  • Is this allowed ?

  • "ACE !"

  • wow i didn't even know that was allowed in tennis!

  • @bundeligafan You can serve however you want, just has to get in the box

  • Did the ball died?

  • I don't get why people call this kind of serve garbage and any pro can return it. I see drop shots during rallies all the time and a lot of the time the pros aren't able to get to them. If you're able to master a short serve that barely goes past the net then I can see that as being an excellent way to mix it up. Especially if you're someone like Isner or Karlovic where people are expecting a power serve.

  • u have to have balls to try this out against someone as volatile as tommy haas, he's crazy at the best of times

  • Bad attitude/thinking from the people here saying that Karlovics Serve is disrespecting or just a desperate serve because he's anxious that his fast first Serve might not get in..

How stupid can you be ??

Let me guess, everyone who said something like this is a 100% Baseliner..

Just because you would have to run or you wouldn't be able to get the ball doesn't mean it's an unfair move..

    It's just outplayed..

The smarter one wins not the one with more muscles ! ;)

  • wtf is haas doing so far behind the baseline?

  • @postflopper He expected a hard serve but instead Karlovic dropped the ball so he couldn't reach it ^^ Pretty clever :p

  • This is a great tactic, since Haas was standing so far back.

It wouldn't work against a better returner, or someone faster, e.g. Djokovic.

  • karlovic makes the powerade bottle look like a toothpick

  • Well, his cheeky smile after it says it all, it's for fun .. It's 40-0, Haas is standing ridiculously far away. Nothing unrespectful

  • genius! Simply world-class

  • I would do it for fun agains't my friends, but not on a tournament or a serious match

  • @Gunthix209 Hingis did it, but what does it matter what you would do?

  • @thirsten89 Particularly on clay, drop serving is deadly. Of course, it shows u can think and use court coverage agains't him, but it doesn't show professionalism, anyone on tour can drop serve. On a professional level where people pay 700 buck to see a match, they don't expect players to mock around. Of course once or twice a match is funny, but it's best to avoid for moral reasons.

  • @Gunthix209 Why it is ok in other sports then? In cricket you have people that are able to bowl at 98 mph but also a 40 mph ball is perfectly acceptable. Same thing goes for baseball with some ridiculously slow knuckleballs. A long time ago womens tennis was actually only underhanded serves so it's not like there isn't precedence for it.

  • i wouldnt respect anyone who tried that on me... its bad sportsmanship... you just dont even try it out of respect for your opponent

  • @AceGuitarR7 Errrrrm, these guys play to win the match, if you KNOW you'll get an ace from an underarm serve, why not do it? Why put in the extra effort for the same result?

  • @AceGuitarR7

    Is it against the rules?

  • wtf, vuvuzelas in a tennis match? really???

  • What a cunt he is

  • i know that is allowed but that is shocking. i play at regional level and had that done to me as was disgusted. the guy who did it to me was so embarassed that he apologised. karlovic should know better than to be that cheap.

  • Surely that's cheating?

  • @zimuqian Nope, it IS legal...but pretty much socially unacceptable in pro tennis..

like how an onside kick is considered being a dick in football lolol

  • That's what I do as well. I'm almost as tall as Karlovic and people just withdraw to the very back of the court to return my serve. When they return my serve it ends up so short that I have the whole open court to end the point and I just dropshot them

  • haha look at haas moving back thats hilarious

  • What an Ace!

  • @kanov pros don't utilize this shot often because it's considered a disrespect to the other player and a low blow move. not to mention they would look stupid if they did it every time. i would go see noobs play for free instead of watching pros do lame serves like that.

  • @monarchSYNCHRO

actually pros just dont do it because if your opponent anticipates it, even just a little, you're doomed

most pros wouldnt mind winning ugly

  • the slow serve was an ace wow

  • Brilliant.

  • He looks like Steve Nash

  • karlovic is so annoying

  • showed how far back they need to stand against karlovic

  • rofl.

  • Michel Chang-like

  • i do this like at least once for each of my matches lol. So funny wen u see their reaction.

  • Haha, that was great!

  • hmm, My mistake, i did say inside the baseline didn't i >.> i meant on top or just outside the baseline but in retrospect, maybe I'm wrong, its the theory is all, stepping in is good, stepping back is bad.. usually but with the talented players we have on tour maybe theory's will be rewritten and we'll see the game evolve. Still, being stubborn, =D i still think at the very least you should be within a few feet of the baseline, stand way back is just not gonna work if Ivo is serving well.

  • hahaha nice ivo

  • cheeky cheeky!

  • a lot of people say that the only thing karlovic knows is big serve and is tall this video proves his smart

  • thats actually a really talented slice underarm serve. that generated alot of backspin. kudos karlovic.

  • haha when karlovic was about to serve, haas bolted back even more, then was like ARGHHH (when karlovic did that underarm serve) and then...no hope xD

  • haas didnt expect that xD

  • I want to see more of these

  • hahaha...very nice...i can only imagine how difficult it must be to do this successfully at the ATP level. At least Haas took it well- he looks like he really doesn't give a shit which is probably the best thing you can do in that situation.

  • ke kvron

  • That's something Chang did to Lendl some years ago in French Open I think

  • Thats right, in 1989!

  • cheeky bollox :P

  • did haas have to move a linesperson's chair out of the way to return?

  • GOTCHA!

  • IVOS JE HVEZDA !!:-)

  • karlovic has the fastest and slowest serve on the tour

  • Not the fastest actually, Roddick has the fastest.

  • yep,but he hold second serve record too

  • lol thats hilarious.....

hingis did that to graff also in french open final....although good ole steffi managed a return at least. Haas' fault really for standing so far back although his reactions could have been better

  • well thats coz Karlovic has such a monsterous serve

  • @polipoli7 not the fastest, sorry. that title is andy roddick's.

  • que chanchoso !!

  • Slowest ace of all time by Ivo Karlović :D how ironic!

  • lol karlovic is a beast

  • Great sense for humor.. btw Karlović is also a rapper :P

  • It's Haas's fault actually, he shouldn't have stood so far away from the baseline, no matter how fast the serve is. You can't possibly return a serve from there.

  • then you obviously have no idea how fast the pros can serve, you need the extra time that the extra distance gives you

  • Hahahahah, you're so stupid. You obviously don't play tennis at a proper level and you never played against a big server. In professional tennis they serve so hard there is no way you're gonna return standing inside the baseline.

  • Who said inside the baseline? he stood about 5 meters behind it. Even if he hit the ball, he would have to hit it with so much power just to get over the net, he would never return it dip enough. Karlovic would easily hit a winner.

PS. didn't Federer return Karlovic's from inside the baseline?

  • When you return a serve with that speed you only have to get your racquet behind it and block it back. It doesn't take any power because you USE ALL THE PACE of the incoming serve. You don't take a full swing on returns, its basically chipping/blocking and it's not hard to block it back deep. And if you can block Ivo's serve back, and you start a baseline rally there is a big chance of winning the really because Karlovic has very poor groundstrokes.

  • You OBVIOUSLY never returned a big serve and I don't think you've ever played a tennis match either. Please, learn something about the sport before you post a dumb comment. And Federer returns karlovic' serves near the baseline to CUT THE ANGLES, because Karlovic has a unique trajectory on his serve because of his height. If Karlovic wouldn't be making sick angles, federer would OBVIOUSLY prefer to stand much further behind the baseline to get much more reaction time and more chance of returning.

  • I guess that's enough said, you're completely wrong.

  • Stop talking about me, because it really doesn't matter. I've never returned a Karlovic serve in my life, but neither have you.

I have no doubt he needs to stand behind the baseline to get a chance to return, but he stood way too far, and paid for it.

Please show me one video of someone standing so far behind the baseline, besides this one.

  • Ever seen claycourt tennis? On Claycourts players often stand even further behind the baseline to return than in this video. I'm not gonna search for a particular video of that, because it's too obvious that you're completely wrong. I guess you never watched Roland Garros.

  • Yeah, Against an opponent like Ivo the best you can do really is to stand inside the baseline and block back returns and play your own service games smoothly.

  • stand inside the baseline? Against the player with consistently the most aces on tour?

  • he gets aces of the tremendous angles his height enables him to achieve, the only way to effectively neutralize angles is to come in closer to cut them off. It may sound a bit backward... but if your standing father back he doesn't even really need to hit a hard serve he just has to angle one off and make it unreachable.. if you close up at the very least you should be able to cut of the angle and put a racket on the ball letting you have a chance to get into his service games.

  • Also, the same theory is applicable in coming into the net by coming into the net you take time away from your opponent by hitting the ball earlier and neutralizing all but the most extreme angles and most accurate shots. Of course this is all speculation, i have never seen a serve past 123 so i can not even begin to imagine that kinda speed and that height must be simply ludicrous. So all in all you have a point most of us would stand back, the very talented few, will stand up. Murray,Fed, etc

  • all you had to say instead of that huge paragraph was to hit the serve on the rise, the reason Karlovic has never been able to beat Nadal is the very reason that Nadal is so proficient at answering balls from the back.

The chances of hitting those serves on the rise is a risk, but i guess you know more than every pro whoes played him and returning from the back.

  • I'd be interested in knowing what players you've seen use that strategy. Federer and Nadal who have been successful at beating him stay at the baseline. Show me a video of a player succeeding at breaking him by coming in.

  • Nice one! haha

They are all pissed off when he serves. Thank you Ivo for making this game fun :)

  • Making this game fun? This guy has nothing but a serve. Horrific groundstrokes, bad volleys, bad footwork and bad footspeed. Every single time Ivo Karlovic plays a match that match is extremely boring to watch. Ivo doesn't play tennis, he just serves. If he would have a normal serve like for example hewitt's serve, he wouldn't even be in the top 500.

  • Well my friend, Ivo is having about 3 000 000 $ in his pocket by now. Serve worth of 3 milion dollars, so he dont need other kicks at all.

Ivo is the talest player that ever entered first 100 so show some respect even if you dont like him. The man has 2,09 m so what did you expect? New Michael freakin Chang?!?

  • His height has nothing to do with technique, imagine how good he could be if the guy would have the talent and skill to hit good groundstrokes.

  • He's not as talented as all of the other players in the top 500.

  • I agree with you, but when you are tall, your coordination is weaker, you are slower, less mobile (he is the heaviest on tour also), so his ranking is a mirracle, against all odds. During the war in Croatia, he didnt have coach, or manager, or even money to train on tennis courts, so he often trained alone without opponents, just serving and serving, hour after hour... Yes, he is not talented, just a very hard working guy.

  • then you have to give credit where credit is due, maybee, if karlovic had a partner, he might of developed a more rounded game

  • yeah if he had a proper training i think he could really challenge for the grand slams

    i really like him

and don't forget he is also well educated

as i saw his name is Dr.Ivo on many websites

  • lol its a nickname Dr.Ivo Karlovic king of aces, giant from Šalata

  • Thats why I like him. He just serves and everyone is pissed of.

    Go Ivo! :)

  • whatever, you don't like a good match of tennis obviously.

  • Probably u r right, maybe I got tired of nerves breaking matches when Ivanisevic played.

Or maybe its just mater of individual taste.

P.S. I see u like Roddick maybe thats why u decided to write bibles here, he played well but not enough to beat Federer. Soon is davis cup between Cro and USA I would like to see Roddick vs. Karlovic match with camera zooms of Roddick face when Karlovic is serving. Yeah it could be very interresting tennis match whatever the final result is.

  • seeing that roddick beats karlovic most of the time, i doubt he gets scared, karlovic is great for the game though , i feel there aren't enough big servers around, and he's one of the very few who can volley well, simply because of his reach

  • genetic freak

  • LOL you talking about karlović, right? :) Or our prime minister in resignation? :)))))

  • ivo is the next goran...... some day he will win wimbledon

  • haha never

  • Karlovic is my 2nd favorite player after Federer, too bad there going against each other. The way Karlovic is playing, I believe he´s Federes biggest thread in Wimbledon. Many players have played perfect tennis agains him & they still lose because of one mini break... Even if Federer thinks this is not Tennis, you have to give credit to Karlovic, he does not have the speed of a 5,8 player but he compensates that with a tremendous serve & excellent volley.

  • @nekbeth Ummm his volley is nowhere near excellent. His backhand is ridiculously weak and his forehand is OK. He's mediocre at the net but he's a great player and great person.

  • @nekbeth HAAAAHAHAHA karlovic is federer's biggest threat! haaaaaaaaa

and when did federer say that "this is not tennis" man ur funny

  • @demondayzzz Karlovic has a bad record against Federer with only one win and Federer has an amazing return game that really hurts Karlovic.

  • Cool!!

comen on karlovic next round against federer!!

  • cheeky

  • looooooooool

  • Nothing wrong with this, isnt it? It makes the sport a bit more diverse. Once in a while these things can be delightfull.

  • I didn't notice it... Karlovic could win a point making a drop shot!!

  • Hmm... Does "fair play" exist in tennis?

  • Yeah but so does strategy.

  • He did not break any rule of tennis, so yes i would say this was completely fair.

  • Fair play, in its common meaning (In football, for example). It's clear that he didn't break any rule...

  • yes fair play exists, and karlovic exhibited it here.

  • destoroy....eat shit you smelly motherfucker

  • Lmao I thought you can't do that anymore

  • can u actually do that in tennis?

  • Yes you can. If the other is ready yes you can

  • That's soooo funny!!!
