@mamatalu The holes are pre-punched, so the needles aren't real sharp, just pointed. The thread is very heavy and strong, and the wraps around his fingers are to prevent the thread from cutting into his fingers as he snugs up each stitch. He does it so fast you don't really see it, but he gives each stitch a hefty tug as he finishes it, and over the course of a day the thread would really cut into your fingers without the tape. Great shoes, too!
