  • Okay Great! Thank you... I just like the food there and thought It would be a nice gesture. I can only say hello and goodbye in chinese. I go to a flea market here that has "Oriental Gifts" I joke around with the store owners but the language barrier is very frustrating... It's like I would love to talk to them about their backround & history and culture but I can't because of the language difference... I thought a gift would kind of be like a thank you and an acknowledgement of friendship...

  • Thanks for sharing! Very concise :-)

  • For the 2012 Chinese New Year, I want to give a gift to the girl in the Chinese restaurant I go to everyday. It's just my way of saying thank you... Can you tell me if that's okay to do? Is it appropriate? Is giving a small gift okay? It's just some red firecracker lights that say Good Fortune in chinese...

  • @sinsagoodmansbrother It's definitely okay if it's a small gift! Chinese are more accustomed to gifts during the New Year than Americans are! Also, since gifts are given for so many reasons in Chinese culture, she will more than likely NOT read anything into it. However, she may wonder what purpose you have for giving the gift, but will be patient to see over time what that is. More than likely, she'll mark it down as good customer relations.

  • Just wondering can't you also say it gong chi fa chai or gong hei fa choi.

  • @kaytekat11 yes, you can. she is saying the mandarin version, and you're thinking of the cantonese version. Both mean happy new year, mandarin chinese is just more widely known.

  • i cant wait to get in college! Im going to learn how to speak Chinese and Japanese

  • Mandarin sucks. Cantonese all the way.

  • Thanks! Would you mind writing the pin yin?
