OK my bad, the key is in Eb so yes one could (should) drop the E string to D. To be honest I have never had to learn the song to perform, else I would have paid more attention to the actual key. I just found it a good groove to play with. Good catch :0
No idea, I bought it used (well used!) for a bargain that I couldn't resist from a mate in his music store, so I am reluctant to quote the price as I do not think it would be a reflection. It's a 1992 so maybe you could see what they are selling for online somewhere?
sterlings and stingrays both come with single or double humbuckers its something to do with the magnets ni the pick ups they are different fin the stingray then in the sterling....just dont remember which ones are which lol
My SR5 was $2000 Canadian. A 4 string is probably a couple hundred less. Unless you get the HH model (two pickups), that's a little more. They don't make them left-handed though so I couldn't get it. Had to settle for one pickup.
Comes in at the music shop this week. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
wow I'm impressed and slightly unsurprised that your black. sorry if that sounds racist but I mean it's just kinda funny how the stereotype is followed every now and then. Great slapping and nice groove man I enjoyed it.
Great bass, sound and performance! Try a Music Man Bongo 5 HH, I think you will be quite surprised when you hear that sound. However, the Stingray is an amazing bass too anyway.
Thanks. I agree, I tried the Bongo and it is a great sounding bass and plays really well. I spent ages in the shop just noodling! Maybe one day, but I just had a need for the older classic.

You skip the D on the end of the main lick, coming back; thereby making the staccato just before it sound very out of place, where the hammer-on would be. Overall it was good though.
Thanks. You are right and i have played it that way before. I have to admit I never did intend it to be a faithful repro. I was hoping to get the vibe tho.
Yes absolutely! Because you can also get a rock solid tone as well as the phat. More than a one-trick-pony. Check out: Rage Against the Machine; Tony Levin in various bands; Prefab Sprout; Forever Now album by L42; Red Hot Chili Peppers Mothers Milk and Blod Suger Sex Majik Albums to name a few....
you get really good tones of the stingrays. jus bought one on saturday there. but i found that the double buck has a better tone range when compared with the single humbucker. i got a better 'mellow' sound of the double whuich i couldnt find with the single. iv heard though tat even though the double buck is versatile, it has a worse quality tone than the single, but i never found this and i love the bass i have. great playin by the way :)
Thanks. Tonewise I would expect the Stingray 'H-H' to possess a more broad range of tones. By dialing only to the bridge PU I would have expected to get the classic Stingray tones. I don't believe that the quality of the tones to be any better or worse than the other as it really depends on whose hands are playing and what tonal range they desire. Generally I would opt for dual PUs. The Stingray is exceptional as a single PU instrument and you get 'what it says on the tin'! Cheers :)
you would think that and i havnet found a problemtone wise with it. iv got the "billy sheehan" sound out of it and just the neck pickup gives you somethin of a double bass sound. its just that mellow. lol
dont listen to them people who say its limited tonal variety. i can get any tone i want out of this bass and i havnt a clue what im doing lol
Basically if you want to sound like a Stingray, there really isn't much choice other than getting a Stingray. Does anyone else out there share the same opinion, or know of a good replica?
Hey I remember those. A guy in another band that I was watching had one, and I agree, it sounded really round and funky. I wasn't at all knowing of the Stingray tone, but what I do remember is it sounded great
I would say 'Yes' you would definately notice a difference in tone and playability. How much of a difference depends on the quality of the replica. I tried a number of reps and compared them in the store. Some were 'okay' and others were a big disappointment. They had the look but not that unmistakable tone. Personally I don't see the point if you can't get the tone, you may as well hold out if your budget isn't quite there yet.
Check out a vid title 'Permutation on bass (the exact same notes'. The player uses a MM replica by SX from China. Sounds pretty good. Apparently MM sued the company!
I can only give an indication because I got a good deal from a mate in his music shop. Mine is an original '92. I recently pimped it by replacing the black pick guard with Abalone. New is $1100 - $1400 & you can opt for the maple neck or rosewood depending on your personal preference. Mine was under $800 used of course. The older the model the better IMO because they age to become seasoned 'funk machines'!. Seek out a good condition used for best value.
would you do me a favor? can you measure from the saddle of your music man basses' g string tot he middle of the pickup? I am building a bass and I cannot find any info on this. Nice playing btw.
Sure - it measures 3.5 inches from the middle of the g-string saddle to the middle of the pick up or if you are a metric man like me thats 89mm!! Good luck on the build and share it with us when you are finished!
damn... cant wait for someone to invent a time machine

Leo Fender sold MusicMan to Ernie Ball in something like 1980. Pre Ernie Ball MusicMans I've seen priced over 2 grand.
The StingRays have one Huge HummBucking Pickup and the Sterlings I believe have two which makes them more expensive.
