No, I haven't built or flown one myself. It's my understanding that the original design was difficult to fly. And I've heard that from RC modelers as well. But I could be wrong about the Gullow's model.
I have one and it's easy to fly but I've been flying RC for twenty years. The reason the original was difficult to fly was that it was very hard to see out of therefore it was hard to land.
If you are new to RC get a foam high wing trainer to learn on, after you master the trainer, the Spirit of St. Louis like all high wing planes will be quite simple to fly.

Yes this is the Guillows version. I had to add extra spars and ribs to accommodate the control surface hinges. I think I used figure 8 stitching with dental floss or cotton...not sure....it was a long time ago

how do you know it's unstable? did you build same one. I've just started my "spirit of st louis" and i'm trying to get as many info as possible.
