  • mlony1 -The name is Mitch Ryder,..and the Detroit Wheels.NOT Eric Burdon. If you can look at the pictures of the two men and be unable to tell the difference,..you are blind.Sorry,.. :D

  • NOT Eric Burdon. LOL Does not even look anything like him. I love this song. These guys did some great stuff. Geesh...why do we have to get older...the numbers suk(sic). Almost as much as ending it all. Don't let this music die off....hope the younger folk listen and enjoy...these guys and many others really put a lot of time n effort into the songs.

  • I think that is Eric Burton and the animals - Not Mitck Ryder-??

  • Must be in the R & R H of F. The greatest of all garage bands.

  • Why was he asked to split with the detroit wheels? Was it cheaper without them? More money for the producer?

  • who cares what name is on his birth certificate..the dude could and did BRING it

  • @crotchboots Nothing rare about artists who take on a stage persona. That's been going on for decades.

  • for any of you in the detroit area, cactus will be in concert at the magic bag in ferndale on july 22.

  • What surprises me is the bassist if off-the-scale great on this song and others and he is placed on his own podium but the camera doesn't even give him a moment's glimpse. This guy MAKES this song with an energy and drive that never quits.

This was heavy metal before heavy metal came along.

  • Man. This is a clip from "Swingin Time", the after school dance show in Windsor, Ontario, accross the river from Detroit. This was everyday fare. Come home from school and you would never know who would appear. Bob Seger, Temptations, Mitch Ryder, Canned Heat, the list goes on. A guy from the neighborhood danced on this show in the audience with his girlfriend and earned local celebrity status.

  • You're shitting me about Wynona. God, I love her.

  • @ecnalubma696969

    Wynona!

  • Yeah . The lead guitar riff on this tune was so hot.

  • McCarty is one of the most underrated guitarists ever. Listen to his playing on the Cactus track "Parchman Farm".

  • Mitch & the Detoit Wheels (orig. group pictured above) were on a Murray The K TV special ... They did Jenny Take A Ride live & Jim McCarty took an extended solo that is still great ... even by todays standards (if anyone has a copy of that please let me know ) ... Jimmys still playing with Mystery Train & is absolutely fantastic.

  • Even by today's stavdards? Today's standards are garbage. are you kidding me. That's a insult.

  • @cw1310 ... OK - I stand corrected - what I meant was with all the shredding/Van Halen stuff that's out there now that wasn't then. McCarty has always been my very favorite ... had the pleasure of meeting him twice when he was in Cactus.

  • Now THIS is Rock N' Roll!!

  • What a great find! Ain't heard this song in a looong while.

    Five stars.

  • Needs to be louder, much louder. Mitch Ryder doesn't sound good at this volume. When it's loud, it knocks your socks off. And it was louder until someone muted it a year ago ...

  • Does anybody else think Mitch Ryder and the singer from The Sonics sound very similar? i do

  • Wonderful song. I bet people who were alive when this song came out can recall how old they were. I know I can. I was born in 1985.

  • this is a men? or women???

    lol

    jejeje

  • This song doesn't sound the same way it does when I hear it on the radio. Not in High Quality.

  • Is this song called "Jenny Takes A Ride" or CC Rider? I'm confused.

  • Both names apply because it is medley, a mixture of two or more songs together.

  • @mckinnons3 Just wanted to know that. Thanks for the reply.

  • le son n'est pas terrible mais c'est un super morceau

  • @Francissavh quoi?

  • The Bass player was as noisy as the late John Entwisle...

  • Yeah thanks binky, it is an old Ric 4001 bass.

  • That's a Rickenbaker bass.

  • Great cut. What kind of bass is that, a Mosrite?

  • You need to get some better audio for a classic like this. SACRILEGE!

  • Yeah whos got Breakout???

  • Anybody got 'Breakout' cant find it anywhere

  • @mykidsdadx4 I still listen to my copy after over 40 years. Terrific as ever.

  • without a doubt, the most kick-ass rock 'n roll song ever. play it loud!

  • Take a close look at the guitarist on the left on the opening shot. it is Jim McCarty, who went on to play for The Buddy Miles Express and Cactus! He is one of the best and most underrated guitarists of all-time!

  • Agreed.

  • Sorry, I meant to say that I agree with you about the political correctness bullshit.

  • By the way Fraud, Mitch did start his singing career as part of a group called the Pips, they were a black group. I agree with political correctness myself. Peace.

  • Fraud, I said that was what I heard. I know how his name was found in the phone book, and no I have no problem with THAT. would you have a problem if he started with a black band? Are you racist. From a WHITE guy.

  • "Racist?" I'm not sure; I mean I didn't vote for Obamammama, so I guess I'm a facist, right? Anyway, I'm just getting so sick of this polically correct, poor Negro- evil Whitey crap I've had to listen to all my life, and your remark ticked me off. Did I overreact? I don't think so, but if I did it sure wasn't the first time. Best wishes just the same.

    Frank, Bx, NY

  • I heard that Mitch started with black band members back then so the record company because of the racial overtones had himchange over the an all white band. No wonder he had so much soul in his voice. Can you imagine how he would have done if they left him alone?

  • Absolutely not true! Billy Levise (Picked stage name "Mitch Ryder" out of Detroit phone book, believe it, or not) has ALWAYS worked with all-white band; Do you have a problem with that or something?

  • Also, he DID sing with a black band called the Pips--the only white guy. He left because of some racial tensions-not him having issues but audience problems. They weren't signed with a record company. He also sang gospel with his dad in an all black congregation growing up.

  • Great to see a bit of the old boppin with the bird Robin seymour on CKLW channel 9 in windsor.Swing time had some great talents guest on the show...

  • Mitch Mitch Mitch!-pound for pound, the best rocker ever as evident in the shows I attended going back to 1967[Village Theatre]to his late Nineties show at the Bottom Line.

  • Damn - this is a funky tune - love the running bass!

  • When was this song first released?

  • Nobody really knows, because the song has been in the public domain for about 100 years and has been recorded hundreds of times by folks ranging from Elvis to Peggy Lee.

  • Thanks.

    When was this taped? 1964?

As far back as what year can you recall this great song being performed? Mid50s? By who?

  • Mitch Ryder's version shown here was probably done about mid 60's. I remember hearing Chuck Willis version on the radio in about 1957. The song gave birth to a dance craze called The Stroll about that time. According to Wiki , CC Rider was first recorded by blues singer Ma Rainey in 1924. Proves great rock n roll lives forever.

  • Thanks

  • From The Studios of CKLW, Windsor Ontario. Detroit's southern Canadian nieghbor. Robin Seymours' "Swinging TIme!"

  • Yeah never forget Rockin Robin

  • swinging time, that about sums it up,man how i would love to go back and not forward, cheer,s mate down under!!!!

  • all you young wanna be Muso,s take a good hard look how its done, now thats music son !!!!

  • Now that I have seen what he looks like..I cant believe that I used to dance with some much soul enthusiasm to Breakout

  • Hell Ride

  • Anyone seen "Who's that Knocking On My Door" Scorsese uses the Jenny Jenny part for a gang fight, really suited.

  • they rock!

  • such a great track...damn.

  • You dont have to tell me, Jimmy Cipiti is my cousin....

  • What REALLY SUCKS is that hardly anyone mentions

Mitch Ryder in conversations of 60's Detroit rock greats, but he and the boys are really boppin' on

"Jenny Take A Ride" as they do on their other hits.

Oh,and did you know that George Brett is 56 today, one day older than (Billy)Pierce Brosnan?

    Happy Birthdays,lads!!!!

  • Another rock and roll pioneer from the Detroit area.

Can't believe they put the Hall of Fame in Cleaveland, Ohio.

What influential rockstar, band, album or song ever came out of Cleaveland?

  • Maybe they wanted a neutral location? No ball teams in Cooperstown, that I'm aware of.

  • Didnt you guys ever hear of Jimmy Cipiti?

  • They put the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, because the term, "Rock-n-Roll" was coined by Allen Fried on WJW 850, in Cleveland and Allen held the first "rock" concert in Cleveland.. Rock was "born" in Cleveland..

  • The term Rock and Rolling was around way before Allen Fried it was a term used by black gospel church going people it wasa reference to their joy and church gospel music a feeling of rocking and rolling for the lord. .

  • Rocking and rolling was also a term used to describe the feverance of regligious people when they got to singing and prainsing the lord as in "Speaking In Tounges" the original phrases rocking and rolling and a "whole lot of shaking going on" was first a heard around around black religious gatherings and groups. also Quakers was a term to describe the religious groups who would shake in religiosity's acceptance singing and traditions. Rock and Rolll was born from black roots

  • No one said that Rock did not have black roots. That's an accepted fact. However, Freid was the first to put the two terms together and use "Rock-N-Roll" on the air. That's also a proven fact. So, while the music may not have originated in Cleveland, the phrase did. That's why the Hall of Fame is there. In addition, Cleveland had the absolute best radio market in the country in the 60's and 70's. Better than LA and NY

  • getting down with some real blue eyed rockin soul go daddy!!!

  • Yes lad! On a scale of my name being Jenny and this song being awesome, i think we both win.

A new rock and roll fact every day here:

    rockandrolltoday[DOT]blogspot[DOT]com

  • Thank you! Elvis/ should have been stuff. Who's the guy with the guitar riff? awesome from the 60's

  • Jim McCarty as a young lad

  • still gtar man in Detroit Jim McCarty...also played with Cactus

  • Yeah Jim McCarty still rocking hard. Did you know Cactus reunited after 30 yrs?

  • He's currently playing in 2 bands--The Hell Drivers, an awesome band that plays all Detroit rock and roll, and a blues band called Mystery Train. He's kickin" ass more than he ever has.

  • Thanks for the info, I left Detroit years ago, isnt Jimmy Mac playing with Cactus?

  • LUV IT

  • So many great songs by this band. So few videos - there's gotta be more out there...

  • A few months ago there were dozens of them. There was one from Shindig (I think) it was UNREAL... Go Go dancers in cages... White Levis!

  • Wow! Maybe the Shindig one will come back. I just checked and found a clip of 'Sock it to me baby' that wasn't there before. It's a little blurry but well worth seeing. There's also loads of recent stuff been posted but I'm more interested in the sixties clips.

  • It's unfortunate that a lot of that stuff doesn't stay for long.

  • Yea, there was another good clip of Jenny Take a Ride from Shivaree. That doesn't seem to be there any more.
