This is an amazing version of this song! I love the percussion at the end.....really helps the musical climax!! Never heard of this group till now..but will be going to get their album on iTunes
This was played in the Elephantman at at the end when John Merrick died, a beautiful film about a lfe of a man with severe deformaties who had a love of the arts and music but was treated like an animal.
This breathtaking song was played in an academy award winning movie. The characters were played by Johnny Depp, Willeam Dafoe, Tom Berringer, Forest Whitaker, Keith David, Kevin Dillion, and Charlie Sheen. The movie was called PLATOON.
@krthorpe32 It was also played at the final scene of the final episode in one of the best British comedies ever. The characters were played by Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules. This comedy was called RED DWARF
Listen to the original for string quartet or the later string orchestra version. This is a pop-bastardized version, killed by unnecessary added lines, synths and drums: adding false drama to real drama negates the real drama. Take away the music flash and the glittery dresses, and you've got a less than top-notch classical quartet marketing themselves to a lower level than should be. Dreadful
@MuseDuCafe They're well-trained musicians likely exposing more people to classical than all the traditional string quartets combined. I appreciate traditional classical music, but you can't fault these girls for thinking outside the box and marketing themselves well. Snobbery won't make the masses appreciate classical. There's room for both.
@MuseDuCafe dont forget though, while this original style is amazing, the club version offers a healthy compromise between two very good and opposite genres of music, and that the club version is better in diffrent ways.
@MuseDuCafe Don't be such a snob. These girls are giving this song great exposure to what some people wouldn't have been familiar with. How can you fault that.
I saw the girls this afternoon at the Royal Albert Hall, supporting Kerry Ellis and Brian May on the Anthems tour........ Cracking musicians, and very spectacular performace. Nuff said.
This song is fantastic, but it's not the best version of it. You can't really perform the Adagio using just a string quartet - it's best played using a full string orchestra, with no frills. Oh and the drums at the end make me cringe every time!
So there are young people who have interest in real culture and music and not just the slum-influence junk shoveled by the pop-culture television networks!! We live in the 21st century: the object of living is to progress away from darkness and ignorance and crime and glorification of corruption and wickedness.
The first time I heard this piece about 30 years ago, I was shaken to the core. If Barber had never written anything else, this would be reason enough to hail him a legend.
samuel barbers adagio for string! performed the way it was written...for a string quartet NOT an orchrestra! :) beautiful piece! people at my school (manhattan school of music) are playing this! :)
@hyunsu1986 I think you may have your string quartet's a bit mixed up. The original performance was orchestrated. It was part of a string quartet (4 pieces), rather than for a string quartet (4 instruments).
this is inspiring, the music i play at school is really dull and boring, but eScala makes me want to practice my violin really bad haha. unfortunatley i have no fun music to practice...
@optimus83iron it does, it really does :') i got waaaay too esatic when i heard the beginning cos iv been looking for this song for bloody ages but you cant exactly ask someone 'hey whats that tunes that does daah dah daah daaaah?' and now iv pure and simply stubbled across it im tremendously enthused....and thus feel compelled to share my story with you hahaha :D
Aaaaand... Samuel Barber was an American born composer from Pennsylvania and wrote one the most beautifully orchestrated symphonies here. So any European that thinks America has no culture or sophistication can shove it!
The original version composed by Samuel Barber was written for a string quartet and later adapted for a full orchestra, so I feel that this version is closer to what Barber's original would have sounded like. :) yay.
Where have I heard this before? A movie? A game? I know I've heard it before. I think it's a very well done remake. A friend showed me these ladies recently and I'm definitely impressed.
I think some people around here need to know about MUSIC!!! This is not a song from DJ Tiesto, not from Orbit...this is Samuel Barber's song, and was composed January 1938 (wow, Tiesto was born like... 30 years after: 1969)
@GiovakyBond you are absolutely correct, however they arent called "Songs" but classical pieces. This particular piece has been used for anything and everything in the past, famous deaths, films etc but the most famous film it was used for is Platoon.
This is a nice rendition - at least with these girls you can hear them play as opposed to some of the later Bond tracks where the girls are so far down in the mix, you can barely hear them.
This is an Escala track. After Bond separated a few years ago, two of the girls helped form Escala, so all of their (Escala's) stuff is newer than Bond's.
As for the mix, I think Escala is going for a more true-to-the-original-work approach than Bond did, but I may be mistaken.
I don't think you are. I just discovered both a few weeks ago. And I've listened to a lot of both. And I've noticed I enjoy eScala more because they stay truer to the piece. Bond modernized stuff too much for my liking a lot of the time so much that they lost the original essence at times.
Samuel Barber wrote this beautiful piece when he was in his 20's. It was first performed in 1938 by the NBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Toscanini. Tiësto is a DJ in the Netherlands.
Correct. Apart from the choral version of this masterpiece called "Agnus Dei" (to those who are not familiar with it Yoogle it :)) this is by far my favorite classical piece. The drums at the end of it were a fine addition but somehow I think that the original was more emotional that this :) Nevertheless this is food for my hungry ears.
