  • this stuff is awesome

  • OMG THAT WAS AWESOME!

  • I just tested this engine on trainz. It is a beauty

  • @TurboJUK that is awesome

  • dude when did you take this awsome video

  • Nice documentary on one of the last 2-10-0 classes to be developed. Suppose the United States steam-locomotive market stayed open late enough for Lima Locomotive Works, Inc., to develop a 4-10-4 Super Power passenger locomotive! (GM and Alco were competing for the U. S. Diesel-electric market when the 9F's were built.)

  • As my dad said most of the older Fireman didnt go much for them as with the driver on the otherside it made traditional firing difficult

  • @ukusagent there were a couple of 9fs which were converted with automatic

stokers for a experiment making the fireman redundant I dont know if it was a succes

  • @locoman1963 My Father said thay where not too succsessfull, Just before my Dad made Driver, He and his Driver tested a Oil burning Steamer . The inspector that was with them Kept interfering, saying they had the Fuel air mixtures wrong , as it was making heavy black smoke . The Driver hit the brake stopped the Locco and kicked the inspector off the footplate

  • Very interesting, I didn't know the 9F's performed so well on passenger trains.

  • The 9Fs were the best British Steam engine, no other loco class comes close to being as versatile as these beasts. Heavy freight or fast express, unbeatable!

  • There is a utterly "Brilliant" upload about the Somerset and Dorset on You Tube, the first is called "Return to Evercreech Junction" and "Branch Line with Sir John Betjamin".They are really worth watching even if you are not a S and D Joint Fan.

  • where this video and mallar and the gresley A4's on the same dvd

  • apparently, evening star is black prince, cause the when evening star was withdrawn after the accident, when the owner of black prince, he found some green paint under the cylinders

  • @trainlover658 I have heard exactly the same rumours !!!.I heard Evening Star had a

accident,or it wasn't able to fixed before the Preservationists took over her. This meant that a imposter had to be found, now whether it's David Shepheards "Black Prince" or not I can't say. However these tales persist and they do make a lot of sence (as I suppose all conspiracy plots do). These Locomotives designed by Riddles are perhaps the very best of all Steamers, far better than the wooly Mammoth

    Britannias.

  • @flanneryged well... if evening star is "black prince", then what the hell did david buy from the works?!

  • @trainlover658 another 9F

  • @trainlover658 Who knows perhaps it was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,or even

the much fabled "White Prince".However Locomotive numbers like Cars top tags

and registration can be ER altered,I suppose some crafty Chap at Derby did it to

keep us guessing, seen as most of the evidence is now either a Washing Machines or Toyota Land Cruisers I would say he was pretty successful !!! Wouldn't you??.Damned conspiracies don't they just bug the shit out of you???. Next Question.

  • they didnt even give the 9F's a chance to get the money back that went into them

  • now we saw a preserved loco choo-choo-ing its way along preserved metals ... the commentator said that it had "rusted away" in a scrapper's yard for 'x' number of years ... so what happenned ? It slightly rusted but it did not rust away !

  • Theres a 9F for sale at the Midland railway centre but it hasnt got a tender and is in a terrible condition

  • was the 9F hand fired?

  • yes they are

  • Interesting stat in there that a 9F's driving wheels were doing 8 revs per second at 90mph. For comparison, Mallard's rather larger drivers were doing about 8.7 revs per second when it hit 126mph.

  • If I could have one in private ownership, I'd try and run it with a couple of passenger cars on the mainline. On the side of the cars, in nice clean letters, would be the words 'BR sucked in the 60's!"

  • Diesels can suck it! Bluebell FTW!

  • The bastards BR for removing steam. Is a complete disgarce.

  • The 60's were pretty evil for Britain!

  • @StarTux Naaa.... life got less repressive.... mind you the 1960s only reached my home town in West wales in 1972! Before that the teachers were a nightmare!

  • @StarTux you are so true withdrawing steam locomotives is the worst thing britian has done

  • Good to see David Shepherd the Artist getting a £3000 bargain!

  • Second hand not many miles outside has a few scracthes good as new! new mot and service

  • brilliant loco's,fired them on the gcr 'windcutters,annesley-woodford,happy days!

  • the 9F dont look like a britsh loco

  • That's because the 2-10-0 wheel arrangement wasn't as common in the UK as it was abroad. Also the fact that you have smoke deflectors and the body is raised up add to the perception you have.

Hell, even the green that BR used was called "Brunswick Green".

  • Pennsy Green. lol.

  • the 9Fs are my absolute fafourite engine (hense the username "92220") Great Video!

  • Great vid, I've been on the foot plate of the Evening Star in steam, sheer Awesome Power!!!

The heat, the smell, you just can't beat it. She really is amazing!!!!!!!!

  • Is Evening Star on a preserved steam railway or is it in a Museum?

  • She is based at the National Railway Museum at York.

  • Not any more. Evening Star is back in Swindon now. It got moved in August / September this year. I passed through Swindon on my way to Bristol & saw a huge sign advertising the relocation of Evening Star

  • It's in Swindon steam Museum NOW. Go see.

  • beutifull film, does anyone know if that is winwick junction at 03.55? thanks for posting

  • I love the 9F, just as bigger classic as the A4 or princess corination.

  • Can't beat the 9F steam engine

  • nice 9fs are my favorite steam engins bye far

  • i absolutly cant wait when diesel gose bye bye! and steam comes back. they cant afford to run electrical wire over all the tracks in the world. plus if the electricity faild it would stop and couldent move until the electricity came back on. with steam, if an engine broke down it could be reparid right on the spot or another was sent. speed dosent matter in my opinion. its the jorney and what you see along the way.

  • well if you think they got an A4 to 126mph in the 1930's imagine the level of performance that could have been achieved given another 70 years development........the top speeds may not be drastically increased, but reliability and efficiency certainly could have been.

  • i got a 5 foot wide tapestry of this loco on my bedroom wall my mum made when i was a kid

  • The 9Fs have to be my all-time favourite BR Class, and I am proud to say that I have driven 92203 Black Prince.

  • @TurboJUK I will kiss your feet lol

  • @TurboJUK didn't know that.

  • @TurboJUK Sure but a 2-8-2 version as originally planned would have been even better!

  • @TurboJUK. What year you drove 92203?

  • these locomotives are simply amazing. these and the Q1's!!!

  • The Q1'S are B-E-A-UTIFUL!!!

  • are you crazy? they're the most hideous loco's ever built :) hehe

Black Five.....that's what you want ;)

  • May I know which DVD does this clip come from? I've got to buy it!!

  • the 9fs were such a waste some were bearly 5 years old when they were cut up, alot never even lived long enough to get a general overhaul, it was criminal

  • it was criminal to get rid of steam

  • lovely locomotives but not a patch on the A4s in my opinion

  • The 9F locomotive are the best ever! I love the evening star and have an HO scale model of the locomotive!

  • Beautiful, great and very reliable machines, yep! I have the old Airfix 00 scale kit, a friend of mine got it for me. I am planning on assembling it soon, scraping off most of the cast-on handrails and piping and replace it by brass and copper wire and stanchions, plus adding missing piping and perhaps some more detail. Love that steamer!

  • This can be bought as a high qulaity DVD from Tele Rail on +44 01524 730500.

  • Fantastic footage and indeed likewise for the commentary :) One for the archives for sure :-)

  • ma 3rd Fav train

  • i love the 9F's! theyr one of my favourite locos around along with the Kings and the A3's

  • The one currently based on the EAST LANCS, 92214 is fantastic to see in action as they all where, especially the strange, CROSTI boilered versions.

  • Does anyone know if the Swindon ones were better by £5,000 than the Crewe ones? I remember seeing one each at Shotton and east of Didcot, plus one with the rods off near Shrewsbury ready for scrapping in sidings next to route to Welshpool/ Aberystwyth.... sorry sight. Thanks for the footage.

  • nice footage of the 9F's.Very informative
