I am not sure about your finicky taste buds, by my mouth says YUM to all the fish except the first jack which had some type of funky growth on it. That is why I speared it. I did not want the other fish to get infected by it when it dies and gets eaten. If you count the number of fish taken in this video it does not amount to much considering the thousands of dollars I spent to catch them. And finally as a side note - Catch and Release is not always successful. I CATCH WHAT I EAT!
half those fish have poor eating quality.. why kill it you bastards? catch and release it with a hook and line, way to go man youre pushing overfishing
c0rew, The blood can attract sharks, but the areas we dive do not have high numbers of sharks, so we are not concerned about it. When I dive around sharks, I am quick to get the fish into the boat and I always have a safety diver with a loaded speargun nearby for safety while I am landing the fish.
Syllablerox, coming across bill fish while spearfishing is not that common. I have only seen 3 sailfish in my life and that was the first one. I wanted to try eating it. The meat was a bit tough but I found it very tasty.
Considering that the Rooster fish was close to a world record, I had no qualms about shooting it. In fact the mexicans that took me out prepared the fish in a type of soup called "Bondigas" and it was GREAT!!! I would shoot one again if they could re-create the recipe. You should try it some time.
* Excellent fishing, good catch parts, the only thing wrong was a bad shot that gave the needle, he began to swim in different directions and quickly, a threat to who was taking video and clear fisherman ..! ! In the end, managed to get, or they run away ..?? sub concienia fishing with ..!!
haha, thats the theory, but in practice its alot more physically exurting, and a bit more dangerous, you have to practice holding your breath, you have to stalk the fish, you have to know good fishing areas, and u got to watch out for sharks, but its great fun, but i wouldent say easier, its different
lets take the dangers of shark away. you can use a tank right. i'm not talking about how its supposed to be done and this and that is cheating which is not. i just want the most effiecient way of getting a fish onto the boat.
line fishing is probably more efficient, you can go line fishing all day, but its much more difficult to go spearfishing all day, the major difference being that spearfishermen dont leave loads of nylong wrapped arround the environment, and spearfishermen also select what they want to harvest
by line fishing i mean with a fishing rod, yeah hooks, bait, sinkers etc.. there are 2 main kinds, trawling where the bait is towed by the boat, and bottom fishing where u stay put. you dont use a motor to reel them in, you can in the case of deep sea bottom fishing because that is way too much line to reel in, would take hours. but apart from that you use manpower
wow. thanks for all that info. so much air has been cleared up around me. i see boats called trawlers everywhere and never knew the reason why its called that. but guess thats my fauly for not looking that up. im just mesmorised by all the tuna fishing and being on a boat. i see some videos of the boats that they using hands to pull the line up. thats the main purpose of the trawler boats i guess.
@rps13sr Trawlers are actually just dragging big nets behind their boats to catch EVERYTHING. Very destructive, but most fish you eat in shops etc are caught by trawlers.
TROLLING is where you drag lures behind the boat to target certain species.
I do not stab fish like that any more. I finally missed and ended up with 6 stitches in my arm. The video was not filmed in California. These fish do not live here, we were in Mexico.
Fucking oath bro, many seem to think its barbaric and cruel but I see little difference in comparison with H&L, except the fact we choose what we kill (most of the time)
no need to be scared of going spearfishing dude, start off on shallow reefs with smaller fish then work your way up to the big fish and deep waters. a good way to practice holding your breathe is at a local swimming pool or so. duck dive with fins and a mask on and see how far you can go.
good luck mate! im waiting for summer to come around so i can get back into it myself!
i havent tryed spearfishing but my diving teacher speared a huge tuna bigger than a normal human being when he was diving its illigal to do so but it dragged him for 60 mins and then blead to death :)
This is an awesome video. Me and my Father are going soon. I just got me wetsuit as did he. I cannot wait to go. Nice pirates of the Caribbean music, it suits the video =]
thats how he busted me about my license i got a $300 fine there strict in fl my friend got his boat impounded for this yhe got it back from court lucky nice vid though
It depends on the location and time of year. They are fairly common, but are rare to see over 40 pounds. Their meat has a stronger flavor then most fish.
If the shot is not perfect, the fish will always swim away. The bigger the fish the harder they swim. That is why we use a break away system so the shaft line is connected to buoys at the surface which help put resistance on the fish. We then hold on for the ride and pull them in.
Catching tuna is hard work, but very satisfying when you hit pay-dirt. Thanks for sharing the excitment of the hunt! Loved the "pirate' music at the end of hte vid.

You have some great videos Dan. I noticed you have reflectors on your fins. Is there a special purpose for this?

@awlyons2 , reflective stickers on my fins are to attract predators. Hopefully only big fish, but sometimes sharks also. ;-)

More sailfish die because of Hook and Line fisherman than because of spearing. Releasing a fish from H&L doesn't mean 0% mortality.
So relax, sit back, and enjoy watching an extremely difficult achievement by an obviously talented diver.
Fishing and Spearfishing are kindred spirits, there is zero reason for hostility towards our sport. We do the same thing, using different methods.
Spearfishing also maintains the lowest bycatch of any fishing method. We too are conscience of the fisheries.

Some diving locations require every diver to use a "diver down" flag, but that usually is unrelated to having a fishing license.
freedivingdan 2 years ago
thats what im talking about if your spearfishing you will need a license i got stop because i left my diving flag at the shore lol

No, you do not need a fishing license to freedive, but you will need one in most places if you want to catch fish.
