okay. i was just watching this on channel 4. and it started to make me sick/glad?.. i think its a good idea to stop fish from haveing to be put back in the sea DEAD!. but at the same time. i want them back in the sea ALIVE!. i love fish. i dont understand why people even have to eat fish when theres so many other things people could eat.. makes me sick.. :/ the whole human race needs to take a look at it self.. stope ating the animals and fish of our world.. cuz one day. tere will be none left.
I hear that more fish can now be landed but less time will be allowed at sea. (BBC /news/uk-16230086) This makes sense to me. There must be compromise. The problem now is that fishermen may lose jobs or have a reduced income. Well, guess what. All this greed and the need to consume so much (in general) in order to create jobs and maintain ecomomic growth is ultimately bad for the environment and us.
I agree with this being madness, but one big problem here is that now they have partially stopped this waste as I understand, we have created a problem for creatures such as birds, whales,porpoises,and dolphins becoming reliant on this waste.Now that has gone they are drifting in land to find it, and beaching themselves. Attempts to re-float them often do not succeed. so are we meddling too much again here? Oh oh humanity you just won't leave be and take just a little of the oceans bounties.
Make fishermen keep all their catch, limit total tonnage of catch, or catch seasons, no more 'by-catch', no more 'discards', no more 'targeted spices'. Control imports, so that the protection of Atlantic cod does not mean the devastation of the Pacific cod. The sea is not a crop we manage, we can only manage the selective harvesting and marketing. Let's start changing our eating habits, save the fish, save the fishermen, save ourselves.

If the by-catch exceeds a certain point the gear needs to be changed or the primary fisheries needs to be shut down. No one should waste fish like this.
Why not just catch less fish in the first place? We don't need to consume more. I don't notice a shortage of fish in the shops. The fish are not exactly wasted anyway. Their bodies decompose and other organisms feed on the remains.

It's not quite as simple as that. The EU quotas are put there to stop overfishing, by putting a limit to the amount of fish they can bring back to shore. Granted, it's obviously failed because acts like this are happening. But if fishermen were allowed to keep *all* of their catch, overfishing would be an even bigger problem, and fish stocks would be disappearing even faster. So this isn't a 'mindless stupid idea,' EU laws just need to be revised.

This kind of fishing is simply not sustainable. The solution is not to stop fishermen from throwing hundreds of fish over the side (they would do this anyway, it's called 'high-grading'; they trawl more fish than they can take back to shore, and chuck out the low value ones) but to stop them from trawling altogether in places where the waters are not 'clean' - full of one type of fish only. He's right that we should broaden our fish tastes though.
This situation shows what a corrupt and perverse society we live in. This has been going on for years and successive ministers have done nothing. Our fisheries minister is not able to tell one common fish from another!! That is corruption,we should wake up and demand answers. I am in the fish trade and have for a number of years only bought Icelandic fish. Their fisheries are well and honestly run. It is simple, what ever is caught comes off quoata. Well done Hugh.

Having shore fished all my adult life, I have certainly noticed the decline in fish stocks on our coasts. I dont think it is right that the fishermen claim there seas are bountyfull. The quota system is there to preserve stocks but it has no effect as the fish are still caught and killed even if not kept, so whats the point, even a child could see thats a stupid method. Do the sums same fish die as if there was no quota, so how is that preserving fish stocks? Come on MEPs stop thi nonsense now

Unfortunatley Guds, this is not the case. The only species to really benefit from this is the bottom feeding creature like crabs, which is why there is now a boom in the crab population in our seas. Add the fact that there are less fish like cod to eat the crab and the problem is even worse. The eco cycle is very complicated. The fish fight is only highlighting the main cause of the problem.

I wouldn't really blame the MEPs either... they probably have sat down for a considerable amount of time taking account of the various options available to them for rejuvenating our dwindling fish stocks. It's just unfortunate that all solutions also seem to come with an adverse effect.

I have a question...who is actually at fault here? Obviously the numbers of fish allowed to be caught has to be restricted - or stocks would run out - and as already proved countless times, man would fish to extinction. So the EU set quotas. Then the question has to be - if the fishermen hate throwing the dead fish back so - why do they carry on fishing when they have reached the quota? Is this the EU or is it fishermans greed?

Unfortunately in waters which are rich in fish whos quotas have been reached, all these fish will be thrown back. How can they be greedy by throwing back all those fish?

Unfortunately fishing quotas are a necessary evil to protect fish stocks, I would suggest huge no fish zones as an alternative, but these are hard and very expensive to implement and police. Fishing quotas have been shown to increase fish stocks, and if they were not in place, the north sea cod would have turned out like the wipe out seen in Canada. The only time quotas have not shown to improve fish stocks have been when they were not followed by all parties or with migratory species.

@OneNoobGamer This doesn't work, it has been tried, and it was found that landing all boats over an ever-shorter interval led to glut/shortage market cycles with prices crashing when the boats came in. A secondary consequence was that boats had to go out when the fishery was "open" regardless of weather or other safety concerns. We just have to eat less fish, omega 3 can be stored as fat, and as a result people can get all the omega 3 they need eating oily fish just a few times a year

2012 will allow us as an industry and nation, to arrive at a multilateral policy which protects fish mortality at the same time, permissioning fishermen to land fish caught. Wd must land what is caught and protect fish stocks for the future, that's the important issue!

Thanks FreedomGlitter 4 share. It's DISGUSTING to kill fish for nothing, unless they are caught already DEAD? It reminds me of the birds, in thousands, who fall onto the ground, no one seems to know why... chemtrails imo.
Regulations: once fish are caught, most die, obviously, but many can't be sold for food, too small / too little -or the 'protected' species (WHAT IRONY!).. conclusion: they still die... what a crazy world, we will die of regulations, of stupidity, ignorance and compliance!

Everybody please! Many species of fish are being overfished to the point where their numbers will become unsustainable! This effect is doubled by the fact that half the fish being caught are being thrown away! This is something you should really care about!

its a sham ban all net fishing. Line caught substainiable fishing is more ECO friendly and fair to us our children and future genarations to come, im a keen angler myself and any fish i kill i eat i wonder what would happen to me if i was standing on my local beach after all the fish i had caught what ever size only to kill and thrown them back would i be prosecuted

This discard madness has to stop, how can it be right to throw fish you have caught back into the sea.....dead. The EU tell the fishermen what size nets they are allowed to use and what particular fish they are allowed to catch ! Any other fish caught in the net has to be thrown back into the sea....dead. There is no easy solution to the problem of over fishing certain stocks of fish, but discard is obscene.

@74Charm If they have a quota for one type of fish it is inevitable that they will catch other fish as they can't put a sign up saying NO COD for example and therefore the fish they catch that they don't have a quota for has to be thrown back

This kind of fishing is simply not sustainable. The solution is not to stop fishermen from throwing hundreds of fish over the side (they would do this anyway, it's called 'high-grading'; they trawl more fish than they can take back to shore, and chuck out the low value ones) but to stop them from trawling altogether in places where the waters are not 'clean' - full of one type of fish only. He's right that we should broaden our fish tastes though.

This situation shows what a corrupt and perverse society we live in. This has been going on for years and successive ministers have done nothing. Our fisheries minister is not able to tell one common fish from another!! That is corruption,we should wake up and demand answers. I am in the fish trade and have for a number of years only bought Icelandic fish. Their fisheries are well and honestly run. It is simple, what ever is caught comes off quoata. Well done Hugh.

Having shore fished all my adult life, I have certainly noticed the decline in fish stocks on our coasts. I dont think it is right that the fishermen claim there seas are bountyfull. The quota system is there to preserve stocks but it has no effect as the fish are still caught and killed even if not kept, so whats the point, even a child could see thats a stupid method. Do the sums same fish die as if there was no quota, so how is that preserving fish stocks? Come on MEPs stop thi nonsense now

Unfortunatley Guds, this is not the case. The only species to really benefit from this is the bottom feeding creature like crabs, which is why there is now a boom in the crab population in our seas. Add the fact that there are less fish like cod to eat the crab and the problem is even worse. The eco cycle is very complicated. The fish fight is only highlighting the main cause of the problem.

@Guds777 That's not how it works mate, The dead fish sink to the bottom and get eaten by crabs, which is why we have a crab population boom in our sea's. Most of those crabs aren't edible so, it's a complete waste. killing adult fish like this will never produce more fish. I wouldn't really blame the MEPs either... they probably have sat down for a considerable amount of time taking account of the various options available to them for rejuvenating our dwindling fish stocks. It's just unfortunate that all solutions also seem to come with an adverse effect.

Fish are better wasted at sea where they will be eaten by other creatures rather than being brought back to shore and wasted by humans. dead or alive these fish will be eaten by other marine life in there own environment , us bring tons of edible fish back will destroy the delicate marine food chain and result in more serious issues, start using your brains people and actually think about this one.

I have a question...who is actually at fault here? Obviously the numbers of fish allowed to be caught has to be restricted - or stocks would run out - and as already proved countless times, man would fish to extinction. So the EU set quotas. Then the question has to be - if the fishermen hate throwing the dead fish back so - why do they carry on fishing when they have reached the quota? Is this the EU or is it fishermans greed?

@Pointraiser1 because the quotas only apply to certain fish, so they carry throwing out their nets to catch the other fish they are still allowed to catch. Unfortunately in waters which are rich in fish whos quotas have been reached, all these fish will be thrown back. How can they be greedy by throwing back all those fish?
The EU quota should be changed to allow fishermen to bring back what they catch within a certain time frame. Watch "Hugh's Fish Fight" on Channel 4

Unfortunately fishing quotas are a necessary evil to protect fish stocks, I would suggest huge no fish zones as an alternative, but these are hard and very expensive to implement and police. Fishing quotas have been shown to increase fish stocks, and if they were not in place, the north sea cod would have turned out like the wipe out seen in Canada. The only time quotas have not shown to improve fish stocks have been when they were not followed by all parties or with migratory species.

@OneNoobGamer This doesn't work, it has been tried, and it was found that landing all boats over an ever-shorter interval led to glut/shortage market cycles with prices crashing when the boats came in. A secondary consequence was that boats had to go out when the fishery was "open" regardless of weather or other safety concerns. We just have to eat less fish, omega 3 can be stored as fat, and as a result people can get all the omega 3 they need eating oily fish just a few times a year

As a fish merchant with over thirty years experience in the trade and, having operated two boats during part of this timew, we have to arrive at an operable policy that protects "fish lives" not "fish landed".
2012 will allow us as an industry and nation, to arrive at a multilateral policy which protects fish mortality at the same time, permissioning fishermen to land fish caught. Wd must land what is caught and protect fish stocks for the future, that's the important issue!

they can't simply just catch half because they can't magically make the correct percentage of species swim into their nets like the idiot EU Nazis expect them to.
And if they don't hit anywhere near the allowed "quota" for each specie, then it wouldn't be worth them heading out to sea.. hence the waste of the 'wrong specie'.
