Ashfur's parents were killed when he was younger. the one who killed his mom had a son. A son whom he actually became freinds with. The one he loved. more than anything the one whom he tried to protect turned out to be only using him to get to his freind brambleclaw. A.K.A the ; "use the one you love's best freind to make the one who love jealouse" strategy. Put yerself in ashy's place. he must have been torn in half from that.
