The experiment with the phones is a bit off: the girl tells passersby "why" she needs to use the phone. By contrast, the man just asks to use the phone. Researcg suggests that people are more likely to do you a favor is you explain why.

@brokenbulbs Actually is is more likely if you phrase your request a a "command" rather than a "request" so rather than saying "Can I use your phone" which would illicit curiosity and suspicion, you might say "I need to use your phone" which is more of a "command" type sentence structure.

This is all really psych101, but it's cool to see it being carried out. They should have gotten a male who seemed.. without sounding rude here, more intelligent. The woman pronounced her words better and seemed more educated :/ It's all about first impressions, whether that's right or wrong.

That's bull. The female displayed a very clear need to make a call, and was acting the part of someone locked out very well. The guy just wandered around asking to borrow a phone and did NOT give a good reason to need to make a call. SKEWED RESULTS! I'm rating it 1 star for perpetuating a disgusting stereotype in a misleading manner.

Interesting point of view, but isn't some of it down to the different way men and women approach the same situation. Men and women were designed to do things differently, hence stereotype might be more accurate than you think.

There is no "doing things differently" in this case, they both acted out wholey OPPOSITE scenarios (the senario of genuine need VS. the senario of unimportant request). If the man had been acting out the same exact fake scenario, with the same scripting I'm POSITIVE he would have gotten some help. In a science experiment you ALWAYS need to remove as many variables as possible. If you want to note the effect of gender, all other variables must be IDENTICAL, or else the results are faulty.

you're right about them both acting differently, so differently infact it's like 2 seperate experiments. BUT had they been acting similarly the result would still have been that the woman receives more offers of help. and if that hadn't happened it would have been completely against what normally happens. they did another experiment with queue jumping which was better than this one. the woman got away with it far more. women are treated differently unfortunately as it's lead to womens huge egos

The whole point of an experiment is to PROVE something true by removing or controlling as many variables as possible. If you do not do it this way, the data is tainted and it cannot be considered a true experiment. REGARDLESS of what the result will be or if the controlled and uncontrolled version turn out the same it is still ignorant to trust an experiment that has been executed incorrectly. If you do not get the expected result the first time you do it SEVERAL TIMES and study the differences.

you should have took more time to read what i said. 1 - that particular experiment WAS EXTREMELY flawed. (it's pretty unbelievable that THEY would consider that a fair experiment)

2 - the experiment on the other show with the female queue jumper being allowed to do so was fairer AND an accurate representation of the way the sexes are treated differently. 3 - if you can't see the female advantages in daily life for yourself you're not capable of observing accurately. watch?v=sGf-PwJrzXo

You said "sure it's flawed, but the result is correct" without then providing a link to an unflawed example. 2. you didn't provide a link in your other comment 3. I never ONCE stated my opinion on how I feel females are treated in society, you also seem to be getting the OPPOSITE idea of my views (I'm anti-feminist and I also treat men better than I do females).
