  • You gave a guest lecture at my school not long ago. Very inspiring, keep up the good work :P

  • I've found the Holy Grail of controllers. I'm loosing, I'm loosing my sanity... (loved the CAN sample BTW)...

  • 2:20

  • fuck you and and fuck freebird.

  • FREEBIRD!!

  • I like how you move when you talk lol

  • FREE BIRD

  • Can someone tell me the name of the Q-bert sample at the intro?

  • @Mixikyr its the beginning of 'Jam on it' by newcleus

  • You and Beardyman need to team brother. Beautifully orchestrated.

  • epic fail :0(

  • anyone who is looking for the download links on controllerism website listed in the video: it is not hyperlinked anywhere on the main page. you have to follow the blog feed back through time until you can find it. There is a link included in an entry dated March 13th, 2011

  • really sick! check out my controllerism mixes if you have a min :D

  • dude amazing setup. Truly inspiring

  • FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR laughing with the freebird thing. AWESOME. :) :) :) :)

  • That looks very fun. I would like to learn/ :D

  • That is freakin awesome...

  • how did you program the smart nobs? im tryin to learn as much as i can about cotrolerism...

  • like this if ean golden sent you here

  • I totally want a freebird button!

  • How do you midi map your controller to play different clips in Ableton?

  • I know nothing about controllers and stuff but this was really good!

  • You don't have to change screen resolution to make Ableton interface bigger. Just go to Options and there is a dedicated parameter to zoom the whole thing. Cheers!

  • Amazing man. Really changed my perspective on a few things.

  • Some mad scientist stuff going on here! Nice.

  • oh man i love that 'can' song!

  • why the fuck would i want to play the piano when i can do this instead:O!?

  • realy cool. looks fun.. sounds nice too..cool breakdown 0.49

  • realy cool. looks fun.. sounds nice too..

  • @johndlfy records are a pain in the ass I would much rather mix my set from a laptop than lug record players and a create of records around. Its the quality of the music, not what you use to make it.

  • VERY NICE CONTROLLERIM!!! KEEP THE GREAT JOB!!!

  • I learned from him....he's a beast

  • dam, wish i had u as a mentor, lol

  • this is awesome! smart knobs are great :) multi-layered mapping is a b**** to make. need to know more about this.

  • @johnDfly Too late. Umad?

  • @cartesialive man not just up and down...there are many posituons to control parameters. ever thing what a dirty sanchez would do to your mix? hahahaha i agree the soft touchscreens that roger linn has been messing with are interesting. though maybe still nit that fun for the croud to watch.

  • smart

  • I hope someone comes up with a new type of interface soon.. buttons/faders/knobs/touchscreens arent really doin it.as well as hoped..

Also I hope the name controllerism does not stick, because its a bit shit really.

  • @cartesiaLive what type of control would be looking for? hmmm a midi holographic woman you can bone and as you do so it sends out midi cc?

  • @flux302 lol! Somehow I dont think "up/down/up/down/up/down" on a single parameter would be a very interesting performance :P

I really don't know yet.. I think a new way of thinking will be required.. rather than just an x-dimensional surface

One area that interests me is touch-screens with touch-feedback - eg, Maybe soft-screens with solid contour beneath the screen that rises/falls based on value? Or projection onto changing surfaces.. touch-screen is still in-the-box IMO though

  • it would be awesome if you guys make a vid showing how to do this... I'm selling my novation slMKII cause I'm not good mapping,,,, but i would love to keep it if I learn and DJ with it.... please I would appreciate some help on this... same to map a know to scroll crates or folders and files to pick songs to load on decks... Thanks.

  • FREEEBIRRRRD!!!

  • how do u map 1 knob to activate 3 fxs??? smartknob...

  • @djtavi77 really, really easily.

  • @dalviel ok? it would be awesome if you guys make a vid showing how to do this... I'm selling my novation slMKII cause I'm not good mapping,,,, but i would love to keep it if I learn and DJ with it.... please I would appreciate some help on this... same to map a know to scroll crates or folders and files to pick songs to load on decks... Thanks.

  • @djtavi77 Well MAX for Live has some pretty amazing potential, and its online community (including Moldover) has created plugins that have that functionality, so you can easily import them into Ableton. I'm assuming that's the software you use?

  • That CAN mashup is so sick!!!!

  • that's awesome setup the new instrument of the future the free bird thing was funny

  • HAHAHAH! good hob bro!

    Keep pushing.

  • 5:26 for best part

  • kodos for working "can" into your set. :)

  • Like.... this guy ^ ....made his own midi controllers... thats right... plural.

  • Not sure why people dislike this... Dont complain, prove yourself a better musician. @ Moldover: I did not realize that you made a circuitboard album. Props on more than this video man. Also, the MOJO looks sexy. Love the arcade style buttons! .... on the video... OCTAMASHER and beatlookup. ahhh... I dont even know where to begin... holy shit dude. (sexy)^2

  • You are a god among men, and that ending was hilarious

  • He must be a genius, that controller is beast.

    But a freebird button?

  • why the hell are the most voted comments parts of some angry discussion

  • You're a furius Man !

    Good

  • Awesome Video, I'd give it two thumbs up if I could. After about 8 hours I got everything to work. Having more than 2 beat jump would have been great. Spectacular layout none the less. Mad props and keep up the great work. Cheers. :o)

  • You remind me of Eddie Van Halen with your custom sound manipulation.

Although I'll always prefer the feel of vinyl over my controllers

I would have to say your technique is swift and deadly.

    (70s kung fu sample) lol

Are you able to do any live audio recording into your controller?

    ...vocals, guitar, bass, etc?

  • can i buy that controller off of you ^____^

  • this dude is seriously intelligent and a musical genius. anyone who disagrees with me can suck off a bieber.

  • what a fucking savage. i'd kill to be able to do that shit. that cd circuitboard thing is ultra sick too.

  • what kind of software u use

  • LOL freebird

  • maybe this is like when scratching started and it was wack, but then got insanely ill. But sadly a computer and custom controllers seem to takes away major constraints so it won't be iLL unless you take it up like 100 knotches and make it musical. ie dj qbert figured out you need music too.

  • damn good mix some crazzy ass expensive stuff i bet

  • @asfbi Not if you STEAL IT. jk

  • @gomachols he has played guitar for 18 years, ignoramus.

  • @ChunkieTehMaster what are you talking about?

  • fuckin sick mix!

  • @gomachols hey, ur gay

  • @gomachols You're a complete moron. Take your own advice about expressing yourself intelligently and acquire some intellect.

  • @KevinDolin Okay KevinDolin! Will do! Thanks so much for sharing! Do you have any recommendations on where I might pick up some intellect?

  • can is a band that comes from near where i live ! legendary ! and timeless ! .....big up CAN ....love your controler ! one love out of germany

  • all you haters... need a history lesson... you are just like the old fucks in the 40s-50s-60s who said rock-n-roll wasnt real music....

    haters gonna hate..

  • @kevkevdj hell yeah totally right man!!! so close minded people... and that is why they nevr get farder than their f@n bedroom, funny how they don't get bored doing always the same crap instead of exploring new stuff... welcome to the digital world you haters! go back to the nursing home and black n white tv... idiots... ur right kev

  • @kevkevdj better than that: they're like the people that told Mozart his music wasn't music.

  • did you make the plugin with MAX?

  • @Th3Kr4KeN back then there was no max as far as I know

  • I dig it!

  • this is an incredible breakdown giveaway of trade secrets. I love the open source approach and your organization is impeccable!

  • Nice faders on the RemoteSL!

What have you done with the rest of it?

  • it remember me that in the mid 1996 a japanese guy's use sensor on he's cloth to controle an mpc sampler like with a computer ^^ it's truly a controllerism. Depend if you consider doing music is playing using acoustic and electro acoustic stuff or just controling sample's loop, but it's more a DJ's approach of making music for me than playing music.

  • shit the custom hardware is insane.

  • this is pretty sick

  • honestly this reminds me of tim exiles setup, but far less complex

  • dammit i hate reaktor, it makes it so easy to do such complex stuff, no skill at all inn using beatlookup, tohugh its an amazing effect, damnit, it makes me quite jealous isnce reaktor is no easy feat to tackle either, and the time you end up spending arguably would pay off way more if you learned max instead

  • wow kids.

turntablism has enough issues being accepted without some nerd kid coming out with the statement "controllerism is just like turntablism".

    its nothing like turntablism.

its like production, or playing keyboards/synths.

sure its rythym based but so is all music.

i think its the 'ism', lol.

actually from 6mins in 'beat juggling/scratching'?!!!

    EPIC fail.

    lol.

still tho, nice stuff, pushing things forward can only be a good thing.

  • @Movezzzzzz It get's a little blurry when you see someone really jamming it out on a modded vestax VCI-100.. they're cutting, they're cueing, they're effecting, they're scratching.. it's not a turntable, but is it turntablism? I think this is why he chose to label it controlerism.. It's nice because it can cover any kind of controller keyboard drum pads dj controllers.. anything used to chop, mash, and trigger sound samples.

  • @rockbandmidi

my issue is with the comparision to turntablism. turntablism is with a turntable, its essentially analoge. this stuff is too vague, sure hes pressing keys and turning knobs, but with a click of a mouse those same switches do something different, its got way more in common with music production than turntablism. with such a broad playing field is it possible to make skill level comparisons? i mean what would the rules of a controllerism dmc be?!

  • @Movezzzzzz I hear you 100%. I think the DMC should remain pure. But things to get fuzzy nowadays.. is a DVS system still turntablism, or turntables being used for controllerism.. Again.. I think the DMC should remain pure--two turntables, a mixer, and a stack of wax. Or, maybe a 'pure' category (main event) and a sub category for 'no holds or equipment barred'

  • @rockbandmidi

i dont think you get what im saying. again, my issue is what the comparision to turntablism. this has little to nothing in common with turntablism. but whatever i wish you and your blossoming scene all the best.

  • @Movezzzzzz You're hilarious.

  • @planetery

    thanks :)

  • @Movezzzzzz Wasn't a compliment.

  • @planetery

    what you disagree with?

  • crazy awesome

  • Hey I've got a rofl box too!

  • how do you sift through all your clips on that oO

  • Last time I checked music was about SOUND. And it can from anything. From spoons, to tapping clay to Moldover's design, it comes down to what you hear. Surely this would remove all doubts about instruments :P Have you seen Kraftwerk, Numan, Jarre and a host of others? Enough said.

    Rock on Moldover!

  • Great setup! Learned a lot for my own project, thanks!

  • wow kids.

  • does anyone know what touch controlls this guy is embeding in his controller? I mean the long one that resembles a ruler (that he uses for pitch shifting) and the one on the left side of the keyboard.

  • @gmytrex That's a ribbon touch controller that was jacked from the top of an old Kurzweill K2500 sampling keyboard/synth that are no longer in production.

  • agreed. gold medal

  • hobbesthecat7 u're a fucking idiot i guess u where born that way.i'm so sorry ure a fuckin idiot

  • your right your right im sorry.. its just...... his face... but no no your right, gosh im sorry... but... his.. yeah your right, i apologize

  • theres just something about your face... i just wanna punch it in... just... change your face

  • @hobbesthecat7 lol. not cool. funny though.

  • @hobbesthecat7 LOLoudly

  • Software ?

  • @ThreeSidedSquareuk ableton live and some custom plugins

  • this guy is like the DJ shadow (turntabelism)

of this time (!) excellent! im a fan

  • DAMN SON. Nice mods on that controller!

  • @gomachols You deserve a medal for that comment.

  • does anyone know what program he is using?

  • nvm, he's using ableton

  • Very...Very nice

  • the girl talk of good music!

  • hes goooooooooooooooooood

  • LOL @ the Free Bird button.

But seriously, amazing ideas and execution.

  • Should I buy the Axiom Pro or the Novation SL MKII? I just want to compose great music

  • Novation all the way.

  • @gorgeousguile If you come from a piano background, pick the one that has the keyboard that feels best to your fingers. Both have pads, rotaries and sliders; making great music depends on a lot of other factors, but when the controller doesn't feel right, you'll feel annoyed every time you want to use it; major inspiration killer.

  • yeah ive had both and the novation is so much easier to use as it has automap which maps automatically basically .. it also has a lot more features ,,,,,,,,

  • yeah obviously your controller will not be a genius built hot rod like this one ...but yeah i would go with novation there solid and user friendly .... i have a novation remote 49sl compact and still haven't used it to its full potential ... would love to get an xy pad built in like this dude has ...

  • That free bird button is AWESOME. For those who dont understand it. It plays the Song

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd which is a great song

  • ...Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!!

    LOL!!!

    you're a genius!

  • what a free bird means????????

  • wow did you glue bits of cardboard to your black keys so you dont miss them with your fat spastic fingers?

  • AWESOME. Very inspiring, too; I've been looking for good ideas for sample-based live performance, and this is incredibly helpful.

  • Ur fucking brilliant man. novation better give u a job with them cause this is EPIC

  • Looks pretty fuckin interesting

  • Man dude, I have been thinking of switching over. I am not finding the beats I want to make just on vinyl samples alone if you know what I mean.

  • wtf is a free bird?

  • o.o

  • nano pad under the keyboard

  • I just made a free bird button on my keyboard.

The second you push it, it pops open iTunes and goes to town.

  • Freebird button. Moldover is a fucking genius.

  • dude WTF is that!? is that like 3 controllers mixed together

  • its just a novation remote sl but hes ripped it apart slightly haha

  • "slightly"?

  • can anyone tell me the name of the effect used at 1:08

  • Gate

  • whoa that is amazing. my favorite part was the hip hop over peanuts theme brilliant creation man

  • Utterly genius.

    FREEE BIIIRRRDD !!

  • "freebird button" lmfao

  • fuck free bird, kudos on Can's Vitamin C!

  • 5 Stars for the Freebird Button!

  • Hey douchebag--- did you see the video of him playing guitar? Last I checked that was a 'real instrument' Fuck I guess I should throw my midi controllers away they're not real instruments... KORG-- go out of business you do not product real instruments... Ableton, reaktor, and the like, please classify yourself under the catagory 'games' from now on--it certain that nothing produced by these products are considered music. Hey-- speaking of instruments.. man, why are you such a TOOL?

  • @rockbandmidi : thinking like that is so old fashioned.... The use of these new digital devices or tools can bring up a whole range of new possibilities, besides using real instruments. Having real good control over devices like this can be an art by itself... and can demand just as much or even more of your creativity as using a guitar or piano.

  • @11Aniek11 agree 100+10% I'm an ipod/ipad geek.. few realize how expressive an instrument it can be. Apps like thumbjam and morphwiz, bebot, they're revolutionary.People can say what they want about steve jobs and apple policy, but they have the hardware these creative devs need to make such great, never-before-conceived instruments. PS I'm not sure if it came through as such, but my comment was a sarcastic reaction to a weenie saying moldover couldn't play a 'real' instrument. Cheers!

  • jealous?

  • HA! My 3 year old pegged the sample at 5:00..."hey we got that!" it's from the dm2 mixman original install disc "gold sneaks" from "street level"... my 2 and 3 year olds go NUTS on the mixman and an old p3/600 toshiba laptop hooked up to my fat roland KC550 amp. Best part nowadays there's a midi driver for both mac and PC for the mixman and they can be had on ebay for about $25..

  • esto es una farsa chimbissima hijueputas perros dce la mierda

  • i play electronic music live, but thanks to you, maybe im witnsessing the birth of a new culture!!!! keepon the excellent work you are doing!!!

  • The "Free Bird" button will revolutionize DJing and Controllerists everywhere! Radical approaches! Good stuff! Be well.

    Peace,

    \A/

  • I think this is the BEST TUTORIAL I've ever seen on youtube!! The color-match is so simply that is brilliant!
