummeting amongst the youth of today? Clearly not!

  • Comment removed

  • There was no overland route at the time so the only way to get goods to and from the west coat to Europe was as the song says.

  • Brilliant vocalist, and it saddens me that I'll never be able to witness him live now.

  • All their songs with Luke were recorded live (i believe), what you heard is what you got, quality.

  • could listen to this forever....Luke is sublime..

  • iam back again to listen brill

  • Luke was a poet, trobadour, geniuis, died too young, 43, Luke obviously knew the deep connections between Liverpool and Ireland, it's where most Irish settled after the famine turning it into the most Irish city in England, look at its influence, McCartney,Lennon, J Larkin, Carrager,McGovern,T P O'Connor-all of Irish origin, Luke knew this and fair play to him, go raibth, slan go foil Luke

  • and me I've got more root's to Ireland than any other country and it think of it as my home the emerald island

  • @MrMarcusirish

F**k off! Since when was Liverpool in England? I always thought it was that wee bit of Sassenach that was always Eireannach!

God bless all of us, and no hate towards the English either, we're better than that!

  • @MrMarcusirish Thanks, and Thanks Again

  • @MrMarcusirish Honest to god man I couldn't have put that better! Go raibh maith agat

  • Ah now what a tune F***ing brilliant haha

  • great stuff

  • Seamus O'Watts

Luke's rendering of "Leaving of Liverpool" is totally unsurpassed. It brings a tear to eye of all Scousers and Irish alike

  • must agree

  • Its the feeling he is able to convey, wonderful singer never anyone better!

  • Seamus O'Watts

Your right! Luke sang from the heart and the great Ronnie sang from his boots and heart too. But Luke is unsurpassed....I've given strict instructions that Luke is to be played at my funeral... at least eight songs.

  • I shall certainly not argue against the greatness of Luke Kelley ( I don't want Ireland invading Texas to find me ). But I always like to give Ronnie his due. If anyone could be a capable replacement for Luke, it was Ronnie. Salute to both.

  • And rest in peace, gentlemen. We miss you both.

  • Hate to tell you, my friend - but Liverpool is in England!

  • it might be in england but it has, is , and always be an irish city -my friend, nil satis nisi optimum.

  • I agree, except for the nil satis part!

  • @ttbrcvts Liverpool was the one of the main departure point for Irish immigrants to North America, especially to Boston and Canada. For people from the east and midlands of Ireland Liverpool was the international port. Go from Dublin port or Dun Laoghaire to Liverpool and then the world. Once you left Liverpool there was no return.

  • This is really a great song, sung with a lot of feeling. It reminds me of my early childhood in January 1960. My family didn't leave Liverpool then but got on a ship in Bremerhaven heading for Australia. Quite a long journey, longer than to the USA. What grieved me was leaving my grandparents. It's my song!

  • The loss of Luke Kelly never goes away. He's irreplaceable.

  • How true. He never will be replaced. He was a one-off as all great artists are. Slan, Luke, ta tu imithe ach ta do cheol againn go brach.

  • best singer they ever had

  • 250 years of guinness,cheers luke your a legend r.i.p.

  • Oh yes - Luke was really the greatest singer - and he is still !. I never heard a voice like his and I suggest I will never do. Farewell Luke !

  • there are other versions of this song by other people, I can't listen to them anymore after listening to Luke. in fact I have difficulty listening to any other singers at all, after hearing Luke...

  • amazinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • A great folk love song which echoes the seafaring traditions of my city.

  • whats the name of the guy with the really low voice?

shoot me i know i should know this but ive forgotten his name

he did a guest vocal on flannigans ball by the dropkick murphys

i think its him thats been suffering throat cancer. i love his voice. my grandad sings similarly to him

also luke kellys voice is beautiful

  • ronnie drew?^^

  • thnk you lol i feel so dirty for needing to be reminded of his name

  • the important thing is, that you remember his voice^^

  • ah true

    i love it

i think it compliments luke kellys perfectly

i dunno why but songs always sound so much sweeter sung with an irish accent lol

  • you cant top the dubs

  • definately

irish music folk in generally is just awesome. theres nowhere near as much bullshit as there are in some other genres these days.

  • i think these songs give you a spcial feeling, other music styles cant do this

  • I think that Tommy Makem equals them on his solo version of this ( - in the awful haircuts and Flares days)

  • i beg 2 differ for kelly sings of experience he first met ronnie drew on his way back from liverpool

  • A mighty tune for a mighty voice. Long live Luke Kelly. There's not a one that is up to par. In such an odd world these days...a clear-cut voice is just what the world needs.

Slan agut agus beannacht de leat!

    -Geoff Brady

  • I agree with pestlett. This is the best version i have ever heard. I am used to hearing it in a much more upbeat tempo, but this beats all versions I have heard. Thanks, kellyoneill.

  • What a voice simply beautiful the man is a legend.

  • This is the best version I've ever heard; the best lyrically as well. :) Thanks Kelly O'Neil for re-introducing me to Luke Kelly, I've heard his voice 100 times before at my Nan and Granddad's when I was younger and his voice stuck with me, but I never knew his name. Thank you a thousand times over for re-introducing me to Luke Kelly and my Past.

  • My Pleasure, :)

  • there are no words to describe this voice...

  • Just beautiful...one of my favorites. Luke Kelly is the master!

  • Brilliant 5 stars

  • LEGEND!

  • I'm a scouser so this song means alot to me!

  • Same here, my mind trips back to this song every time I leave the Mersey and the people I love.

  • Was that at the Floral Hall at Southport. I was there and it was amazing. Still remember the crowd "participation". There was probably a few scousers in that night !!

  • " Luke just raises the roof"

Well said Dubb............amazing singing and passion ding that!

    Regards from Spain

  • saw him and them in Southport, about 1979, he started the song, then sat down and listened to the crowd , who sung in a very low hushed voice , a hymn, it still raises the hairs on the back of my neck, powerfull indeed, thanks

  • There are so many versions of this song and none come even close to this. Luke just raises the roof. Listen to the reaction of the crowd at the end. They know greatness when they hear it. I always felt that Luke almost NEEDED to sing to survive. It was that important to him. And God, could he sing !!!

  • Luke was a good skin.

  • i dont give a fuck what any man says... you will never put the irish down!

  • Wonderful Luke. Just wonderful. You are still unbeatable. Still the best of them all.

  • It does not get better then this. Thank you Luke.

  • Luke Kelly was the man!

  • pure class

  • Einfach W U N D E R S C H Ö N !

    Danke für die Einstellung :-)

  • once saw him drunk in a pub in dublin and regret ever since deciding not to intrude cos he looked sad.the best.Draws the soul.

  • this is probably one of my favorite songs and luke does a great version like always

  • Pure Gold! That voice and the amazing banjo accompaniment from Barney. Makes your heart feel as though it is going to burst!

    Now I want to cry!

  • luke kelly was god proper dudliner

  • ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    atrudubliner

  • Drank with him one nite, he was a pisser, referrered to me as a "culchie bollox" but with that grin on his face. We sang late into the nite, He died six months later a huge loss but a blessing to folk and ballad music worldwilde, to quote the song " we're glad you passed this way"

  • Jesus are you are the lucky one or what!

  • PURE BRILLIANCE

  • My Dad took me to see The Dubliners when I was 6 years old!

Needless to say, they Blew me away! I know all their songs off by heart, to sing and play, and they hold very happy memories for me, my Dad is no longer with us, like Luke Kelly.

  • check out the pogues version of this, too...another great irish band...
