I would be thanked if you reply to this, the past few days I have had like an Ferret obsession, but I don't know if they are good pets cause lots of people say they stink and poop a lot...Are they a good pet?
@1MegaSonicFan Only if you have the time and LOTS of money to care for their inevitable vet bills. Read the book "Ferrets For Dummies" and you won't have to ask silly questions like this.
@theaudieriggs I miss Dunk. He was such a sweetheart. Favourite name I've ever had for a ferret, too. Duncan's Gaelic for "dark-faced warrior" which is perfect for a black sable ferret :) Maybe I'll have a Duncan II someday?
Im residing in germany and ferrets are not as common as in USA. They are considered to be exotic pets here... I only get to choose from 5 diff kinds of foods two are the most expensive cost 17euros a kg... Its called Ferret Pro and has odour control in it. the other one is called ferret complete it also has odour control... both of these foods has no fish in them... they come from turkey mixed with variety of eesential fatty acids and taurin.
Oh germany... I come from germany to and have 2 ferrets, my sweethearts Odin & Baldur. I feed them "totally ferret", mixed with "nutrition ferret". Duncan is a very beautiful name... I also like scottish names like murtagh and doughal, I am realy sorry that you lost your little warrior ;(
No i never meant frequent baths... i dont nath mine at all ... very rarely they get messed and get dirty and i use baby wipes to clean them. I bathes mine twice when they got a kind of rash because of overdose of vitamin A. Mine are snow white albino...
ferrets odour can be controlled. Ferrets do not stiink seriously, when u clean their litter box twice a day and feed them quality food which has odour control...offcourse it costssss a lot but if you really care then you have one!!!get them the best food and most important keep them clean!!!
@toughplayer87 I've never heard of "food with odor control". The key is NOT feeding them food made with herring. Fish makes their poops STINK and it also makes them smell stronger. Also keeping the cage clean, like you said. But frequent baths? NO. Ferrets should only be bathed once or twice a year at most.
@Rvane123 See below - they're only stinky if you don't care from them properly and also if intead of quality food made with chicken/turkey you feed one of the cheaper ferret foods that are made with FISH.
Have you ever tried using like a sheet or a pillow case? well what I mean by this is that you place it on the floor place the ferrets on top of it and drag them around like a ride on the floor. our 2 boys love it and the little girl has been getting into it as of recently. A towel might work bettter. We have a old snuggie we use.
I wish I could have a ferret. My brother had 2 while he was living in Minnesota and moved back to California, bringing them with him (illegally) and they're were SO much fun. One would fight with boots and purposely jump off the back off the sofa and the other would steal keys and remotes. And we could always hear them 'falling' down the stairs .
@o56kid Yours may be because you never clean the cage, bedding and litter boxes or you bathe them too often. Mine, since they're owned by an experienced ferret owner, DON'T stink.
I like how when he stumbled he acted like there was something he needed to attack. I miss my ferret Chewy. I moved to California, got caught trying to smuggle him in, and had to get a friend who was going back to Iowa to pick him up in Yermo to take him back to my mom. He lived with her for several more years before he died a few years back. I might try and get another one or 2 soon.
@crimsonhearts909 Duncan was such a cutie pie. Anyone could hold him in their arms on his back and he'll fall right to sleep. He was such a cuddly little bug. I lost him just before his fourth birthday to Lymphoma :(
when I adopted a ferret a long time ago, he was so fat his lil back legs hardly helped him move!!! it was the tile floor that helped slide around n shit at first!! DEFINITELY fat compared to your lil chubby fellow here!! I miss my Billy boy!! he was a good albino fat fuck
Thats a very nice looking ferret. I have 5 myself. they are a lot of work and always having to clean. But well worth it. I even take them on vacation with me.
I love my ferrets; have 3 boys and they are my babies and spoiled rotten! I bought two and adopted one from a lady who could no longer take care of him. He seems so happy now with my two as he was alone before. One of mine is a dark sable like yours, one white and one cinnamon.
Also, I'm sorry for your loss of your past babies. I know this video is old, but it's hard losing a pet no matter how much time passes. :) I still have great memories of my pets when I was a kid.
Just want to tell you that I watch all of your ferret videos. You are a wonderful mother to your fuzzies and the rest of your animals.I've been visiting a ferret shelter in Virginia. I want to adopt 2 or 3 when I graduate from college this summer and start my new job. I have been doing alot of research. They are extrodinary, entertaining, and lovely animals. I love playing with the foster ferrets at the shelter. I'm trying to learn as much as I can as I know they are alot of work but so rewarding
Aww thanks :) SOOO glad to hear you're going about getting a ferret the RIGHT way! So many people get them on impulse without having a clue and then dump them at shelters once they see how much work they are. Sadly a lot of kids get them, ignore them and by the time they end up at the shelter they're far advanced with untreated Adrenal Disease or Insulinoma.. .it's very sad.
@Ferretocious Im a kid but i have many other animals and i am looking stuff up about them I know they need atleast 2hrs out of the cage a day but they like 4 better and females will die when they go into heat if not mated with.
@longwoodlady yeah she is!! i have a ferret her name's sasha! she so cute!! there r 2 or 3 vidz of her! plzz watch them! i want another ferret! just like the one in the video! cuz sasha isnt that dark but i still LOVE HER SO MUCHH!!!
My bad meant to thumbs down that one dip shit - - this ferret is perfectly healthy. If he was over weight he wouldn't be as hyper active (some times it won't phase ferrets lol) and if he is a kit than it is perfectly natural for them to have baby fat. Its actually very cute X3 Duncan's a cutie lol dw about him he's perfectly healthy and he obviously has a perfect owner :3
Wow that's pretty incredible. Let's see... over the past 12 years - one to cardiomyopathy AND adrenal, one to adrenal, three to lymphoma and two to insulinoma. Duncan was only 4 when I lost him to Lymphoma :(
aww :( *Huggles* I love ferrets and they're such good friends its sad to see them go. My animals are all spoiled until the day they depart and then I'm very um lets see untalkative and just stare at walls and such. I hate losing any animal to death and its a very hard thing to go through its like losing a kid to me. D: I even cried when my goldfish went down the drain D:
I think ferrets are very cute when they're that big - I had one that was that big for about a year (before I moved into a place with stairs, then she slimmed down quite a bit). Mine lived to about eight and a half - sorry for your loss. This one is one I'd have a hard time not carrying around and cuddling! He looked very happy and did a stair dance for us :)
And Duncan would have happily obliged to a cuddle. Anyone could pick him up and he'd just lay there and fall asleep LOL He was a sweetheart. 8 1/2 years is pretty extraordinary. Are you in the States? Was this a Marshalls ferret? Longest I've had one live was Ringo till 6 1/2.
Sadly, yes. Ferrets are prone to lots of diseases as they age - sometimes showing up as early as 3-4 years. Lymphoma, adrenal disease, cardiomyopathy, insulinoma. There's very few breeders here in the States so ferrets are very genetically week.
LOL he was only about 3 1/2 lbs. He was less than a year old with lots of baby fat. His hips were so wide that if he tried to go into the tubes they bunched around him LOL
Sadly I lost Duncan last year to cancer. He was such a sweetheart. Loved to be snugged. Would fall asleep in anyone's arms.
Sadly Duncan passed away right around 4 years. Total shock losing him as one night he just started acting a bit lethargic. Took him into the vet's in the morning and he went into respiratory arrest during his exam and passed away. Ends up his stomach was riddled with Lymphoma. I had had to drop him off at the vet's since they were booked. They were fitting him in for me. So when I had just gotten home about 45 mins later I got the horrible call that they'd lost him :(
Sad I wasn't there when he passed but then I'm not how I would have handled watching him go into respiratory arrest infront of me. He was a very special ferret. So sweet and cuddly and gentle. My favourite of all I've had over the past 12 years.
I had someone post "You probably killed him with cheap food" to Duncan's tribute video. What a horrible thing to say. I treat my pets better than most treat their kids! There's nothing you can do to prevent lymphoma.
Well, yes something can be done against lymphoma : no cutting balls or females. Cancers are caused mostly by sterilization. Here in France we sterilize or ferrets once their balls are here or when they are menstruate (6 months old) and they are living 10 years on average...
I heard that in the US you can't buy ferrets not sterilized, but if all ferrets lovers would act together to change it, you could prevent cancer...
I'm sorry for what happen to your sweet lovely ferret...
I totally agree with that, but this matter of fact comes from the same reason : ferrets are sold not able to reproduce, so no new breeders can't mix ferrets to avoid genetical issues... I'm not saying that we have no cancer here, or other issues (deaf are numerous because we are looking for "special" colors...) but yes they leave longer on average...
I'm definitly not pointing at you, I'm just saying that ferrets lovers maybe shall unionize to make things change.

He was actually just rubbing against the stairs - he was so happy! I love how he gave that little "ROAR!" after that. Duncan was the cutest.

Yes and when he did he looked SOOO huge because ALL his fur would fluff up - he was this big poof ball! Sadly, I lost Duncan last May to lymphoma :(

He was a youngster then with lots of baby fat. So much so that he couldn't fit through the tubes!

I'm serious! He would try to slide into the 4" tubes and they'd just bunch around him. And I swear the other ferrets were laughing at him!
