Disney "ruined" it? Seriously? Of course Disney movies aren't realistic. They're aimed towards CHILDREN. And maybe the endings are all unrealistic to a fault. But personally? I love them for that. When the rest of the world is screaming at me about everything, Disney movies are just one of those things that is steady, sometimes silly, but always sweet, and I love them a lot. I'd take a Disney movie over a lot of movies that are being made nowadays.

I think the Andersen version is better then the Disney version. Just because the little mermaid should of learned from her reckless decision to leave her family and risk her life for a boy she met once. And she didn't even meet him, she just saved him. But disney is a classic kid movie, it's meant to have a happy ending :)

No, Anderson's version should be more appreciated simply because it's more realistic. Disney has a reputation for ruining endings by making them happy--take The Hunchback of Notredame for instance--the ending was shit.

You know how at the end of the story (the original) the little mermaid turns into a spirit of the air and is going to try to earn a soul for herself? Well, some people even question if Anderson really ended the story like that, or if the story ended with her becoming sea foam and that's it. I actually prefer the second.

I doubt you've seen an anime, whose shortened title is lilpri, but it has three "princesses" in it, little girls who transform into the likeness of princesses and sing. One is a Japanese women from a tale about rejecting men because she was from the moon, i can't quite remember the name, the other two were cinderella and snow white, trust me, they were pretty much copies of the American version.

Well in the real version it is not clear what exactly happend. However, the FIRST real original version that the writter (Hans Anderson) whanted to write is far worse. But he got much critic about it giving the wrong message for children (which I compeletely agree whit) and there for he had to re-write the ending.

Thanx to that it became very dull about what exactly happend in the end (party bcuz of spilled ink).

The little mermaid was written by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. It was a popular fairy tale and was written in 1836. Disney just changed the ending and added music. Basically, the little mermaid says that the other princess did it, and the prince fell in love with her, no matter how enchanting the mermaid's dancing is (yes, in the story, the mermaid is an amazing dancer) he ends up marrying the princess the mermaid, supposed to turn to sea foam, is given the choice to stab the prince. She does not, for she still loves him, and instead of turning into sea foam, she turns into a "child of the sky" (angel) at least, that's the version i know.

Why are so many people ratting on Disney? I'm not saying that Disney's version of all the stories is good compared to the originals, but Disney remade these stories FOR children, as FAMLIY films. He never said that they were the same or original tales or that they were just as good; people made that assumption on their own. I'm not sure many of these people understand the intention behind the original story. The writer had the Little Mermaid punished for having "unpure" thoughts of the prince (falling in love with him when she was not supposed to), and disobeying her father to pursue her own dreams. Basically, his message was that girls needed to stay home, be obedient, and not have premarital sex ever or they'll suffer horribly like the Little Mermaid did. Of course, the Princes gets off free.

I believe both are "beautiful" in their own way

I think Disney doesn't want someone to die and just want a happy ending to show people that if you try your hardest and be good, you'll have a happily ever after

but Han's is also beautiful, the story, of being an air spirit(though originally Han made the mermaid died into sea foam and nothing else) and being good someday able to go to Heaven someday, both are good stories in their way I believe
