It's all made up and exaggerated though, everything he says. It's not "scripted", and to say he's a "character" is stretching it, but a lot of people are adamant that Karl isn't even playing up his idiocy which is quite silly I think.

yeah I agree, I think Ricky noticed him in the early days and sort of encouraged the sides of his character that were the funniest and that fit the show the best. Karl's not a character, but he does accentuate some aspects of his view of the world, whilst turning down others. I think he's actually quite clever but the way he expresses himself and the metaphors he uses make him sound daft. He'll connect an idea to something else that no-one else would.

Personally I think that, while that event may be true, many others take a while to become established as they improvise. The thing about Ricky squeezing Karl's head came about because a couple of weeks before, Karl mentioned that he enjoyed giving his cat's head a little squeeze. The cat idea was dropped and the head squeezing was transferred to Ricky doing it to Karl.

Sometimes Karl says things on the show as though they are true, when he's picked them up from Ricky on a previous week. "Why don't you want to feel your balls? Is it because they feel like a wet shammy leather?" Ricky asked one week. Another week Ricky asked only the first part and Karl himself said that it was because they felt like a wet shammy leather. It's basically trial and error, and an evolving character, compared to the Karl who listens back to the shows and understands its mechanics.
