  • Another movie along the same lines is "Imitation of Life" w/Lana Turner and Juanita Moore...excellent movie...a real tear jerker. Susan Kohner played the actress in IOL. In fact, a lot of people mistake Susan for Natalie Wood. In fact, she does resemble Natalie. I've been wanting to watch Pinky for a long time. Thank you so much for posting this movie. God Bless you.

  • In 1949, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball just 2 years prior, Harry S. Truman desegregated the troops a year before, you didn't say black back then you said colored. For some reason when I ask people that were around at the time this movie came out, I can never really get an honest concrete answer to the reaction of how the movie did at the box office, an what people were saying about it. Interesting!

  • I have a special reason to love this film.

  • wow !!

  • wow !!

  • The movie is lousy, of course. And it's totally unrealistic. In the real life, Pinky would continue passing, would marry the doc, and not have any second thoughts about that. And everyone here understands it quite well.

  • "Dumb Title. Dum idea! Black woman resents the kids skin colour herself, otherwise why call her PinkY?"

  • This is such a sweet little gem of a movie. (Though I own it) Glad it's here for others to enjoy!

  • Woooooow. U found and posted this Gem that I have yet to find on DVD. Standing up while clapping loudly now! This movie could verywell be the foundation for beloved movie Imitation of Life. .......Such wonderful taste u have.

  • @504Diva Imitation Of Life was a novel wriiten in 1933 by Fannie Hurst and was made into the movie in 1934 with Claudette Colbert, Louise Beavers, Fredi Washington and Rochelle Hudson. If you want to watch it type in Imitation of Life (1934) - Part 1

  • Thank you for posting this. As a big Ethel Waters fan, I always wished to see it and always missed it on TV. I really enjoyed it; it is very thought provoking and must have been even moreso at the time. In such a racially divided world, Pinky didn't seem to belong in either place and the writers really showed what it was like to be African American in the South. It must have been groundbreaking at the time. Ethel Waters blows me away with whatever she does. Well deserved Oscar nomination!

  • This movie is so poignant. Ethel Waters has always been a favorite and you can just adore Jeanne Crain. One should see her in a movie called "Margie". She is so sweet. Thanks for posting this quiet but powerful film that I grew up watching with my family. It was thought-provoking at the very least.

  • This is an interesting film to me...because I am exactly like "Pinky"--a mixed-race woman who appears White. Also like Pinky, I've seen prejudice from both angles.

  • THANK YOU! I watched Little Foxes 5 times straight within 8 hours straight. I knew if you posted Little Foxes, you had great taste, and had more great classics; and here it is PINKY. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These movies teach so much about humanity, and how we treat each other black or white! My kids couldn't understand why I watch such movies, but I got them to watch their first one "Witness for the Prosecution, and they LOVED IT! THANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE CLASSICS!!!!

  • Thank you and you are most welcome. I wish my daughter would watch these great movies with me.

  • @Blacklily555 If it is possible could you post Witness for the Prosecution?

  • I'm actually watching this on TCM as I'm writing this and decided 2 look it up on my Blackberry 2 see if Youtube had it,and sure enough, its here. This film is AMAZING!!! Jeanne Crane is beautiful, even though they should've gotten a black actress, like Lena Horne,2 play the part. Love Ethel Waters.

  • Whilst it would be fabulous to see Lena Horne in a movie, having a black actress play the part of Pinky kinda defeats the storyline don't you think? Pinky had to be able to pass for white. Glad you like the movie.

  • @Blacklily555 Lena Horne would've been wonderful but she would've depleted the purpose because she really was black. For Jeanne Crain because she really was white, not only is the audience more sympathetic but they also have an understanding of how horrible prejudice was (and still is) from an outsider looking in point of view. Plus, I commend Crain for being so brave to take on this role at a time when prejudice was at it's highest. She is a hero in my eyes.

  • @estupido7490 On the contrary, I don't think Hollywood was ready to have a black actress playing a black woman who could pass as white. They could have picked Dorothy Dandridge and lighten her hair color; she would be more believable. But it would be a double Jeopardy for them: the subject matter, and having a black actress as a leading role.

  • @Blacklily555 Fredi Washington did in the first Imitation of Life.

  • @Blacklily555 I don't think it would. The definition of "black" back then was if you had ANY African ancestry, whereas today one or both of your parents have to be entirely black for you to be considered black (generally speaking). For instance, I am 3/4 white, 1/4 black. I look white, and consider myself to be mixed race, but just a few decades ago, I would have been considered colored. My point is they could have hired a quadroon to play Pinky, as we can easily pass for white.

  • @OfShadowandSubstance

    I'm sorry....quadroon? OMG. Really?!

  • @MrTracythomas1 Hey, I didn't invent the term. :P

  • @OfShadowandSubstance Well I'm also a "quadroon" but isn't the term "mulatto"? Either way I hate it. It makes me sound like a cappuccino or something lol. You guys should see my profile with a video of me on there. Bet you'd never guess my dad was half white half black... I think that's what Pinky was supposed to be too.

  • @OfShadowandSubstance I don't think ur right there because today 90% of blacks in America and the Carribean Islands are not entirely black this is why they have been bringing in things like sayings(Person of Colour or People of Colour) they may look black but they not entirely black, and just where did you get this from that one or both parents have to be black in order for you to be cosidered black,i think ur forgetting that one drop of black blood still applies in America

  • @OfShadowandSubstance Not all quadroons are White in appearance. African genes are the most dominant genes, just look at Nahla Aubry (Halle Berrys kid), Mariah Carey, But as you know genes can be very complex and any person of mixed ancestry can come out looking like any race.

  • @Blacklily555

Agreed. Lena Horne could never have passed for white. She was light skinned but definitely not white looking enough, especially for those days.

  • @Blacklily555 Thank you. You're one of my favorite people on youtube.

  • My goodness, I thought I'd never see this again. A classic movie I watched all through childhood. Meaningful, real.

  • Its going to be on TCM Wednesday Feb 3 at 8 pm

  • One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Jeanne Crain was perfect for Pinky.

  • @estupido7490 Isn't Pinky the original script for a following movie "Imitation of Life?" That starred Lana Turner. I don't remember the name of the black girl, who looked so white that she denied her own mother.

  • Love this movie..Thank you for posting it!
