you guys are talking like theres more than one ending? this is the only ending...the point where nagisa and ushio died still happened but they were kind of resurrected by tomoya's wish with them living peacefully , altough if u mean the movie's ending then yeah...thats a fucked up movie --.--
No matter how much I love this preferable ending, I feel that the original route *Spoiler* with Tomoyo losing everyone would have a much more impact. Not everything in life is all happy and wonderful. The intended route would show more of the dark (and perhaps more realistic) outcome of the things. Either way, Clannad After Story is still amazing. Something that can match that IMO is 5 Centimeters Per Second. If you love Clannad, you'll love 5 Centimeters Per Second.
@animeloverforlife177 nagisa did die , but after tomoya collected the orbs of light he was granted a wish and so they relived it from where nagisa was delivering ushio and this time , they both survived leading to tomoyo and nagisa raising their daughter peacefully..its kind of a supernatural thing but im glad it wasnt a sad ending.
the true ending (this one) in the Visual novel is when the protagonist (Tomoya) collects all the orbs of light; the light orb itself appears a few times in the anime.
i like this anime as it has a sad ending but in more of a realisation of what could have been if the hope trapped didn't return XD all you need is hope lol

this is one of the best anime's i have ever seen and if you have not seen this then go and watch it because it is amazing - it has some of every genre you can think of pretty much and makes you connected to the characters, most importantly the main characters

@AnoHeartedBeing As soon as Ushio died, Tomoya got his last good deed light for being a good dad to her in the end. And then that triggered his wish for Nagisa to live through the birth of Ushio. Then they lived happily ever after. The End.
However if you are watching the ending prrbabrly you already finished it, but just in case =]
So basically everything happened, they both died, but in the ending had more of a karma concept because Tomoyo(Excuse me if I got it wrong, Haven't watched Clannad in a while) did a lot of good deeds and the town granted him a wish that everything would go fine and they would both live.
@IdkaCoolusername Actually he just wished for Nagisa to be fine during the birth. If you look back in one of the episodes, Sanai said that Ushio would be just fine during the birth whether Nagisa would live or not. Sry, I had go Clannad Nerd and correct you, it was bugging me.
@IdkaCoolusername I dont think it had to do with the good deeds Tomoya did (Tomoyo was the girl) If you listened closely to the episode where Tomoya tries to help Yukine with the gang situation, she explains to him in the end that there is an old legend about orbs of light that appear in the sky when people have achieved true happiness. She said that they have the ability to grant wishes, but people rarely see them anymore so nobody believes it.
@Ecko9i6 In the end when the gangs come together and realize that the fighting needs to stop, Yukine finally achieves true happiness and the orb hovers over the sky as Tomoya watches it fly away. Near the end of the After Story, Tomoya finally achieves true happiness along with his dad when he realizes that his father sacrificed everything for him and the blue orb enters Tomoya's heart after he has apologized and Ushio notices it, but Tomoya does not. At least that's what I think.
@IdkaCoolusername he collected those glowing balls to gain a miracle. for each good thing he does to a person in the town, he gets a glowing ball. therefore, he got a miracle to happen.
after watching this so many times, i dont really get sad much anymore, about what happens earlier, instead i feel content and happy in a solemn way(if that makes sense)
For me, four feelings arise when watching an anime: breathlessness from the emotion being shown (whether it be comedic or tragic); speechlessness from any epic scenes or fights; and emptiness from the absolute boredome when i watch a bad anime. In the case of this video... Or rather all of the endings, the first one never seems to disappear, and the third one never rears its ugly head. Truly amazing.

@urbanaaron56 Not his mind his soul, when they died Ushio and Tomoya's soul was revived in the Illusionary world but in his case only happened due to ushio's loneliness in that world.
I can see from your explanation that you think it was a dream and in way it is but in actuality he travelled through time with nagisa when the robot from the Illusionary world finally note the end of their journey. Tomoya then awaken to see a miracle.

Nagisa's father Akio begged the tree the same tree that ushio was found in the last episode by fuko to save nagisa's life - wanting to do this the girl in the illusionary world and the robot sought to collect light orbs which has the power to grant a miracle..That miracle save them
I have watched a lot of animes, all the way from Naruto to Lucky Star, over 20 animes... but this is still my favorite that touched me the most, it's just... even that cat has a touching back story!
SO MANY MANLY TEARS. Good god i'm going to have to watching this series years from now after forgetting about it. I'm usually not a Romance or Soap Opera guy, but damn this series is just amazing and sad. I almost cried, almost.
Yea this ending fits so much better...No tears would have been shed if they did this at first... But know have everyone weeping and hoping for a happier ending then....BAM alternate ending..

As Kotomi once explained, there were others dimensions besides the one they all lived in. Ushio, as teenager, lived in another world alone. But her father´s feelings for her were so strong that he managed to reach her there as a robot. When Ushio declared she "was" the town, we see that Tomoya was the person who loved Ushio the most in that strange world. Therefore, he was the one who loved the town the most as well. And the town, in return, gave him a second chance to be happy
Anime is far better than American cartoon entertainment because 95% of the time it is actually about something and not just mindles goo that will spoil a young brain. I mean America used to have good cartoons, but Im afraid thats pretty much over now.
@FreedomByMe Dango Daikazoku is the one they sing to the baby at the beginning. Chiisana Tenohira is the one later which sounds similar to Dango Daikazoku.

@XxXxchocobananaxXxX Those miraculous blue lights that they spoke of in the anime that can bring a miracle whenever there is alot of them gathered in one place...those are the lights that Nagisa sees when she tells Tomoya to look..so basically those lights gave Tomoya a miracle by taking him back to the most painful point of his life & changed the outcome so that he would be happy instead of sad.

@dropdeadprincess100 Yes, they all look exactly the same lol..the only one it took me a while to find out was Mei..Youhei's (Tsunahara's) little sister 3:17 because they only show her for about 1 second then go to Tomoyo on the beach...I love Kotomi & Tomoyo

The anime has been my one and only exposure to this story. But that was what i thought when i watched it. he was going nuts about her condition during the pregnancy and "lost it" when it came rushing in. But it all came back when he ACTUALLY heard Ushio's cry. Just how i interpreted it. i could be wrong but i like it.

Also the funny thing is I completely watch this show randomly by chance. I was in class during our exams and finished early with an hour to kill. We all have iPads since our high school is technical and I wanted to watch something on YouTube. I was wondering what to watch and I always heard about clannad. I watched episode 1 and was instantly hooked I now finished and in a way this anime changed me(corny I kno). I'm really glad to have been able to watch an amazing series like this.
That is not how i remember it at all. Just before Nagisa gives birth to Ushio, Tomoya is in utter despair, thinking his very worst fears: Nagisa dies from childbirth and Ushio inherits her illness. It starts playing out in his mind when it shows Tomoya as black and white. It's all in his head, playing out! When Ushio dies, that's as far as he ever got. Her "IRL" cry is what brought him back to reality where Nagisa survives child birth and his fears immediately subside. Absolutely brilliant.
@knightslugger You misunderstood something, all the events in after story really happened, nagisa and ushio is dead, but remember those light orbs and the illusionary world that appear during both seasons? Each time a person is truly happy, a light orb will appear, and if you collect enough light orbs, a miracle can be performed. Tomoya had collected enough already so he deserved a second chance. Right before tomoya wakes up, the light orbs gathered together in places where they appeared
Clannad needs a third season to truly wrap up all of the characters. My main complaint about AS is that it really ignored the other side characters we knew and loved
The "real" ending doesn't feel as real as both Ushio and Nagisa's deaths were. And no matter how much I want to believe his wish happened I still feel as though it didn't.
@Mauldermania This was not 'fan-made' It is actual show material in one episode. But you have to see the whole ending and understand the story and timeline (RL and Alternate) so you can understand why they showed this ending as well. It is complex but worth it. And yes, Clannad: School Years and After Story are all in a class by itself.

I can see from your explanation that you think it was a dream and in way it is but in actuality he travelled through time with nagisa when the robot from the Illusionary world finally note the end of their journey. Tomoya then awaken to see a miracle.

@tonylaf123 Yes he did, but if you watch the series you will know there are fragments of magic in this anime and the dream tomoya has of the "illusionary world" and the girl and the robot was actually ushio and him.
Nagisa's father Akio begged the tree the same tree that ushio was found in the last episode by fuko to save nagisa's life - wanting to do this the girl in the illusionary world and the robot sought to collect light orbs which has the power to grant a miracle..That miracle save them

As Kotomi once explained, there were others dimensions besides the one they all lived in. Ushio, as teenager, lived in another world alone. But her father´s feelings for her were so strong that he managed to reach her there as a robot. When Ushio declared she "was" the town, we see that Tomoya was the person who loved Ushio the most in that strange world. Therefore, he was the one who loved the town the most as well. And the town, in return, gave him a second chance to be happy

Anime is far better than American cartoon entertainment because 95% of the time it is actually about something and not just mindles goo that will spoil a young brain. I mean America used to have good cartoons, but Im afraid thats pretty much over now.

@XxXxchocobananaxXxX Those miraculous blue lights that they spoke of in the anime that can bring a miracle whenever there is alot of them gathered in one place...those are the lights that Nagisa sees when she tells Tomoya to look..so basically those lights gave Tomoya a miracle by taking him back to the most painful point of his life & changed the outcome so that he would be happy instead of sad.

@zzzCruelFatezzz I like my version better (LOL), makes a tad more sense in my head. although i'm not doubting what you say is truth. I've not played the game nor read the VN. The anime has been my one and only exposure to this story. But that was what i thought when i watched it. he was going nuts about her condition during the pregnancy and "lost it" when it came rushing in. But it all came back when he ACTUALLY heard Ushio's cry. Just how i interpreted it. i could be wrong but i like it.

Also the funny thing is I completely watch this show randomly by chance. I was in class during our exams and finished early with an hour to kill. We all have iPads since our high school is technical and I wanted to watch something on YouTube. I was wondering what to watch and I always heard about clannad. I watched episode 1 and was instantly hooked I now finished and in a way this anime changed me(corny I kno). I'm really glad to have been able to watch an amazing series like this.

That is not how i remember it at all. Just before Nagisa gives birth to Ushio, Tomoya is in utter despair, thinking his very worst fears: Nagisa dies from childbirth and Ushio inherits her illness. It starts playing out in his mind when it shows Tomoya as black and white. It's all in his head, playing out! When Ushio dies, that's as far as he ever got. Her "IRL" cry is what brought him back to reality where Nagisa survives child birth and his fears immediately subside. Absolutely brilliant.

@knightslugger You misunderstood something, all the events in after story really happened, nagisa and ushio is dead, but remember those light orbs and the illusionary world that appear during both seasons? Each time a person is truly happy, a light orb will appear, and if you collect enough light orbs, a miracle can be performed. Tomoya had collected enough already so he deserved a second chance. Right before tomoya wakes up, the light orbs gathered together in places where they appeared

The "real" ending doesn't feel as real as both Ushio and Nagisa's deaths were. And no matter how much I want to believe his wish happened I still feel as though it didn't.

What really happened is much more complex than a wish from tomoya..
But Nagisa and Ushio do end up surviving, just in a different timeline..

@Mauldermania This was not 'fan-made' It is actual show material in one episode. But you have to see the whole ending and understand the story and timeline (RL and Alternate) so you can understand why they showed this ending as well. It is complex but worth it. And yes, Clannad: School Years and After Story are all in a class by itself.
