I later discovered it's not actually duckweed. It's Azolla Fern. They are little tiny plants with one root just like duckweed. Duckweed grows under specific conditions, I think needs to be shaded. I've had some but they didn't last. Some places sell water garden plants sometimes have them in the water. Once you have some it multiplies.
