As someone correctly pointed out over a year ago, it is Julie Christensen singing here. For a brief moment I thought it was Joan Baez, it would have been magical if it was Baez, I knew it wasn't Jennifer Warnes. This version is on the Cohen Live CD released in 1994.

It is said Joan confessed to a sin. The sin was something like being "too proud". She refused to take back her belief that Jesus and Jehovah were two separate beings. Jesus was Jesus. Jehovah was Jehovah, his father. She confessed to Pride. (and well, if Charles was her cousin and not her brother...then there was another reason why she was forcing a replacement...so she was guilty of conniving and lying...rite?)

no. Jeanne d'arc (Joan of Arc)had fought for france in the 15th century, dressing herself as a boy. At age 17 she had freed France from the English under command of the dauphin. the dauphin later became king Charles VII.

when it was found out she was a girl, she was first brought to jail and later, when she did not heed warnings and wore mens clothes again, she was burned at Rouen. she was only 19 at the time.

In 1920 she was declared holy.

The female singer in this rendition is NOT Jennifer Warnes. It is Leonards former tour collaborator & background vocalist Julie Christiensen and also Perla Bettalla.

Jennifer Warnes never toured with Leonard Cohen. A simple look-see @ Leonards official websites will clear this up for you! Too bad Julie has been so mis-credited on YouTube!

jennifer did indeed tour w/ leonard in the 1970's ( i attended some shows) and in my opinion his BEST singer.

i myself am not a fan of julie's voice...a little too tight for me.

from wiki - she would eventually tour Europe with Cohen's band first as a back-up singer and then as vocal arranger and guest singer on Cohen's albums Live Songs, Various Positions, I'm Your Man, The Future, Field Commander Cohen and Recent Songs including a duet on a song titled "The Smokey Life".
