I'll admit that I associated MT with high school jazz choir--recording mostly pop tunes rather than established jazz tunes, but this is totally original (okay, the lyrics were already written) and super-hip.
I have this song by MT on an old VHS from the Newport Jazz Festival ( now JVC ) from 1994 - that just plain kicks ass - because it is with a live band - slightly slower - and they do an extended "scat" / improv at the end imitating different instruments etc.. double/stand up bass, etc.. It is killer. I will try to convert to digital and upload soon.
Would LOVE to see MT at the 1994 NJF singing Jeanine! One of my fav MT tunes. Cheryl Bentyne is so incredible way up on top!!! BTW... a recorded live version which damn AMAZING (and different from the video here) can be found on their "Bop Doo Wopp" and "Man-Tora Live" CDs.
I saw this on public TV in Chicago back in 1981 and have been dying to hear this again---don't know why they didn't put it on an album--they finally did, but not this particular exciting version! I'd kill for the printed version of this!

Holy shit! Group scat improvisation! And to such a cool song--Duke Pearson's Jeannine. Anybody know what the first recording of this was?

Love it! Outstanding -- Manhattan Transfer gets busy, as usual, and and one of my favorite bebop tunes.

This is a great tune. You don't hear it covered very often for some reason.
