  • Bob on this !!

  • @regipunk1 so after all these years, you can't have changed much ? Still a dickhead !

  • You can't light a fire, you can't cook or sew...

  • Words are not enough for this song, this group, the music and the songs are just jaw dropping,4ever THE JAM

  • WOW. I found my dad's Jam singles (He has every single one) and was listening through them all. I heard this for the first time, and thought it was AMAZING

    so different to the rest.

  • great great song.

i think the best of this tracks is not the chorus.

  • @doubleredsx3- It's certainly one of them.

  • still on me vespa after all these years, Mr Weller to you who don't know you are listening to the greatest poet of our time

  • @MrDavejardine - still on me scoot to mate...

  • the best B side ever!

  • Weller's lyrics are particularly harsh in this

Great lyricist he was, no room for ambiguity. Just says what he means.

  • Absolute class

  • The Jam, real music listened to by real people.

  • Timeless brilliance. Simple as.

  • paul and bruce. very complimentary. what ever happened that they went seperate ways?

  • An absolute fuckin classic from a legend band. Fuckin Belter.

  • The B side of Strange Town - and quite excellent.

  • Genius:)

  • It makes me physically sick to my stomach that this only has 150,000 views when there are things like Bieber and Derulo getting millions. Physically sick.

  • @TheZeaf Couldn't agree more... On the other hand, fuck views, it's just a meaningless facade.

  • @TheZeaf Physically sick? You may want to get that checked out.

  • and i dont care about morals, because the worlds insane and we're all to blame in a way

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great brilliant awsome i forgot how good this tune is. it's been a long time since i listened to my old vinyl until today and i had to hear this again and again and again!!!!!!!!

  • Paul Weller. genius of a songwriter, and sadly not praised enough for his music ability on the guitar. Modfather!

  • Anybody know what it was about?????

  • @walshy2866 Groupies as far as I know.

  • One of the best ever Jam songs for me:)

  • We need more great bands like this to quell the shit that passes for music in the charts today... great band this.

  • @MrJanesaddiction So you were responsible for woolies going bust then lol.

  • Now in my forties and having worked in the music biz for many years, no one in my humble opinion has come close to what the jam achived in the 5 years they had a polydoor rec contract. And this just happens to be one of thier best!

  • Absolute classic-love it,was the first piece of vinyl i bought back in the day.Should have been the A side and Strangetown the B.

  • Loved this when this first came out, my favourite of all the many, many Jam classics....thank you very, very, very, very much for posting

  • @fulhamrobadob You are very welcome :D

  • Cant understand a wod hes saying

  • My kid hasn't missed out... He gets to listen to anything he wants to hear from the late 1960's through to today's music. That includes The Jam and Paul Weller (excellent musicians). His current favourites are Gorillaz, but he loves Nazareth as well. Most of his class mates don't even get to hear music unless it's on a cartoon TV show :-( We have to look after our music collections for the next generation!

  • Tx Tess x ..

  • @miragin7 hey .. havent seen you here for ages.... how are you :D

  • A know this girl, she once was mine....

  • fucking awesome !

  • put summat on Facebonk bout a chrysalis which reminded me of this EPIC tune!!!! How weird, JAM, you rocked when I was younger and helped me get to school by listening to you every night .............Thanx guys, I'm still here XX

  • Comment removed

  • okay, people of my generation just dont listen to decent music anymore, it makes me sad.. its like 'no thats not music, thats people practically talking with an autotuner' jeez! epic song........

  • fuckin love this song

and this is the best version

paul weller's voice in this just cant be beaten by ANYONE

    it goes so well :P

  • @TheBeck666

I'm sure there must be someone, but hard to think of now lol. Beautiful song and a great singer.

  • favourite jam song..gonna play it at my funeral.

  • such a great song, had good memories from when I was younger, long live Paul Weller!

  • BRILLIANT

  • 1 of the grates tracks of all time along with Tales from the Riverbank

  • Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Garbage, but the Jam's version is WAY better.

  • Paul Weller is a lyrical genius.

  • the song was actually inspired by the book "the collector" by john fowles

  • The Jam are great the garbage version is the complete opposite of what the jam stood for. long live the Modfather bring back the Mods we need it more today than ever !!!

  • I didn't even know Garbage did a cover of this, well maybe I did but just shrugged it off as a pop rip off, like when No Doubt did the Talk Talk cover of It's My Life. I was crushed when the Jam broke up, I thought they were doing some of their best stuff at the time too. Oh well life goes on. I certainly got a lot of great music from the Mod Father to enjoy. Thanks for posting this excellent audio version!

  • somone finly pute this up ,thanks. love this song dearly ..but at the same time i liked it when, it was a hard jam song to find. kinda seperated the old fans from the key boerd peeps

  • what's the instrument they use in the beginning?

  • @ShAdOw116789 Its a guitar with a ton of chorus.

  • Ive said this numerous times but damn... i was born too late : (

  • This song was inspired by the book called "The Collector" by John Fowles.

  • the best band since the beatles

  • my word the garbage,s version is well shit

  • The James best song by miles

  • Brilliant track. Absolutely outstanding

  • this is by far the best song ever written

  • CLASS IN A GLASS.

  • Great fucking video, UK all the way

  • look at the track listing on the sleeve. Does n't get much better in life than that does it?

  • Cracking song...I saw them live in '78 on the 'Modern World' UK tour-incredible energy-it blew my 14 yr old mind...so much power from just the Rickenbacker 301 and 4001 bass...an excellent lesson to a budding young Rock'n'Roller! Thanks to Dave Morgan, who was the promoter at Torquay Town Hall and got me in for free!Aaah-the halcyon days of youth!

  • Thank you. Brilliant underplayed song.

  • awesome still hate the style council though

  • is that Dennis Waterman on drums?

  • Now I dont care about morals, because the worlds insane and we're all to blame in a way......

  • this song reminds me of my step mum the cheating slag!!

  • the first time i heard this track was at brighton the last gig ever, it still sends a shiver down my spine. mick

  • Second rate like your perfume LMFAO...

I've spent a fortune seeing Mr Weller, his lyrics are just so true.

  • Coming up 47yrs had the pleasure of seeing em live on many occasions, this song still sends a shiver down the spine, weller still one of the best song smiths on this planet

  • Totally agree mate, he gave me a great escapist youth, Im coming up for 44 and also saw them many times, his old man John, was a true gent to the fans, letting them into soundchecks and even some hotels. Those were the days.

  • @TwinTotty Great times eh! The Jam, and this song especially, mean as much to me now as when i was gigging with them back then. X.

  • @TwinTotty LOVE THIS SONG,LOVE THE JAM BUT SAW THEM LIVE AT LANCASTER UNI CIRCA '78 and their support group blew them away.......The Vapours

  • fantastic no 1 group no one better

  • Check out my cover of this song if you're interested. Thanks :)

  • The Jam don't get enough recognition. I hardly ever hear their songs on the radio.

  • super sexy song

  • Mods Rule !

  • so what you like about Noel Gallagher but hes a musical genius and he introduced me to this when he played it live in his acoustic sets. fav jam song.

  • This is definately the best track they ever recorded, regardless of chart fame...

  • it's not about Paula Yates, it's about Soo catwoman !!!!

  • Is that true? The Punk girl? Where did you hear that?

  • definatley not about paula yates! where did you get that from!!!!

  • my favourite jam song of all time

  • u fuckin lyrical genious mr weller

  • Got to be the best jam tune I think and hardly anyone has herd of it. great tune

  • 100 years from now and this song we still be remembered

  • this songs about paula yate,s

  • WELLER is GOD..

  • Bought Strange Town 7" when i was 10 years old, and discovered this on th B-side...what a bargain :D

  • im 21 and i know this is quality, but i listen to the beatles, the jam, kinks, stone roses, oasis, i dod listen to hip hop but this only came from the period of rakim, kane, nwa, tupac, biggie, early jay z and early nas, new hip hop is shit

  • sound like what i used to listen to when i waas your age. Give Hermins Hermits, The Zombies, The Yardbirds, 3 Dog Night, Gene Pitney, Stealey Dan, Hollies, The Ivey League, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Monkeys,The Stranglers, Blue Oyster Cult, America, Stevie Wonder, Harold Melvin etc. a try. You'll go off the Beatles soon and then probably go back to them, for the ballards if nothing else

  • TOP NOTCH!

  • In the 80's we had Mods, Rockers, Skinheads, Rude Boys, Punks, New Romantics, Teds, Psychobillys, New wave, Reggae, Hip Hop etc. etc. The chart music and the fashion reflected this, what have the kids of today got !? Manufactured X-Factor / Pop Idol shit and gangsta rap bollocks, - YOU MISSED OUT KIDS !!!!

  • Couldn't agree more. These American "bad boys" with their gold teeth and bling probably don't even like white brits (most definetly..am not racist...just fact) and are thinking as they show off their bling in videos, cheers for buying our gansta crap and making me rich. Everyone looks the same these days

  • nah mate, im 17 and im a mod, i just cant do with the shite of today, so i go with what will allways be fucking awsome

  • @srdsol I was so born in the wrong era haha!

  • @srdsol

    yes, indeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!

  • @srdsol Agreed. At the same time, though, the older generations left us a larger culture that paved the way for such shyte and, as such, bear some responsibility for said shyte. At least there were some attempts to change the larger culture back then, which is more than I can say for my shytty generation.

  • @srdsol Yeah but kids of of today have got their own identity....er no they haven't, but they got Nike trainers. give me me doc martins, staypress trousers along wif yer collection of 1 inch badges . The music and the charts were special and excitin. imagine havin The Jam, the specials PiL The Ramones The Vapours The Clash Soft Cell, JUlian Cope The Banshees, Talkin heads Costello Blondie Blockheads Cure Bahaus Bowie all at the same time. Fuck Me you did miss out

  • @johnnylongback

to right johnny those day when i left school in 79 were pure fucking class

  • @srdsol don't remind us.

  • @srdsol to right on that all the kids got these days is shit rubbish computer games crap music

  • @srdsol i'm wi you mate ! they know fuck all these days! . I grew up wi the jam n thatcher put me out a job , the miners strike, n all the rest o the bullshit !. The music was a release from all the crap we put up with .

  • @srdsol fucking hell,what a brilliant post,hats off to you mate,big time :)

  • @srdsol just like to say mate that I am fifteen and a mod...

    so, yeah.

  • @tom1995w Fucking hell! another one! nice to meet you mate

  • Comment removed

  • @srdsol im a kid, im living in the past, i hate todays music and fashion, much prefer the smart look of mods and the music that actually means something and not just stupid sounds that get repeated.

  • @srdsol I know what you mean mate, i wish i was around in the fucking 80s, modern stuff is fucking pony mate, apart from wellers new stuff

  • @srdsol Too fucking right I've missed out. I can't wait to finish off my time machine.

  • @TheJokesmtih You better fit that time machine with two seats, 'cos i'm going back with ya mate.

  • @jochen538 make it 3

  • @srdsol

    The KIDS are UNITED !

  • @srdsol i fucking hate my generation

  • Class song, Paul Weller is a genius

  • and this was only a B side (to the excellent Strange Town) yet it is so brilliant. The Jam in their pomp and what a group they were.

  • Magic.

  • This song is such a timeless piece of genius... Love it..

  • Here Here!! Boysie.

  • THE WORLDS INSANE

  • how fucking prolific is wellers talent and yet people out there still dont appreciate this greatest tallent england has given birth to,his music has spand through four decades and influenced many, supplied reason and answers to many.

thanks for posting this, one of my alltime favs

    god bless paul!

  • that's cause ppl out there don't lissen to real music like this, they listen to things like lady gaga and sugar babes, and the like

  • I like the Jam and I like Garbage and I am not a little teeny bopper. I prefer the Garbage cover but that is my opinion. I also like this version. If someone wants to "kill me" for having an opinion other then their own, then that's their problem and they have a BIG problem and should get help. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing. Variety is the spice of life. Embrace it and don't get your feelings hurt just because someone doesn't think exactly like you.

  • you just cant get any higher!

  • The songs about girls who would shag someone because they are famous

  • Simply Outstanding!

  • simply a great tune from a band that set the standard.wellerite telford.

  • such an awesum tune intersting reading in the comments ;)

  • im going to kill you

  • Now now... that isnt very nice now.... !!People are entitled to their opinions ... i adore the Jam but i reckon that Liam Gallagher and Steve Craddock done a better version of Carnation.... !!! Phew thank god i cant get thumbed down in my own vid page!!!

  • well perhaps that i can understand, but christ, garbage.... fuckin GARBAGE'S version better? does that not just boil your blood?

  • Garbage are .... well...pretty garbage but i dont want to kill them haha :P

God there is more thumbs down up there for that comment.. last time i was here it was 6 down.... now its 8!!!

  • @tes74 lol agree w/2nd para

  • @tes74 great song from the best band ever!

  • @1991NickC you just probably a little shit .if not i kick the mothers out u\

  • @1991NickC you`re a fool,(dick).

  • @1991NickC fuck off dafty!

  • @tes74 why dont you listen to the oasis and paul weller version of carnation and then comment ..oasis knew they were in presence of an older statesman ...

  • That is a real dumbass thing to say.

  • "...And I dont care about morals -

cause the worlds insane and were all to blame anyway!..."

  • Sounds so cool!

  • its about prostitution

  • No it isn't

  • 'it's just the face on your pillowcase that thrills you'

yes it is. what is it about then?

  • Weller has said that this is about someone who sleeps around and wants not only notches on their bedposts... but also wants the souls and minds of the people that they're sleeping with. They don't care who they are because they're just faces on a pillow. The butterfly collector has no talents, other than between the sheets, but this is starting to wear off... someone that uses the men or stars she's with to get what and where she wants in life... a social climber.

    Thought I'd clear this up!

  • Oh yeah, it's mainly about groupies

  • is that sarcasm?

  • i was close

  • 3 minutes of genius

  • what about the other 28 secconds?

  • i don't hear any sound from 3.05 but its a quality tune regardless

  • That's because the song is over at that point!!!!!!!!!

  • i take it u didnt listen to the last 28 secs?..Lmao HA

  • Title from John Fowles famous novel.

  • its like all music, its about what you want it to be about. i know THE butterfly collector. do you ?

  • The groupie is japanese and by all accounts still follows him around although not sure if anything untoward goes on these days, shed have to be early forties at least

  • Hope She Dies In Her Sleep!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • eh ? the lyric is "And your fashion sense is second rate like your perfume"

  • When you just cant get any higher .......

  • Is all their stuff this good?

  • FUCK YES!!!!!

  • Here here!

  • yes paul weller genius

  • Just Amazin.

    Brilliant.

  • excellent song, the B side of "Strange Town". The A side was great but this is even better.

  • Sometimes i think England is shit, but then i listen to this poetry and it makes me proud.
