BBQFanNo1 has got some real anti-posting rights issues in reference to my comments. I'm Bloody Well RIght... I Got A Bloody Right To Say! (Supertramp's "Bloody Well Right")
How many times you waste that lame-ass response? You don't have to raise your low self esteem by cussing at people. Give it up. It doesn't work on me.
There is a list of EVERY show that CHICAGO played between May 1967-August1971. It's part of the LP set for the "Live At Carnegie Hall" series from April 5th-10th 1971. After mid summer of 1970 they NEVER ONCE played a town for more than one night except for the 6 days they played in NYC. You try doing the same job 4-6 days a week (each day in a different city) and do that for 12 months straight.
Then figure that Steve Miller, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Andy Gibb, Olivia Newton John, Uriah Heep, Cold Play, Phish, Alanis Morissette, Run DMC, Coolio, Tupak Shakur, and 100 other acts from each generation do that week in and week out for years at a time.
The road is lonely. The road is very taxing on the mind (if not the body as well). Weather. Mobbed by fans EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. Strange languages.
One of the aspects of "the road" that some people know about that others may not is that, you travel as much as 500 miles each night getting from one stage to the next.
Much of that time is spent on BUSES where you're ability to "get away from it all" is non-existent.
Listen to the song "Scrapbook" by Chicago (niffelhern000 has it here in youtube). Listen to the lyrics after the horn break in the middle of the song. It says a lot.
@nakedfaves chicago? really? dude. or chick.... ITS STEVE F_ING MILLER!! Focus...LES PAUL TAUGHT THE MAN AXE...nothing? ok... enjoy lady googah or who ever
This song gets played all the time on 95.3 in Sydney. It's how I first learned the song. I had never heard the Threshold intro before now though. It's amazing how a classic rock song that you do not hear the DJ announce sends you to google as soon as you can.
Am I the only one that finds Threshold kind of creepy? What is the back story for the intro? I'd really like to know, but I can't find anything about it. o_0
@gooseholla1 Van Halen made a few instrumentals that sound like this one; such as Sunday Afternoon In the Park, Intruder and 1984 which were all instrumental songs performed by Van Halen with synthesizers. I'm guessing that's what Steve Miller used for this song as well.
@19torento I wondered the same thing for years, until I took a flight on a 707, sat about 3/4's of the way back, was resting closing my eyes as the plane took off...shortly after take off, I heard the EXACT sounds that Threshold makes...EXACTLY! I think you need to sit between the engines in order to hear it because I never heard on any previous flight. If you don't believe me, try it on a 707...never heard it on any other plane and that is the plane they sing about.
@LSA2013 i feel it's so much better when you hear it with threshold, but i have a version with and without it on my itunes for when i just wanna hear that guitar lick haha
@zeta9009 It is the sound of the engines of a 707 just after take off...blew my mind the first time I heard it, but you need to sit between the engines and it is shortly after take off. No joke.
the actual lyrics are "Touchin' down in New England town
Feel the heat comin' down
I've got to keep on keepin' on
You know the big wheel keeps a spinnin' around
And I'm goin' with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don't want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin' down in the city" idk if he only says shit in certain versions but i have the greatest hits cd(different than the original LP/cassette) and he says shit in my version.
Without this Threshold "intro', Jet Airliner just isn't quite right. It's the perfect 1 minute synth piece. Great post. Most people don't include this essential part of the Album when posting the main song. To me there's a big difference when it's not there. It's like listening to Strawberry Fields Forever without the "cranberry sauce" ending..Thanks to Burythneedle.

@19torento Miller found out that if you did separate tracks, no matter how long, you got paid for it. Just random money making perhaps?

@popcornbilly Well, I'm not going to go on a plane just to listen to its engines, but that's an interesting explanation. Thanks for the info. ^_^

Many AOR stations play these 2 together. Steve and the band hit #8 in Billboard, 7-9-77. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
