I am as Southern as it gets and love our heritage. I have lived in Brazil for over a year back when I was a bull rider, to participate in the rodeos down there and get to know the country, lived in the several states there. While in the town of Americana, I met a couple of "Confederados" and one of them spoke perfect English, with a Southern accent. It was quite surreal and I was very proud. I learned Portuguese fluently there and now they are the ones surprised I can speak their language!
Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton, ... Away, away, away.... Oh I wish I was in Dixie, in dixie land i'll take my stand to live or die in dixie.... In Dixie Land where I was born, early on one frosty mornin, look away! Look away... :)
A true southerner would have stayed and not let the Union influence effect their way of life. Those Confederates who left the U.S are cowards and who let people push them around. Moving away just says you give up.
Really interesting story. My grandmother talked a little about my Confederate ancestors. It is so interesting to see people in Brazil that have the same connections to the old South. I live in Jacksonville Florida.
I am a member of both! I fix the copy machine at the museum for free and am a member of the SCV camp 1209, Jacksonville Florida. Send my your address and I'll add you to our mouthly newsletter list.
Well, good for them! This is a fascinating story. I had to sort of laugh when the one gentleman proclaimed he was a descendant of both his mother and his father! Aren't we all lol?!
I wish them the best and hope they can retain their heritage.

@ MrPontiacTansAm
when the confederates fled to brazil the war was already over. what would you have them do, keep fighting to the death of every southerner?
while a banzai charge may be admirable it is also foolish.
they probably just knew full well what was in store for them under the wrathful control of the north.
