I don't think it's going to be that bad. Gender identity is inborn, if it wasn't there wouldn't be transgender people, and the Reimer case wouldn't exist. The only thing I'm worried about is what will happen when the child starts expressing their gender identity, weather it matches what's 'down there' or not. So far I haven't seen anything that confirms the parents won't be too neutral.

My parents weren't like that, but just didn't discuss it and avoided the idea of sex differences, although yes, they told me that I was male. The problem was that since I grew up with just a brother, and they didn't talk to me about gender, I didn't learn that girls didn't have penises until the end of first grade, and believed that my testes were tumors or something until I asked my pediatrician. I can't imagine that this will turn out good for the kid in question.

I think they have really good intentions, but they're going about it in the wrong way. What I think would be a better idea is to tell the kid what their biological sex is, but let the kid play around with gender roles and see if the kid feels like it's a boy, or a girl. And if the two things match up, great. If not, take the kid to a therapist and see if maybe they had GID and if they do figure out what they want to do about that.

By dressing him/her up as both on different days, s/he gets to experience both types of treatment and therefore is able to realise which option makes them more comfortable. SEX is determined by your genitalia at birth. GENDER is taught to you through parents, teachers, peers, media. They are two very different things. Not saying biology doesn't play a role, but gender is socially constructed and we do have to LEARN how to act. Like they said, if the parents don't socialize the kid to be masculine or feminine, society will- and it will happen real quick. You are literally treated and socialized completely different depending on your sex the second you are born.

You're mostly correct- except that Gender is born as well. You mean Gender ROLES are taught.
Gender is a physical aspect- its located entirely in the brain. Current studies indicate that hormone levels effect whether a child's gender matches their sex.
The gender ROLES need to be blurred, but gender will always remain. There will always be people who identity as "masculine" "feminine" or somewhere in between.

Those parents clearly haven't heard about David Reimer- kid got his member burned off in a botched circumcision and was raised from infancy as a girl instead. Well it didn't work- he resisted constantly, eventually reverted to living as a guy and after a failed marriage killed himself. Gender itself isn't a social construct- it's a biological inevitability. Even if you're transgendered it's because you have one genders brain in anothers body.

My parents weren't like that, but just didn't discuss it and avoided the idea of sex differences, although yes, they told me that I was male. The problem was that since I grew up with just a brother, and they didn't talk to me about gender, I didn't learn that girls didn't have penises until the end of first grade, and believed that my testes were tumors or something until I asked my pediatrician. I can't imagine that this will turn out good for the kid in question.

Uhm, I think they tell the kid what it is. But I think they're doing a great thing. Why do you need to know the sex of a child you meet, anyway? Because you want to know "how" to treat him or her. Because we do treat men and women differently. Props to this couple for protesting that. The kid won't be messed up.

I think they have really good intentions, but they're going about it in the wrong way. What I think would be a better idea is to tell the kid what their biological sex is, but let the kid play around with gender roles and see if the kid feels like it's a boy, or a girl. And if the two things match up, great. If not, take the kid to a therapist and see if maybe they had GID and if they do figure out what they want to do about that.

Also, I have to disagree with the host on this one. Gender roles are TOTALLY learned! The roles assigned to a gender are developed within a culture and are taught to children by that culture. There is a tribe called the Tchambuli tribe that was studied by Margaret Mead. They have completely opposite gender roles. The women go out hunting and are dominant and in charge and the men are always worrying about their appearance and dependent on the women.

this is a terrible idea. Being raised in a family with a pretty heavy feminist influence(super mild compared to this), finding my place as a 'man' was that much harder. There are certain strengths and expectations that come with gender roles, and for a straight male at least, I feel it is especially important to recognize these. At the very least, to appeal to women. It has been my exploration of my masculinity that has helped me most in attraction and relationships.

Anna has this spot on. The idea of hiding the child's physical gender is so the world doesn't treat him/her solely as male or female. By dressing him/her up as both on different days, s/he gets to experience both types of treatment and therefore is able to realise which option makes them more comfortable. I wish every parent did this. I know I'd have benefited from it so much. Instead it took me 15 years to realise society was treating me incorrectly, and my parents even longer to accept my sex.

I think that the woman is only half-right. A lot of gender differences are biological. Male and female brains and hormones differ, and some male/female behavioural patterns will probably develop regardless of their treatment. However I also think modern views on gender roles also inform the development of sex-specific behaviours. It's been shown many times that parents treat boys and girls differently even as babies, and I wonder how much influence this has on final development...

I think its very important 4 a kid 2 understand his gender and what role his gender plays in the preservation of humanity and our way of life. A boy must understand that will grow 2 b a man and provide 4 his family and girl must understand that she will grow 2 be a woman, the backbone of the family. My thoughts really :)

That idea is a joke. You're conforming to the conservative ideology of what a family is. Not all families work in a, "Man provides for family, woman stays at home." You are forgetting single parent/widowed families, gay families, and families who don't conform to that idiotic roles that gender need to follow.

I think the ideal they wanted to instil upon their child is that they shouldn't have to- and won't necessarily- prescribe to the gender they were born with.
