Hard to master. Elite pilots are few and far between for a reason. I'm wondering what kind of work is being done as far as new ship models and mads people have come up with for this... intriguing.
@Snipe42 No. It's trying to be the next Infinity: The Quest for Earth. We are a niche group, of a slightly different genre of space mmo. I hate when people make comments like yours, actually look at the forums, please.
Wow... added 4 years ago and the game still isn't out, in the meantime EVE Online has added so much more depth to their game and TODAY in fact they're adding the upgraded avatars ready for the next expansion which will allow us to walk around in stations and interact outside of our ships.... if Infinity can hold a candle to EVE when it eventually comes out great, but at this point I think it's officially vapourware.
It was uploaded 16th December 2006. It's right there under the video so no, YOU'RE wrong. It didn't come out in 2010, it came out 5 years ago unless the OP can time travel.
Yes, actually I did notice the PRE-ALPHA DEMO video that was posted and I'm still not impressed. The game is fucking vaporware, simple as. Check it's wikipedia page if you don't believe me, release date, 'To Be Announced' for a game that's been in development now for almost 6 years now. In the mean time, WoW, EVE and others are adding expansion after expansion. Is this game trying to rival Duke Nukem for pointlessly long development time?
@TornadoCreator wow and eve have bigger dev teams constantly working on the game but anyway i was only wondering if you saw that is all, not arguing against your opinion.
This game is going to bomb, a disaster..How many more space sims do we need , with the same over all gameplay dynamic of ships , and ships and ships, shooting at ships in space..no avatar, can't walk around in your ship, can't customize it, can't land on a planet and establish a colony, can't explore planets as an avatar, can't transport other player avatars on your ship , no FPS , no boarding ships in space , fighting your self in with marines. When will game devs figure it out?
@GeekMatrix You'll be able to explore a truly massive amount of planets, and colonize them. You buy small ships, then big ships, then space stations, then build cities, then buy planets. read the site, this game is going to be absolutely massive with alot of uninhabited planets to explore and stuff. Look up some of the pre-alpha tests as well. The scale is brilliant.
@GeekMatrix oooh.....about the time that any of that is even possible.
you realize you're asking for a single developer to create 3 games that fit into each other flawlessly, right? it takes years to make a single MMO. It takes years to make a single FPS. It takes years to make a single Flight Sim. And you expect the technology to be available for all 3 at once?! and you expect it to be playable with our level of internet right now? you, sir, are insane.
@GeekMatrix you CAN land on planets, and they are real sized and there are like 200.000.000.000 stars where you can go to in this game, most with planets etc and there are a lot of nebula's. You can land in other ships. and you can colonize planets by building city's on them, this is just a test for the movement of ships and battle scenes. maybe you need to know more about a game before you say there is nothing in it.
I hope you can customize your own ship like the size and different mounting points for weapons and such. Rather than per built ships and every ones ships more of less look the same.
Pantera, you can fit any ship out for any job you feel like, its a very un-specialized system, no specific ship roles, almost the exact opposite to Eve Online. Still, ships will be standard factory finished, but most will allow for custom colour paintjobs and a few are modular for that little bit extra personalization.
Weylin, did you read the bit that said "This is a completely separate program that only shares the engine. It does not represent what you will find in Infinity", it clearly says that right next to the picture, so it's obviously not going to have good gameplay, its a standalone tdm.
That's easy, you can simply make a program that generates terrains using a seed value using various algorithms for various things, planet sizes, orbits, surfaces, etc.
It's been already done before anyways, but on a lesser known game; StarQuest online. Too bad it's an indy game with a lot of bugs and lag issues still.
It's more in-depth than this game will ever be despite it's retro graphics.
also starquest only had 17,000 star system, infinity is going to have around 200,000,000,000, it did sound interesting tho, same sort of thing as infinity
In this "prototype"(!) there are 2 types of weapons; plasma guns and heat-seeking rockets.
Ofcourse this prototype does not represent what you will find in Infinity. Its goal is, namely, to test: the graphics engine, the physics engine, the networking engine, experiment with controls / combat mechanics / balance, to improve stability/fix bugs and measure/stress performance.
Nice=) The realistic phisics (more realistic than in most games;)) reminds me of Homeplanet, wich was a great game... Graphics is good, but yet has ways to be improved (check out X3 for example). Guess the game's worth of it, starting download=)
P.S. if it has a great storyline - ICP already IS a great game=)
YES!!! this does not contain the level of annoying realism where ya dont even see the guys you are fighting (space is big), awesome, if only the ICP game worked, and didnt give the connection failed error...
oh my god i want this now! if its like Elite on drugs my dream will come true !!
gotta try the prototype.
And for EvE, i tried it but i got bored really fast, i hated the fact that the combat was automatic...the non ship control was killing me. but hey, i m a shooter guy.
In the final product, to let anyone new to infinity know, you will be able to visit the beautiful nebula seen early in the video, and fly down to the surface of the planets (all of them I believe) in a seamless environment. Seriously, our entire galaxy is being promised to us.

Yes, very cool. I'm actually more amazed that this game was created by hobby modellers and programmers, and not industry professionals. Very inspiring.
lol 2 completely different companies, 2 completely different games, 2 completely different gameplay engines...That's not exactly how games work. They don't just merge because they are both similar to each other. Get over that pathetic excuse for a game and play a game that gives you REAL freedom over your ship. Infinity > Eve
EVE is supposed to procedurally render their planets and combat effects as of the March expansion also...So I'll just keep my eye on this game and stick to EVE.
Why pick a new game when the EVE is already doing the same stuff first and possibly better? *Not a fan of joystick* but is working on that too.
Cuz EvE looks nice but u get nothing done when playing it and it gets boring quikcly. The combat looks nothing like it's advertised. There whack attempt at making drones look like fighters you can pilot in on their commercials dissapoints every new player.
As the player begins to play EvE more and more he or she will realize they have a long way to go to be effective in that game. Hopefully this will not force the player to not be able to join the RP war of the game because of low skill level
I'm playing Eve till this is out. It'll be nice to finally pilot a ship instead of Eve's point and click nonsense. Also looking forward to flying down into a planet's atmosphere.
These wapons are not LASERS, lasers work more like flash lights... what we see here is a short burst of plasma heading a sub light speeds, plasma and light are different
looks booring. EvE-Online is much better. alot of weapons alot of fitings for ships then rigs(ships modificators, electronic warfare, energy neutralazers stuff like that. true here is atmospher. but eve have plans to make eve to something more than just ships vs ships you can go on stations and open your bars, craft some stuff. who knows there are rumors that in the future dont know when but CCP (devs of EvE) will give us atmospheric game play.
Notice the title of the video. It says this is merely a prototype of the combat portion of the game. Just about everything you just mentioned is going to eventually come to EvE is going to be in Infinity right from the get go. Trouble is, Infinity doesn't come out till later :/
well, those ships are already some 5 times longer than the largest ocean vessel on Earth.
In fact, I wish they would put a 20th century aircraft carrier, like the Nimits, floating around, just so people would get a better sense of scale (with 50th century starships, you usually dont get that sense, unless your ship is VERY SLOW like in Star Wars games)
As well, on the forums, they are talking about all kinds of weapons. This combat simulator is mostly just to test out the mechanics of combat. This is not how the game will be.
Projectiles, lasers, plasma, missiles, and ultra-long range weapons have all been suggested. (Meaning system to system combat)
I feel good for anyone who actually plays this game, it would be FREELANCER 2 or as close to it as you could get, I imagine (without the knubot conversation and visiting bars).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this game looked really bad ass when i seen the atmospheric demo....But honestly.. the combat looks kinda dull.. if its just lasers thats no fun.. You can't have a space game without some form of missile.. Or fuck id even take a proton torpedo even tho i hate star-trek with a passion..
looks neat but ive never understood the whole laser fighting thing. youd think that with all the precision and computing needed for space travel they wouldnt just blast rapid fire lasers at ppl. have something a bit more...accurate.
In rl most likely you wouldn't even bother with anything like lasers. Why would you when missiles could do the job so much better. But the point of games isn't to be just like rl, but to be much more intense and captivating. I.E. getting up close to someone and opening up with rapid fire lasers ^_^
i just wish there was a actual space combat simulator, one where shots would be precise and direct. and i guess you couldnt have much sound in the game as theres no sound in space..i dont think there would be engine trails either.
m8 in eve we have something that called dmg pr second where missiles are far behind a fast ship can outrun a torpedo. or a cruise missile. lasers railguns blasters artilery or projectile turets are all better then missiles
i completely agree with cynical about this... Lasers are lame IMHO.. Tho the accuracy problem is due to the player.. in this game you actually have to aim :P But yeah.. Missiles are not only more realistic.. There just cooler all around...Explosions vs Laser fire.. Explosions always win.. haha
While I don't quite agree that lasers are lame, I do agree that explosions are far more entertaining to watch. However, if you'll notice the title of the video says prototype. Meaning that the game will most likely incorporate more weaponry then just lasers. Nothing is set in stone as of yet.
Looking good guys. Keep it up! I may get back to trying to contribute models at some point but well like life tends to be, I've been busy. And if I don't, you can bet I'll be playing the game itself, that's for certain. :)
4. The explosions are too inconsistent and don't match the model. If you're going to have a flashy explosion (Good for Gameplay :) ) Finish it with a really big one. One last small explosion the same size as all the others just as the models disappears isn't impressive.
Lots of good things though:
Planet Models! VERY NICE! I love them! Did you use Terragen or WorldMachine?
The planets are just backdrop textures in the ICP. In the finished game they together with the rest of the Milky Way galaxy will be real-time procedurally generated at a correct scale.
I'm impressed with the work that's gone into this but (I'm always a critic) I have just a few suggestions.
1. The lighting on the ships is not natural to the environment. Try using Directional over GI.
2. The physics engine needs some tweaking. The constant ships shuddering through space doesn't look right.
3. The engines are way too flashy. Constant lens flares EVERY time they are used is a little annoying. (Good for screenshots but not good for gameplay)
I've seen no one who played the ICP say that the engines are annoying.
Also this is just a combat prototype to test the combat and networking. Weve added some eyecandy to please our community, but it was not planned in the first place.
The ICP is not an alpha build of Infinity, it's completely standalone and considered finished as we don't plan to spend more time on a prototype that did its job.
I'm very hyped for this game! It gonna be awesome! And please...dont compare it to X3, or Freelancer. This game reminds me to the great Frontier Elite! What an awesome game! It was ahead of its time! You had freedom to go to lots of star systems, and it was an intelligent game! It had very realistic physics, etc...
Elite, Frontier mmmmmm... that classic i'm still waiting for something like that in mmorpg style, Eve Online doesn't count because its more like Homeworld with just one ship, maybe just maybe Infinity will be what i'm waiting for - shame it won't have something i'm dreaming of - walking on own ship (planets too would be great) and having player crew (gunners, steer, radar and so on).
haha i love all the comparison to awful games here. what they're going for is an updated mmo version of Elite (which is disappointingly is still miles better than slow x3 or the arcadey freelancer)
The graphical engine is head and shoulders above EVE's engine. That whole seamless world thing is worth mentioning, being able to land on planets and all that. Also the fact, that unlike EVE, combat in this game is much more upclose and personal. Its no press attack, and then click orbit like in EVE. Its much more similar to say a combat flight simulator, but in space.
So yeah, maybe at first glance it looks like EVE, it IS in space. But EVE doesn't hold shit on it, anyway you look at it.

Why pick a new game when the EVE is already doing the same stuff first and possibly better? *Not a fan of joystick* but is working on that too.
lusulpher 3 years ago
Cuz EvE looks nice but u get nothing done when playing it and it gets boring quikcly. The combat looks nothing like it's advertised. There whack attempt at making drones look like fighters you can pilot in on their commercials dissapoints every new player.
As the player begins to play EvE more and more he or she will realize they have a long way to go to be effective in that game. Hopefully this will not force the player to not be able to join the RP war of the game because of low skill level

IS this Upgade from eve, Or new game?
hope upgrade.. :) keep my skills :)
Zachariah109 3 years ago
I'm playing Eve till this is out. It'll be nice to finally pilot a ship instead of Eve's point and click nonsense. Also looking forward to flying down into a planet's atmosphere.
selencia86 3 years ago
This looks interesting. I may try it, but for now, I'll stick to EVE.
mytoeismissindarnit 3 years ago
Hope there are going to be more than just blue and red lazers. I want to see some pulse beams and plazma.
warrat300 3 years ago
oh shit this game's going to devour eve
derickchou01 3 years ago
ugh, why must people keep comparing this to EVE online, i prefer this but can they both be great games, besides, they are almost completely different
supertrinko 3 years ago 2
These wapons are not LASERS, lasers work more like flash lights... what we see here is a short burst of plasma heading a sub light speeds, plasma and light are different
rfry 3 years ago
could someone explain how i can log onto the servers for the combat prototype?
chrislawless 4 years ago
looks booring. EvE-Online is much better. alot of weapons alot of fitings for ships then rigs(ships modificators, electronic warfare, energy neutralazers stuff like that. true here is atmospher. but eve have plans to make eve to something more than just ships vs ships you can go on stations and open your bars, craft some stuff. who knows there are rumors that in the future dont know when but CCP (devs of EvE) will give us atmospheric game play.
kerier1911 4 years ago
Notice the title of the video. It says this is merely a prototype of the combat portion of the game. Just about everything you just mentioned is going to eventually come to EvE is going to be in Infinity right from the get go. Trouble is, Infinity doesn't come out till later :/
Nessinian 4 years ago 2
and so begins the next wow vs. everquest argument...
altfreak2 3 years ago
this looks great but for the love of god make the capital ships BIGGER
wildone106 4 years ago
While I agree the "capital ships" in this video could have been bigger, the Infinity team is promising vessels that dwarf all seen in this video.
Just search for the Bellerophon battleship...you'll see ;)
Nessinian 4 years ago
well, those ships are already some 5 times longer than the largest ocean vessel on Earth.
In fact, I wish they would put a 20th century aircraft carrier, like the Nimits, floating around, just so people would get a better sense of scale (with 50th century starships, you usually dont get that sense, unless your ship is VERY SLOW like in Star Wars games)
rogerpenna 3 years ago
As well, on the forums, they are talking about all kinds of weapons. This combat simulator is mostly just to test out the mechanics of combat. This is not how the game will be.
Projectiles, lasers, plasma, missiles, and ultra-long range weapons have all been suggested. (Meaning system to system combat)

I feel good for anyone who actually plays this game, it would be FREELANCER 2 or as close to it as you could get, I imagine (without the knubot conversation and visiting bars).
cutelilmurderer 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
this game looked really bad ass when i seen the atmospheric demo....But honestly.. the combat looks kinda dull.. if its just lasers thats no fun.. You can't have a space game without some form of missile.. Or fuck id even take a proton torpedo even tho i hate star-trek with a passion..
Ultimabong 4 years ago
mabye you should play before saying it sucks
CUS THERE IS MISSILES U TWAT
scrapper1281 4 years ago 3
looks neat but ive never understood the whole laser fighting thing. youd think that with all the precision and computing needed for space travel they wouldnt just blast rapid fire lasers at ppl. have something a bit more...accurate.
cynicalprophet 4 years ago
In rl most likely you wouldn't even bother with anything like lasers. Why would you when missiles could do the job so much better. But the point of games isn't to be just like rl, but to be much more intense and captivating. I.E. getting up close to someone and opening up with rapid fire lasers ^_^
avis57 4 years ago
i just wish there was a actual space combat simulator, one where shots would be precise and direct. and i guess you couldnt have much sound in the game as theres no sound in space..i dont think there would be engine trails either.
cynicalprophet 4 years ago
m8 in eve we have something that called dmg pr second where missiles are far behind a fast ship can outrun a torpedo. or a cruise missile. lasers railguns blasters artilery or projectile turets are all better then missiles
kerier1911 4 years ago
i completely agree with cynical about this... Lasers are lame IMHO.. Tho the accuracy problem is due to the player.. in this game you actually have to aim :P But yeah.. Missiles are not only more realistic.. There just cooler all around...Explosions vs Laser fire.. Explosions always win.. haha
Ultimabong 4 years ago
While I don't quite agree that lasers are lame, I do agree that explosions are far more entertaining to watch. However, if you'll notice the title of the video says prototype. Meaning that the game will most likely incorporate more weaponry then just lasers. Nothing is set in stone as of yet.
Nessinian 4 years ago
there are missiles too tho if u buy in ur battleship for 50cr ea
scrapper1281 4 years ago
Sadly no mac verstion is comming -_- I will just run it off boot camp -_-
coolass222 4 years ago
Looking good guys. Keep it up! I may get back to trying to contribute models at some point but well like life tends to be, I've been busy. And if I don't, you can bet I'll be playing the game itself, that's for certain. :)

Comment Part :
Models and textures. Very, Very Nice. Am I right to assume that this is already real-time renderable?
Lasers also look nice.
I love the obvious use of shields. It gives it a much more real feel.
All in all. Very good job. I love it.
I am currently working on a project with another programmer for a similar game idea.
... Looks like we have some competition. :)
WalkinStummik 4 years ago
Yes, its all real-time and can be played by anyone for free, just take a look at the infinity website.
Betelgeuze01 4 years ago
Comment Part 2:
WalkinStummik 4 years ago
It ends in one big explosion, play the ICP and you'll see it.
Betelgeuze01 4 years ago
The planets are just backdrop textures in the ICP. In the finished game they together with the rest of the Milky Way galaxy will be real-time procedurally generated at a correct scale.
threedotsdead 4 years ago
Comment Part 1:
I'm impressed with the work that's gone into this but (I'm always a critic) I have just a few suggestions.
1. The lighting on the ships is not natural to the environment. Try using Directional over GI.
2. The physics engine needs some tweaking. The constant ships shuddering through space doesn't look right.
3. The engines are way too flashy. Constant lens flares EVERY time they are used is a little annoying. (Good for screenshots but not good for gameplay)
WalkinStummik 4 years ago

Pritub 4 years ago
Elite, Frontier mmmmmm... that classic i'm still waiting for something like that in mmorpg style, Eve Online doesn't count because its more like Homeworld with just one ship, maybe just maybe Infinity will be what i'm waiting for - shame it won't have something i'm dreaming of - walking on own ship (planets too would be great) and having player crew (gunners, steer, radar and so on).
Arkanen 4 years ago
100% with you dude . why did braben foresake us i need elite 4
cv6ady 4 years ago
Something like that (and way more) is coming ^_^ (and it aint this game)
SystemXS 4 years ago
What game are you talking about ? They wanted to make next Frontier but that didn't happen and surely won't in near future.
Arkanen 4 years ago
A lot of space games are "coming," what's your point? You say "^_^" like you're in the secret services
ligyro 4 years ago
haha i love all the comparison to awful games here. what they're going for is an updated mmo version of Elite (which is disappointingly is still miles better than slow x3 or the arcadey freelancer)

Hey, this can be like Eve, only without crappy gameplay or cheating devs!
Wait, that means nothing like Eve at all...
Johnmike811 5 years ago
Homeworld.... Err, not exactly a fair comparision. Homeworld is a RTS and it's 8 years old...
sneakeypete 5 years ago
What can I say...
Awesome! This game is the best wannabe space sim so far. Since Freelancer nothing attracted our attention.
Eve completely sux. DarkCrapStar One my ass.
Free Space 2? Hahaha No multiplayer. Infinity has what we dream about for years. Only if it become truth...
JoaoSilvaBrasil 5 years ago
Um... Freespace 2 DOES have multiplayer.
Anyways, awesome trailer. Can't wait for this game to be released. :)

This game is gonna rock! This wont even compare to Eve...
Uranium210 5 years ago
It looks like Eve. Except boxier.
LithiumZ2 5 years ago
The graphical engine is head and shoulders above EVE's engine. That whole seamless world thing is worth mentioning, being able to land on planets and all that. Also the fact, that unlike EVE, combat in this game is much more upclose and personal. Its no press attack, and then click orbit like in EVE. Its much more similar to say a combat flight simulator, but in space.
So yeah, maybe at first glance it looks like EVE, it IS in space. But EVE doesn't hold shit on it, anyway you look at it.
