WOLVES, just like COUGER, BLACK BEAR, and human hunters, must be regulated by the depatment of fish and game in order to maintain a healthy equilibrium. The large predators have the most impact on environmental balance. This was shown when wolves (it's a coincidence that the examples portrays wolves) were killed from a certain area and the deer population exploded, eating young trees to the root. Because of that animals dependant on the trees started disappearing and then the species dependant on those left etc. A test area was made with a fence that kept the deer out and the trees started growing there and almost all the lost species returned.
We drive other animals into a courner and then blame them, call them pests.I know it's harsh for people who loose something in the jaws of wild predators but in the end we don't loose that much. There are ways of protecting homes from them and to keep them away. Unfortunately sometimes they have no other choice than to seek room and food from human territory. We have had wolves and bears very close to our home but we in the countryside didn't freak out. the people in the town did though. Weird..

They killed a whooping 32 wolves. Second the grey wolf they introduced was never native to this area. They are much larger being able to prey on larger animals. It took 8 of them 3 days to kill him. When I first came across them they had him hamstringed so he could not run from them. On the third day he was still alive his nose was eaten of and his belly was torn open and they were eating his flanks as well as his back end. HE WAS STILL ALIVE!!! WEAK???
Yes I do have a clue about wolves because I live in Georgia where there are wolves and I grew up with them. But they do try to pick the weaker animal out of the group. Like I said they hunt in groups, it their nature they are social animal, like us.
wolfsibhusky, my bad I should go back and proof read but, I don't. The wolves you refer to in Ga. we call coyotes. We shoot coyotes year around and yet there are still plenty every year. Last year I trapped and shot 126 coyotes myself. I don't think anyone is wanting them completely gone just to return to a number that can support them so they do not have to resort to domestic stock as a meal.

Wolfsibhusky, I have 1500 cows that most have baby calves and about 100 head of horses. I think I can tell the difference. As far as my understanding of wolves and coyotes I have plenty. I shot 37 coyotes last winter and trapped another 96. I see wolves at least once every 8 to 9 days. The biggest difference I see between wolves and coyotes is wolves will kill for fun. Two years ago I was riding the high country and came across an elk calving ground where I counted 35 elk calves left to rot.

My friend was standing just standing next colt and the mother run after her, bites her arm, and started to bleed. 35 elk calves I think you must be mistaken if you think they were killed by wolves. Wolves kill for food not for fun. While I am not saying wolves don't play, if they kill something they eat it. It takes allot of energy to chase down and kill prey. Also if there were 35 dead animals left to rot I would think human not animal, wild animals don't let food waste it is poor survival. Also ever here of Wolf Trust if your colt was really killed by wolves you can be compensated.

my ranch has been in my family for 110 years. My great grandfather poisoned two wolves in the early 1900's. From then until just a couple of years ago there has not been a confirmed sighting on my ranch. In 2 years I figure the wolves have cost me about 35,000. I have ranched for 35 yrs before they introduced the wolf and I lived just fine without them. I recon it wouldn't be any skin off my hide to live without them agian.

Also it was hunters who are responsible for the restoration of the elk and deer heards. Hunters also are responsible for paying the state agencies (Game and Fish) to manage the wildlife and keep them in managable numbers. how did all the other animals in yellow stone ever survive with out wolves? The Yellow Stone elk heard is all but athing of the past. From 22,000 in 1995 to less than 9,000 now with the average age being 5 yrs. A calf elk has less than a 1% chance of living to see 1 yr. Wolves are very effective hunters they don't just kill the week. I watched a pack of five wolves kill a healthy mature bull elk in Jan. They started out by hamstringing him and after tearing his face off killed him. Took 3 days
Shooting wolves is so much fun. I just started hunting them lastyear and i killed so many that now i've got five of my friends who hunt them now as well. They in turn have some friends who hunt them now. I won last years contest with 36 confirmed kills! Next year i'm gonna set traps so they cant run.

Last year, 700 cattle and 500 sheep were slaughtered by wolves in Wyoming alone. (estimates, U.S. department of Agriculture) Thats just about 1/2 million dollars in losses alone, much less the stress and saveragy the wolves do to the animals. I think the reason that ppl feel the way they do is when the proposal for the introduction was for x ammount of wolves and now they are more the 3x that number. They have run all the elk out of yellowstone and are in areas where ranchers raise sheep and cattle. The problem with this is that preditors will kill what is easiest which happpens to be domestic animals.

The large predators have the most impact on environmental balance. This was shown when wolves (it's a coincidence that the examples portrays wolves) were killed from a certain area and the deer population exploded, eating young trees to the root. Because of that animals dependant on the trees started disappearing and then the species dependant on those left etc. A test area was made with a fence that kept the deer out and the trees started growing there and almost all the lost species returned.

We drive other animals into a courner and then blame them, call them pests.I know it's harsh for people who loose something in the jaws of wild predators but in the end we don't loose that much. There are ways of protecting homes from them and to keep them away. Unfortunately sometimes they have no other choice than to seek room and food from human territory. We have had wolves and bears very close to our home but we in the countryside didn't freak out. the people in the town did though. Weird..

I have seen 7 wolves take 3 days to kill an elk. I would love to have 200 wolves too. To bad there is over 2,000 but, I have faith in the G &F that they will get it to that number. They killed a whooping 32 wolves. Second the grey wolf they introduced was never native to this area. They are much larger being able to prey on larger animals. It took 8 of them 3 days to kill him. When I first came across them they had him hamstringed so he could not run from them. On the third day he was still alive his nose was eaten of and his belly was torn open and they were eating his flanks as well as his back end. HE WAS STILL ALIVE!!! WEAK???

wolfsibhusky, my bad I should go back and proof read but, I don't. The wolves you refer to in Ga. we call coyotes. We shoot coyotes year around and yet there are still plenty every year. Last year I trapped and shot 126 coyotes myself. I don't think anyone is wanting them completely gone just to return to a number that can support them so they do not have to resort to domestic stock as a meal.

Wolfsibhusky, I have 1500 cows that most have baby calves and about 100 head of horses. I think I can tell the difference. As far as my understanding of wolves and coyotes I have plenty. I shot 37 coyotes last winter and trapped another 96. I see wolves at least once every 8 to 9 days. The biggest difference I see between wolves and coyotes is wolves will kill for fun. Two years ago I was riding the high country and came across an elk calving ground where I counted 35 elk calves left to rot.

35 elk calves I think you must be mistaken if you think they were killed by wolves. Wolves kill for food not for fun. While I am not saying wolves don't play, if they kill something they eat it. It takes allot of energy to chase down and kill prey. Also if there were 35 dead animals left to rot I would think human not animal, wild animals don't let food waste it is poor survival. my ranch has been in my family for 110 years. My great grandfather poisoned two wolves in the early 1900's. From then until just a couple of years ago there has not been a confirmed sighting on my ranch. In 2 years I figure the wolves have cost me about 35,000. I have ranched for 35 yrs before they introduced the wolf and I lived just fine without them. I recon it wouldn't be any skin off my hide to live without them agian.

Also it was hunters who are responsible for the restoration of the elk and deer heards. Hunters also are responsible for paying the state agencies (Game and Fish) to manage the wildlife and keep them in managable numbers. Shooting wolves is so much fun. I just started hunting them lastyear and i killed so many that now i've got five of my friends who hunt them now as well. They in turn have some friends who hunt them now. I won last years contest with 36 confirmed kills! Next year i'm gonna set traps so they cant run.

so keep your wolves in your national parks, but don't pretend they don't cause alot of damage outside the park. In fact, almost every pack that has left yellowstone has be associated with killing cattle, sheep or domestic dogs. Montana is not a big "wilderness" as you seem to think. Put them in your backyard if you like so much, keep them out of mine.

Last year, 700 cattle and 500 sheep were slaughtered by wolves in Wyoming alone. (estimates, U.S. department of Agriculture) Thats just about 1/2 million dollars in losses alone, much less the stress and saveragy the wolves do to the animals. You know, when I see some nut shooting wolves out of airplanes, I don't like it. But when I see a cow or an elk with his guts hanging out from a wolf attack, I don't like that ether. Snares? Where did that come from? Been reading funnybooks?

I think the reason that ppl feel the way they do is when the proposal for the introduction was for x ammount of wolves and now they are more the 3x that number. They have run all the elk out of yellowstone and are in areas where ranchers raise sheep and cattle. The problem with this is that preditors will kill what is easiest which happpens to be domestic animals.
