  • it actually sounds like a solo to me

  • Lmaoo i'm from trinidad where steel PAN is from and umm thiss is not "amazing" goo on all stars in panorama finals that iss amazing.

  • I was lucky enough to play in a steel drum band in high school. Loved it. Wish I could afford some tenor & lead pans.

  • Fantastic member of the human race playing pan music. He could play with the best of the best.

  • ...........I don't want to sound racist here, I'm as white as white, and this sounds LIKE a white guy playing the steel drums......just because you can play a musicla instrument, doesn't mean you should......leave it to the black folk mate.

  • @sparhawk1975 So should blacks leave playing classical music to the whites as well?

  • @physphilmusic if they're shit at it then yes......

  • Thats who took my salad bowls....

  • The first time I saw those steel bowls i did te same thing but mine sounded better

  • 0:35 No doubt he's playing random notes

  • Amazing!

  • How does the steel drum produce that sound? I've never understood.

  • Wow thats awesome. Kinda sounds like a piano

  • wow your awesome! keep it up!

  • nice !

  • HEY FOR EVERYBODY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT IS ACTUALLY MUSIC

this is Jason, from the video yeah. I started playing pan again and I have a video coming up soon performing some pan jazz. I'll post it as a response in a few weeks when I get a copy of it.

PS to fellow youtubers...I'm well aware that this video doesn't deserve as many views as it has, but hey - you guys are the ones watching not me! I didn't even put it on here haha.

  • @7thstoryguitarist

    watch?v=jzeH52ddIQk

  • As a drummer, that sounds awful. Sure there are some scales and notes in tehre but that doesn't make it good. That sound is horrible. I showed my mate who plays steal drums this and he was apalled.

  • @kingkut Yes you are a DRUMMER not a Percussionist i dont think your opinion matter's much

  • @Leotheninja No, he's right. The way the drums are made, you could pretty much just hit random notes and come up with this, which is what this guy is doing.

  • Sounds terrible...steel drums are supposed to be soothing and relaxing...not giving me a headache

  • no offence but u are just playing random notes on yur pan even a moron or retard can do something better than that

  • @kallezle13 lol no hes not playing random notes

  • @kallezle13 I bet you have never tried playing steel drums.

  • @CocaineRubish lol yes i have i play all steel pans

  • Sounds like a doorbell on cocaine -

  • @pyrofella Best reaction i read today

  • @pyrofella Fucking lol'd hard.

  • @pyrofella that made the video funny as fuck when i watched it

  • @pyrofella cocaine is a hell of a drug...

  • I laugh at this every time I see the view count. I played this and I didn't intend it to be musically pleasing. I know its just lousy blues scales. Check out my channel for some of my guitar playing!

  • this is another example of a white person trying to be a dark skinned person

  • That sucked and was hard on the ears. How did this video attract so many deaf people to give it that many thumbs up?

  • one of the worst

  • i was expecting to come one here and see a ton a white jokes. how disappointing

  • where's the rhythm and the nice touch?

  • its alright in a couple parts... but the rest is..... i dont know how to say it but, not good... sounds bad is what im trying to say

  • wishing I had those drums so I could play like that

  • wow... that sucks ass

  • at one point it sounds like mario

  • I love listening to the steel drums because it reminds me of our Caribbean cruises that we went on.. I miss it so much. :(

  • preety good. never seen some one play 2 diffrent pans,

  • Where did he learn to play?! I wish I could play like that. I'm a double second player down in VA

  • YEAH MAN HEAVY METAL!!! \m/,

  • @noahcho1991 Ok I have to like this.... and I know Jason, you're shaking your head, probably in your hand, very slowly... going "tsk tsk tsk" but yeah rock on noacho! \m/

  • The title says drum "solo", and that's what it was. If he can play that, he can play anything. It is what it is.

If you see a title that says Ball Room Dancing, you shouldn't leave a vulgar comment because you thought you were going to see Break Dancing. Nice "solo"!

  • this really makes me wonder....why is travis barker famous....

  • man this is pan to run in the direction of your fear and don't care wat the mass says cause they dont play this way they follow keep moving and enjoy the pan

  • Dirty street meth + three steel drums = frantic chocolate pushing performance.

  • trop fort

un possible pour moi pourjouer du second et tenor en meme temps mais il a reussi bravo

  • Not a fan of this type of play. Doesn't mean he isn't talented, just not my style.

  • Soooooo ridiculous. Congrats man

  • My steel drums are heavier sounding...

  • emo

  • @ThrashZone11 you'd better rethink that man, my brother was NEVER emo. he just had fringe for a little while cuz it looked cool. he's solid.

  • wow... 40 dislikes? what is wrong with people these days?

  • Wow. I literally just shat my pants

  • FUCKING EPIC!

  • nice use of blue notes

  • the sounds make u feel calm like your in a beach!

  • boring as hell

  • :) i like

  • the 33 dislike can go to hell :P

  • nice have you ever heard of Jovert?

  • Go to saxyvi channel for some real steel pan music from St. Tthomas.

  • This guy is great!!! =D ROCK ON!!! lol :P

  • Outstanding !

  • seems random

  • Im impressed

  • wow way to go

  • The way he's playing almost reminds me of a saxophone player doing a jazz improv...

  • to me it sorta sounds like he's playing random notes but staying in key. its like he's an amateur just playing fast

  • I like this guy...no disrespect. But the fact that this video has 139 thousand views and freddy harris's videos only several hundred is hiliarious. Search freddy harris people, do yourselves a favor.

  • Awesome!

  • Have you ever heard of Andy Narell? Maybe it's spelled...Andy Narrell A jazz steel pan player...

  • @myhalfof yeah actually i have heard of Andy Narrell....hes amazing! his borhter Jeff Narrell plays pan also....i met both of them at Mannette camp in West VA :)

  • @tenorpan07 west VAgina?

  • totally awesome!

  • this mutha fuckas playing jazz tunes on steel drums! wtfffffff

  • That was an amazing solo. I've been playing Alto (double second) pan for a year an a half, and I'm starting to mess around with arpeggios and stuff. I agree with 'Mattsana' that steel drums are supposed to sound more relaxed, but it would be quite a neat trick to bust out with a solo like that in the middle of a more upbeat calypso piece.

    Neat stuff! =)

  • I think if he was black this would get a five star rating.

  • @ZombehInc

Being black or white or, any other race has nothing to do with the tone that you produce on the steel pan. Whether a person plays slow/fast or piano/forte the tone should be consistent and smooth at all times. A pan player must try to minimalize the amount of notes that "jump out" while playing. Check out these players for some good examples of touch:

    Andy Narell

    Ray Holman

    Robert Greenidge

    Liam Teague

    Victor Provost

    Rudy Smith

  • woah ive never seen anyone actually play a steel drum thats awesome

  • ha ha if u were trinidadian like me it wud be alot easier but still...good job

  • i wish our school wasn't so poor so we could afford a steel pan

  • @LIGHTRONIX You think your school is hard up because of that? My school was still using tri toms long after quads became standard for marching bands. It's been ten years, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're still using the same set.

Made things a bit rough. Most marching band arrangements were written for quad toms, so I always had to adapt. Not to mention all the teasing I endured from other schools' quad tom players.

We also couldn't afford a decent set of bells. Ours sounded like a toy.

  • wow that cool awsome playing man

  • i wouldnt never think when i saw that kid as "oh yeah he plays the steel drums for sure"

  • @sportsman214 so..... you would ALWAYS?

  • omg thats amazing. i played steels drums also and its really hard.

    good job :)

  • ^ Steel drums isnt easy shit brain. I play them myself. Been playing them for 5 years. It takes practice

  • ZOMG this ROcks

  • @danutshmek fuck face

  • YOU RULE DUDE!

  • it sounds more like an electric organ rather than a drum.. cool.... ^^,

  • He is a great player... you need to be more musically inclined...

  • aight, lets see u do it

  • couldn't agree more

  • nah man it sounds great its just the quality that makes it sound irritating

  • damn

    that sounds brilliant

  • wow...

  • Cool solo but uh... stealpans are supposed to sound calm and nice to ya ear... that sounds pretty annoying. Playing fast like that doesnt suit... in my opinion at least.

  • @Mattsana have you played? it's hard to make it "calm", you kinda have to roll everything.

  • @Mattsana They can be fast. You've just only heard calm music. I've heard plenty of fast steel drum music.

  • @MEGAwolfy Yeah well I still dont think it fits. Cause it sounda nnoying to my ears when you play it hard on steel drums, it makes a huge difference imo

  • @Mattsana you are so right. but then this is coming from some one of west indian decent

  • @Mattsana SHAAAAAAAAAAAAADAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

  • @Mattsana if your ear was trained to understand scales and harmony, matt, you could understand what that guy has been playing and it would sound nice to you... try to listen at least some bebop music and train your ear to "understand" it, then you'll find out that what that guy has beenn playing was really nice ;)

  • @alduccio86 I've actually heard from friends that I am very musical but we cannot like everything we hear. No one does. This is just something that sounds annoying to me cause I don't like the tempo at all and stuff.

  • @Mattsana

    its a solo

  • @Mattsana aalthough you are right some can be calm, but a lot of steel pan music is up beat and lively. it sounds great here! but even more exciting and fun with an entire steel drum band

  • @macie1243 He's definitely skilled, no doubt :)

  • @Mattsana ha. you know little. Beat pan. ( fellow pan players know what I mean)

  • @Bryan1659 Did I say I know alot?

  • @Mattsana i think it was the camera that makes it sound annoying

  • Damn! That was nice!

  • no puedo creer que una par de ollas con endiduras suenen tan bien :O

  • holy fuck

  • that takes some skill :P

  • hes playing double pans and a lead pan thats hard!!!

  • Steal drums are an amazing instrument and you are amazing

  • but they are more easy to play than 'steel' drums

  • es un genio!!!!!

  • your great!!

  • ur a faggot dude, why do u post negative shit like that, it isn't even true ur just pissed that u have a small dick.

  • why the height difference? try putting them at the same height it'll give you an easier switch over.

  • sound projection

  • ur gonna project regardless its hard not to but i guess if thats what u want.

  • yeah that was just an issue of the stands I was using...it was the most comfortable way to place them

  • i love these instruments they sound so.....good and comfy =P

  • Fantastic!!!

    Grandma Mary

  • Comment removed

  • maybe a little, but its mostly the way that set of double seconds was crafted, they sound brutal - its hard to get a mellow sound out of them

  • Comment removed

  • Those mallets are smaller than normal. The doubles have mallets about twice the size (with the band), so you have to hit them differently

  • I love this instrument because I am also Jamaican myself nice bud

  • nice!

  • well i would love to learn from someone who can take the piss out of himself every now and again. good on ya jason, you've done well for ya self. keep up the good work. on another note. i'm stingy and really wanna know how to play. could ya teach me. also anyone know of some tips on how to make a steel drum?

  • To make a steal drum to get vast amounts of coal. then you dig up some iron ore from the Antarctica or a rainforest. Then you smelt them together at an extremely high temperature, and finally, you craft the shape with some...stuff..8ahem* while it's still hot. Voilà.

  • ooooorrrrrr, you could find a 15 gallon oil barrel and pound it in with a sledgehammer

  • lol yeah, I was just showin' the long official way, cos it was kinda a stupid question lol XD

  • Actually, the bass drums are made with barrels :3

  • Hey guys (eebooking and friends) Its jason - the one playing in the video, remember me? I think we have a misunderstanding on the intent of this video.

I know exactly what I was playing so no need to point it out and It was meant to be a JOKE (note the goofy faces) - steelpan obviously wasn't intended to be played in that manner.

I've been accepted to study music at Berklee so I dont exactly need your comments to redeem my musical ability.

    love,

    Jason

  • Thank you jason! and also remember this has been what four years ago?! so even if it was "a joke of a solo" its like 10x's better now....ive been trying to tell people that im sure there might be more "amazing" videos out there...but for someone from rinky dink MD thats only played pan one year (at the time of this video) thats pretty impressive i must say :)

  • i think two years ago, I didnt start playing until 06-07 school year...and this was the summer of 07 right?

  • yeah okay that is right...i was thinking you started earlier then that....i was thinking we played longer together then just a year...i mean we have just not in the old mill band....but yes it was 2 years ago...

  • u mean rythm? dumb monkey

  • ? What do you mean by that?

  • Do you mean rHythm? because both of you guys spelled it wrong.

  • @iwonderaboutit Actually, forgive the spelling police, but it is Rhythm.

  • most people need 2 shut dey fucking mouth that solo was good half of de cant do that shit and im from trini where pan was invented keep it up

  • sounded kinda sucky to me

  • ... I play a C tenor... and i'm sorry but yeah you are randomly hitting a lot of notes in quick sucession... But seriously mate... there is no rythem... Steel pans are not about showing off... they are about creating music and feeling good about it!!!

I mean have a little dance and smile and people will love you loads more!!!

  • Following up from my query 2 weeks ago.

'Do you know why you don't have one in the middle closer to you???? Hey!??? Do you??!!!! '

    Answer:

Because you wouldn't be able to see it under your ruddy great hooter!

  • and tenorpan, i love the fact that you obviously have an interest in the steel pan, which is a very distinct instrument...

but by reading your comments, its obvious that you take yourself way too seriously as a steel pan musician...

nothing is "amazing" about this video..its actually laughable to see a tenor and a second being played simultaneously in this manner...

no serious pan musician would take you seriously by watching this video..

  • honestly, this is trash...

you are literally playing nonsensical rubbish...

    here's a challenge for you..

try playing something that actually makes SENSE....

  • that sounds like nothing

  • pretty awesome!

  • i like it nice job man! 5 stars

  • no, they're right. its not amazing. you are good, but your solo lacks thematic material and is kinda "noodly." lots of runs just up and down the blues scale. Better than me, however. keep up the good work.

  • actually it is amazing for his level...this was his first year playing....maybe i should re post something to where he is at now so it can be compared....

  • Dude, that must have taken alot of practice. 5 Stars. Btw, it is AMAZING!

  • Thanks :)

  • Where do people get off using titles like Amazing, Awesome, Brilliant, it's just a video of someone who half knows what they are doing & that's it, there is the problem with youtube

  • Well if there is a problem with youtube, then why do you have an account here? Maybe you should delete yours...idk just a suggestion.....??

  • Or people keep their titles reeaaaallll, if I had titled that vid as that then quite right, should go, delete.

  • Well post a video of you playing a "amazing" steel drum solo and if its better then this maybe ill change the title... but seriously no one told you to watch this, some how it must have caught your eye...Maybe seeing hmmm i dont know...amazing maybe made you watch it...but until you come out with your "amazing steel drum solo" this one is mine....

  • How do infants get on here! Yes it's a good demo, it just isn't god damn amazing, can you get that in your little head! FFS. anyone would think I put something like noah did. I found your 'demonstartion' while looking for that dance track that had steel drums in it, if you know what it is you may be useful after all numbnuts, OMD had a track eons ago with decent steel drums sound in it too, if only I had known the search would bring me to you I would of shot my pc immediately.

  • Do you know why you don't have one in the middle closer to you???? Hey!??? Do you??!!!!

  • MOOOO! just sayin... (and for everyone else reading this who doesn't get the joke, that's positive feedback)
