Such meaningful lyrics, beautifully accompanied by your guitarplay. Absolutely lovely. You are spreading love with your music and your generosity! We are having this song at our wedding in two weeks, too!

  • Terrific!

  • Very nice. Thank you

  • Thanks. Nice arrangement. I'd like to use it, myself.

  • Awww...such a beautiful rendition of Jon Lennon's song.. I could listen to you all day long. You have a very southing voice... Thank you for sharing <3

  • i like your version, better that Lennon's.

  • Brilliant! You sound like Gordon Lightfoot

  • This is a beautiful song...thank you for sharing this, it's very inspiring...keep up the excellent playing

  • Beautiful song and wonderful feeling......! Thank you for the music!

  • Thanks for that. Keep up the great music!

  • Hola MissGominolas.Where in Spain are you getting married? I live on the Costa Del Sol in Malaga province. I'm a singer guitarist..love this song and could certainly do it justice for you if you're interested

  • You may want to re-post this as a reply to MissGominolas' comment. She probably won't see this because it's posted as a general comment.

  • Okay! You are right! This is a good one. I like the one of you with your wife to.

  • Which one did you see? The one where we sang in unison? or the one where I sang harmony? The one where we sang in harmony was recorded at our son's wedding. I like that one the best, even though Laurie couldn't get through it without crying.

  • Oops, sorry I got mixed up! The song we sang at our son's wedding was the song we sang at our own wedding entitled Our Day. I have attached it as a response to this video.

  • Awesome... Love this song!

  • I am getting married next year in Spain , and this is an amazing interpretation of the song. Unfortunately, I can't afford to pay you the trip, is there any way I could get a recording? Although it might be possible for me to get someone else to sing it, I want your voice and your guitar!!!

It is so sweet it caresses!

  • I certainly hope you have that marriage you sing of - one of the souls. Best to you!

  • Laurie and I have been growing old together for 31+ years now.

  • I would like to commend you sir for your proclamation of your faith. Your version of this song is simply beautiful. Thank God for people like yourself that remind me that the world might still be good to an extent. God Bless and Good Luck!

  • I just listened to the duet with your wife. I think this one is more appropriate for my project. Do you have the duet in CD?

  • Not yet.

  • Can you burn the video in a DVD or do you have it in your file that can be sent through email? I'll pay for the cost.

  • I love this song and the way you sing it. I have been searching for this kind of lyrics (your version) for my video presentation for our Church Father's Day celebration. Do you have a CD I could buy that includes this song? Your prompt reply is appreciated 'cause Father's Day is soon here.

  • I'm sorry, no, I don't have this on CD yet.

  • Very nice :)

  • any chance you could send me the tab to the way you play it? it's wonderful :)

  • Very nice guitar work on this song.

  • Great cover , superb guitar work.Good job

  • Very nice! I love Glen Campbell's version of this song and of course the great John Lennon who wrote it - but yours is every bit as good. One song sung in three such different ways.

  • Wow! I didn't even know Glen Campbell sang this song! Thanks for the compliment! Blessings on you!

  • Hello,

    your version is very good!

    Thank´s for sharing.

    from Brazil,

    Cavatoni

  • Jack, thank you for the kind words from my vid or Grow Old with Me (on my son's site...heartsdonthate. I did it for my girlfriend, but sadly, she decided not to marry me, and ended the relationship. I trust God will help me heal and lead me to another love. She was my soulmate...not sure what happened and it's hard during the holidays. I had to leave my choir and church since she is in both and it was to hard for me to be around her. Peace & Merry Christmas.

  • That's sad, but on the other hand, isn't it better that she ended the relationship now than after you were married? God will heal your broken heart. Be of good courage, He wants you to have the desire of your heart. Wait on Him. It will be more than worth it! It may not seem like it now, but be patient. You'll see. We often don't know what's best for us, but God always does. Ask for His healing and grace. He is mor willing to give us the things we need than we are to ask. Blessings on you, Jon.

  • I always find that the children of older lovers can add the the break -up. You have to choose between them or you hearts desire.

  • The opening two lines are from a poem by Robert Browning. Of course for Lennon this was just too ironic as we know, his fatal encounter with Mark Chapman occurred within a year.

My dad wrote the couplet in a Valentine's card to my mother in 2005. Within two months she had contracted cancer and within four had passed away. I wonder if God deliberately punished for presumptiousness in both cases?

  • As for Lennon, he spent a lifetime mocking God. I doubt this one song he wrote, acknowledging God and invoking His blessing was the reason he died. What was ironic was the fact that this song was never properly recorded nor released before he died.

  • As for your mother, I hardly think that God would take her life in response to your father's quoting these lines from Browning's poem. It's rather more likely that she was ready to die, and that Satan saw his chance to plant seeds of doubt in your mind about His (God's) character.

  • Do you know theres another unrealeased gem of lennons called " help me to help myself". Its a kind of prayer set to music and theres 3 versions on youtube if you want to do a search for it.

  • Thanks! I'll check it out!

  • WOW! cant help my self but to listen it again and again and again and again.... Thanks Jack God bless you always...

  • Can anyone tell me how to reach Jack? Will he receive these E-mails? I have a version of the song I'd like to share with him. Maybe he could help me perfect it. Looks like he's playing a Taylor. My version is completed with a Martin and Fender bass. The song is for my wife. I'd love to have Jack help me complete it, if he's willing.

  • Yes, I'm Jack, and you can reach me by e-mail. Message me your e-mail address, and I'll get e-mail you back.

  • great version mate and love the wedding gesture. some beautiful guitar playing

  • Hi Jack

A very nice version of a great John Lennon song. Can you let me know what chords you are using I can see you are capoed at second fret so G becomes A

    Sparky

  • Ive been coming back every now and then for over a year to listen to this. Can u just send me an Mp3 or somethen man? Also send me a chord chart.

    What are the chords?

  • PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a chord chart.

  • this is awesome!

  • Glad to hear you testify! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Wow! I love this song too. It makes me want to cry. You gotta sing for my 10 yr anniversary, but since we just celebrated our 5 it might be a while... LOL!!!

  • Eh, no more than say, five years or so!

  • Thanks that-s a good cover, I could find the chords to play it with my guitar just seeing you, thanks

  • old school

  • You're point being?

  • A great cover. Outstanding.

  • I love this post. Where did you get the music sheet for this? Thanks.

  • I didn't learn it from sheet music. I play mostly by ear.

  • Best way. What are the chords - or what would they be w/o capo?

  • PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you a chord sheet.

  • very nice cover mate.

  • Sir. Can you sing in to my wedding? I just love you perform that song. hope you will revive more john lennons song. (sad to say i'm in philippines. :)but i'll give you 100% WOW for that song...

  • Beautiful voice you have sir!!I was actually searching for John Lennon's version of this song, and came across yours and another man's version(Craig S..)in another related video. Anyways, you 2 sing it wonderfully!

  • nice! but the lyric posted sais "face the setting sun/when the day is done" and i think you said "face the setting sun/we will be as one" it was nice anyway

  • Yeah, you're the first one to catch that. I noticed it a number of months ago, but didn't have the heart to take this one down after all the nice comments I've received. Maybe I'll do a corrected version some day. Nice pick on your part, though, for being the first to notice!

  • =) i wouldn't go as far as taking it down it doesn't ruin the effect of how nice it sounds

  • Good job mate .

  • love it!! best verison I have heard. great song

  • Glad to hear you testify! Thanks for watching!

  • Beautiful cover! Your singing and guitar playing is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Your changed line "What'ver our lot may be" is ugly tho. "Whatever fate decrees" is a million times better. If you change this line, you need to think of a better alternative.

  • this is a beautiful version and yes,John would have been proud if it..thank you for posting it

  • Truly enjoyed your video.

  • Love your performance and style.

My compliments and love from The Netherlands.

  • Damn good solo performance. John would be proud.

  • Folksy touch to a great song. Kudos!

  • i saw hal bruce do this same song, it was better,

    but still good for you.

  • I agree. His was better. Thanks for stopping by.

  • great song. thanks Jack Marti.... well played! great guy...

  • If you play this song at a wedding you should ask the couple if they want that line changed.

It shouldnt be your decision just because YOU dont believe in fate. "Whate'er our lot may be" is such an ugly line. "Whatever fate decrees" is beautiful.

  • Thank you for your advice, but just about anyone whose wedding I'd sing this song at would be in agreement with me concerning the concept of fate. However, if there were ever to be someone who asked me to sing this song at their wedding who preferred the other line, I'd probably decline to sing it, because I couldn't then sing it in "spirit and truth."

  • It has a irish feel to it. Jack Marti sung it in a Irish way. And I think whatever our lot may be line, is great.

  • Must be my celtic influence coming through! I love Irish fold music.

  • good song this one, its nice

  • Thanks! Blessings on you!

  • try to transelate your song in dutch , did the song kelly and no one, from eatmore cookies ,like his songs to ,but I am not as musical as you two,shy to sing but I wil try it, wish there was mor education whit music here in the netherlands,by gitar man, bless you too:D

  • beautiful rendition man! First time I heard the song, very nice...

  • Glad you liked it! Thanks for commenting. I just wish John had lived long enough to appreciate the gem this song really is.

  • It's a sweet song, but it made me cry considering that John and Yoko didn't get to grow old together. As someone said, it would make a great wedding song.

  • I only discovered this song about five years ago. A friend sang it at her husband's cousin's wedding. When I asked her where she got it, she said it was by John Lennon! I almost couldn't believe it in light of his songs "Imagine" and "God." About a year or so later someone asked Laurie and I to sing it for a couple at a Valentine's dinner who were having marital problems. Since then they divorced, but were just re-married about a week ago. They asked us to sing it again at their wedding.

  • Nice! Cozy little song, isn't it?

  • This song is SOOOO sad!! Apparently, it was released a month after John Lennon's death! Yoko had it released! He made it for their anniversary and he made it just for Yoko!

  • Nope. It was released 3 years after Lennon's death as part of the "Milk & Honey" album. It is supposedly the last demo recorded by Lennon.

  • A beautiful rendition of a beautiful song, many thanks

    Stewart K-D

  • A beautiful song, also played and sung beautifully.

  • Again, still one of my favorites. Very warm, comforting and well, simply enjoyable.

  • Hi Guitmartiman. I really like this song and would like to have it performed at my wedding. Do you know where I could find guitar sheet music for it? We will only have the one instrument and I think most of the sheet music for this song is for the piano. Thanks!

  • guitmartiman, I totally believe john had no intention of this being a christian song. he had already turned his back on Jesus long before writing this. But I have no problem with turning it into a song glorifying God's union between husband and wife. Just consider that you've taken something and improved upon it.

  • thank you shanna for the lovely valintines dedication song love you.

  • I just wanted to say that this clip has made me smile (no homo)

  • Glad to hear you testify! Peace be unto thee.

  • great job man, be sure to check out my piano version when i post 2morrow... =)

  • Will do. Thanks.

  • beautiful

  • Very nice voice, very soothing sound, I like the way a solo guitar sound when it is picked like that. Thanks for sending me this video.

  • That was Beautiful! Nice song choice!

  • Thank you. But I think this song chose me. You know how it is. Sometimes you hear a song only once and you know you should sing it. In my opinion, this is one of the best songs John ever wrote, and he never really did a truly finished version of it before he was murdered.

  • Yes, i know what you mean bout the song choosing you. .LOL

  • Wow excellent playing and singing. I'm not much into the Christian music, however this song is great. I wish I knew how to play the guitar!!! Thanks for sending it to me, I'm working on more vids for my acct so keep checking

  • Will do. I'm glad you liked the song. Believe it or not, I'm not really much into today's Christian music either, with a very few exceptions. I'm not sure John meant for this to be a Christian song, but it works for me.

  • Well done :)

  • Thank you. To God be the glory!

  • Really lovely man, well done. Thanks for sending me the heads-up!

I'm looking froward to catching up on more of your past videos.

Have a great weekend, and God bless.

  • You're certainly welcome. Thank you for your kind comment. I hope you find that some of my other videos minister to you as well. Blessings on you.

  • I don't understand how you can believe in God, yet not believe in fate. One of the definitions of "fate" is "a power that predetermines events". Well, isn't God the almighty power that has predetermined every future event?

  • No. I don't believe God is that way at all. Just because He knows the end from the beginning doesn't mean he predetermined that things had to work out the way they did. That's a very common misconception about our Creator. He is very much concerned about the choices we make, but it is our choice nonetheless. He does everything He can to save us, but in the final analysis, it's still our choice. Fate and choice are mutually exclusive.

  • Yes, I guess I didn't look at it that way. You're right. I guess I need to look at my faith a little closer and pray on it. Thanks, bro. :)

  • You're welcome. I think we all need to examine our faith more closely. We are told in Hosea 4:6 that "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..." And it's not because they just didn't have the knowledge, but because they "rejected knowledge." Because people choose to reject the true knowledge of God, He will be forced to reject them, but not because that's what He wants to do or that He predestined that it should be that way.

  • Nice job!!! :) What Lennon album is that from?

  • It was on the Milk & Honey album that came out four years (1984) after his death. It wasn't the best recording, but it's a great song that if he'd lived I'm sure he would have done a much better job on. Mary Chapin Carpenter did a brilliant version of it in the nineties.

  • I like this song also. Nice work. :)

  • Thanks. I really liked your cover of "Blackbird" with your sister. I tried for years (decades really) to get that one right, but it was only when I saw several performances on YouTube that I finally figured it out.

  • Thanks. The beatles were just awesome weren't they? I just figured blackbird out by ear which was tricky and I still haven't got it totally right. Sometimes I wish I would have learned to read a form of music. Everything I do is by memory and feel. The bad thing about that is you can forget stuff. I want to learn a lot more guitar this year.

  • Particularly liked the smooth guitar playing!

  • You made an excellent song even better

  • Thank you. I thought so, but not necessarily because my singing or musicianship was any better or even as good as John's, but because my slight change in the lyric took it out of the hand of "fate," and acknowledged God's sovereignty.

  • John would turn in his grave

  • Very nice!!! I liked it alot!!

  • I thought you might. Blessings on you.

  • If we follow the words of this song, we will spare ourselves of many disolusions and regrets when we really get old and look back at the mistakes we have made, but the clock can not be turned back to change things.

  • I prefer Lennon's version.... of course. But my honest opinion is that- sure you can play it well, but I'm not that keen on you're voice. Sorry to be frank.

  • No problem at all. I prefer that people be frank. Thank you for taking the time to respond. Blessings on you!

  • Aww..that's a nice song. It makes me think of my girlfriend. Now I miss her.. :(. haha.. But I really like it! Your guitar skills are great! I might even try to learn this song too :P.

  • Great playing; voice is comforting, like James Taylor's. Thank you!

  • Thank you, Rachel. Heartfelt it is. My wife, Laurie, and I have been married now for over twenty-eight years. It hasn't always been easy. We're polar opposites in many respects. But we truly have grown in love with each other, and I can't think of anyone else I'd rather grow old with.

  • WOW Thats Was Pretty Good. Good Voice. Nice Well Played Notes

  • Glad to hear you testify! To God be the glory.

  • sweet and intimate, classy and (dare i say this) respectful, you have not dissed dear st.winston o'boogie (which is what i feared when i read that you changed the words). sincerity and grace have won you over...congrats.

  • Thank you. I was sincerely hoping not to cause offense by changing the lyric. I have the utmost respect for John's poetry and songwriting ability. I just don't believe in fate, that's all. So I couldn't sing it honestly with that lyric. I do appreciate your feedback and am glad you liked it.

  • Great Job, keep it up

  • Hi! Very good job! You have a good voice, and your tone range in very good too. :)

  • Beautiful melody, nice version, congrats!

  • This is an excellent version! Thanks for sharing it with me.

  • Very beautiful! One of my favorite poems by Browning. I don't recall Lennon singing this--where was I?? I have to go back & listen to his version.

PS Thanks for the friendship invitation-looking forward to more of your videos. You have good taste!

    5 strz!

  • Jack: You asked me to listen and I did. First of all I know nothing of music or instruments other than what pleases me personally. I very much enjoyed your rendition of this song. I found the simple guitar strokes along with the pace and your voice relaxing and enjoyable. If you are ever in Florida, I could use a few good tunes here on the Lake! Russ

  • Very pretty. Too bad Heather Mills and Paul McCartney won't follow the same logic. Is that a Taylor 410? It's a beauty.

  • My first Taylor was a 410 and it was a beauty. But, no, this is an 810-B (brazilian rosewood). Yes, it really is too bad about Heather and Paul.

  • Thank you for the invitation to view your posts! You have won a new subscriber!

  • Nice song,good work

  • Very beautiful - that is what marriage is supposed to be about - growing old together in love :)

  • Thanks, Clereece. I agree 100%. However, love isn't just an emotion, it's an ongoing choice. In my marriage I've found that sometimes you have to choose to love your mate even when you don't like them at times. Love will prevail if you're proactive about it. You can fall in love, but you don't stay in love unless you learn each other's love language and speak it often.

  • "learn each other's love language and speak it often."

    Now that's good advice!

  • My friend, VERY NICE! Soothing! Thank You!

  • I like the change of words even though I had never heard the song before. You did a great job on this one!

  • I needed to here this song today. Good job! Your lyric rendition was good too.

  • Glad to be of service.

  • "Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be". Beautiful words from the Poet Browning. Well done.
