Cigarettes are hardly "luxuries". In fact, about 32% of smokers in the US are below the poverty line; only about 18% of smokers are above the line.
The government, has the power to tax. Last time I checked anyway. I sure have no problem with it taxing smoking and tanning beds. Your quality of life won't suffer without these, that's why they are luxuries. It's not like these 32% were mandated to smoke. If they want to sue for unfairness, they ought to look at the tobacco companies. I'm telling you, a lot of us don't realize it, but we live way above our means.

Between the 2.3% excise tax on medical devices, the 10% excise tax on tanning salons, annual fees on imported drugs, and the average increase in medical expenses from 7.5% to 10% of avg. income, I find it hard to believe that this will affect the American people in a tax-free way.
Especially not since Obama has left the question of a "value added" tax (or national sales tax) wide open.

No, consistent with the 1964 Civil Rights Act, he and most Republicans are against race based affirmative action. Helms was elected in 1972 replacing segregationist Democrat B. Everett Jordan appointed to the Senate in 1958 who voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Get your facts straight and stop believing revisionist history.

I think we need more name calling and a bigger split between the right and the left. Or we could be polite and discuss the merit of the IDEAS. I bet both sides have some good ideas and both sides are peopled with smart people. I don't like the crap-o-meter approach. Obama is not more a liar than the politicians on the right.
