i was the only one of my hard rocking 20 year old or so friends listening to the traveling wilburys when they came out and i was mocked by the ozzy/mettalica/judas priest/iron maiden crowd.lol..but 20 years later,i still know roy has the best pure voice ive ever heard..followed closely (to me) by the lennon/mcartney duo,art garfunkel, the 2 chicks from the b-52's,ray charles, jackie wilson, dion, frankie valli, and eddie vedder...
OMG!! Absolutely the most amazing voice I have ever heard. I had goosebumps all over, totally blown away! RIP Roy Orbison, you will never be forgotten!
Stumbled upon this video by accident, but it wasn't an accident; it was fate and destiny colliding and exploding the genius that is this extraordinary man Roy Orbison all over my face. There are no words to describe this art i am listening to. I would like to take this time to thank Roy for his contribution to mankind. I love you big guy!
I've watched this video so many times..........his vocal on this song is absolutely outstanding/ amazing/ phenomenal/ extraordinary.......whichever superlative you choose to use, it doesn't matter, people it doesn't get better than this, so ENJOY.......you won't see an artist do this again in a hurry!!! No wonder he was thought of so highly by the best of the best......wow!!!!
Only connected to the Big "O" back in the mid 70's, boy wasn't I so lucky that I had all those years to enjoy his music; A tragic life, but he never moaned; miss him so much RIP Big "O"!
I was lucky enough to see Roy "live" three months before he died and I consider myself very BLESSED... When you talk to people about Roy the first thing they mention is his looks it makes me sick to my stomach can't they hear his angel voice that GOD did give him along with his song writing abilities.... I Thank God for the time we did have Roy and for God allowing the abilitiy to hear him... Thank You for Posting this video....RIP Roy and Barbara
It is a rare artist that has the ability to give you a physical reaction of some kind with their voice. For me the list is very small. Elvis Presley, Juice Newton, Art Garfunkel, and Roy Orbison. Elvis said that Roy had the best voice he ever herd.
He wore the glasses because the record exec who was signing him said something along the lines of, "He's so ugly, we need to find something to deal with that." The glasses were the answer.
@collins61 Ah no! .....Roy left his thick prescription eyeglasses on in airplane in around 1962 or 1963,Roy was forced to wear his Ray-Ban prescription sunglasses on stage and found that he preferred them. Orbinson was very shy and suffered from severe stage fright;wearing the sunglasses helped him hide somewhat from the audience. :)
@collins61 Roy was afflicted with five visual defects (hyperopia, severe astigmatism, presbyopia, anisometropia, strabismus). He first wore his Rx shades onstage when he left his regular specs on a plane, then later decided he liked the look. As for Roy being "ugly" -- by whose definition? Perhaps not what some would call handsome; but during their 10 beautiful years together, I would've gladly traded places with Barbara Orbison (and I doubt I'm the only woman who felt that way)!
What a great man, such a powerful perfect voice he sings with such emotion!!! It was a sad day for me when he passed away. Thanks for posting great quality.
Roy Orbison, what else can you say.....A legend, an amazing voice, one of the best that ever was. If this song doesn't get you "crying" as he sings, then you are not a true lover of MUSIC, the way it should be sung forever. Thank You Roy!!!!
@hiyadroogs The comment I made was about Crying, not Pretty Woman. While Bruce made good use of the overabundance of time allotted him, it was far from melodic and not creative what so ever. It was Bruce on a Pentatonic/Blues scale turning out tired riffs. He was slam dunked by Burton and Burton was doing his best to not show up Bruce.
With a voice as beautiful as this, it's not necessary to over egg the pudding with myths. Roy had a 2 & one half octave range & hits his highest note in performance or recording in this very song. 2 high D's briefly & lightly touched in head voice. To have 5 octaves, he would have to employ vocal fry so low pitched beneath the range of a basso profondo that only an elephant or a whale could hear it! He had a tenor voice. Many people do!
Roy Orbison was not blind. Many people think that because of the dark glasses. His vision was poor without the glasses though. His voice was incredible, it stretched over 3 octaves. He was incredible!
Summation of this video: Bruce Springsteen, perhaps the biggest musical star in the world at this point, is gazing up at Roy like the freshman cheerleader gawking at the Senior captain of the football team. Enough said.
Few people realize that Roy had been legally blind for most of his adult life. Not even a drivers license. Lost his Wife and family to a tragic fire, yet made more contributions to Rock and Roll than most of the legends. More than 55 years of his talent graced our lives. God Bless Him
Just stop, or present evidence of his "blind-ness". Lost his wife Claudette and their 2 sons in 2 different horrid events, you tool. You can't spend a minute to research details. Not about you....
is that Kris Kristofferson at 3:07 ?

Classic performance - so how come the strings and backing vocal tracks are omitted from this "enhanced Dolby mix?"

Can you imagine if he ever showed up on "The Voice"? They would have to cancel the show after that.

Nobody before, during or after his time hits those notes. Big applause for Bruce S. playing lead guitar. BTW, he had a five octave range.
MEH50caribe 3 months ago
@MEH50caribe There was no lead guitar. If there was one, it wouldn't be Springsteen. He's a songwriter, not a guitarist of any note.
collins61 2 months ago
@collins61 You obviously didn't hear his riffs during the instrumental of 'Pretty woman' then. It was just as creative & melodic as James Burton's.
