What was so hard about the cameo battle was the fact that Cless near enough locked you if you let him hit you with Majinken/Demon Fang/Sonic Chaos or was it Demonic Chaos for him to use, whatever it was it was the classic demon fang type of move, locked you since he'd spam the attack endlessly, and if you didn't do it correctly, you could never escape it until you are KO'ed and TBH Reverse Dolls/Sephira didn't help.
ToE is a hugely under-rated game, well i wouldn't say that, perhaps its the fact that it wasn't played as much since Tales wasn't that Huge when it came around, It is a fantastic game, and I love how magic works in that game, through Craymels, seriously awesome game, and I love the final battle with Shizel then Shizel Nereid, especially on the PSP version, 'Gates to Eternal Void, Show your Passage'
Hmm well, Phantasia was the first and it was introduced to the english speaking market through DeJap fan translation so it was near enough free, Symphonia was introduced worldwide thus got popularity, Destiny was the first to be released in America I believe that could contribute to its popularity through nostalgia factor, Symph was the first to be worldwide (I think) Destiny was first in US, Phantasia was the first game, yet why this game isnt popular baffles me.
@poketradersuk I have to admit, Phantasia not being popular still confuses me. To say that Cless doesn't have good skills, he has plenty like Jigenzan and such. I wonder why? O_O
I thought it was rather popular, but I know why it isn't or reasons, it's because of the bad, no... terrible GBA localised version the only true english version, the others PSX and SNES have fan translations and the PSP hasn't got a fan translation, whilst the gba english one was terrible, some mistranlations (Ragnarok was named Kangaroo throughout the game), framerate was slow too, basically it may have put people off Phantasia, on the other hand I love it (I have Snes version)
@poketradersuk I have the PSX version. I'd say, GBA version SUCKS. It's slow, maybe that's what put people of Phantasia. If only they'd release Ps1 Phantasia just like what they did with Ps1 Destiny, it would be popular too.
It probably would be, thing is Namco hate releasing Tales abroad, it's like they xenophobic or something (scared/antipathy towards foreign people) so they rarely release only games released by Team Symphonia are released such as Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia, Team Destiny have only released Destiny I believe, whilst all others havent hit foreign shores, kind of dissapointing really, Tales could be much more popular if they'd release abroad more often.
@poketradersuk Or is it because of the fact that namco are afraid that what Team Destiny released, which is 2-D games, won't be very popular with outside players because they now love the 3-D stuff?
@adikkuchan Well I wouldn't know since I am not affiliated with Namco, I was just speculating, the 2d reason may actually be possible but recent Team Destiny like Graces is sorta 3d right? so no excuses there, maybe it's fear of losing money, maybe their cheap in general NAMCO that is since they released Vesperia worldwide on Xbox360 then gave an updated better version on PS3 to only the japs, I think Namco are just lazy and fearful, remember it takes time to translate nd all
Part of the reason why Phantasia and Eternia likely aren't as popular is because half of their cast are essentially not fun to play as. Mint, Arche, Klarth, Keele, and Meredy have no physical skills to protect them, so all they can do is sit back and spellcast. Combined with subpar melee AI, and you're stuck playing a frontline fighter almost all the time.
Compare this to Destiny, where you could switch to player 2 to use any character, and they all had some melee capabilities.
In eternia you could switch to Farah, Max or even sigh... chat, you could switch to play as any of them, Farah was an ok character to use, also consider the fact that in your other message you talked about TOD2 and camera angle, need I remind you that they were never localised, only die hard fans would buy a jap game to play, this convo was all about why TOE TOP arent as popular both were localised
Max was basically a spellcaster with a gun. Chat also sort of suffered from the same lack of combos when compared to Rid & Farah.
None of the Tales series is particularly popular mostly due to Namco's fault. They never bother to advertise the series. When Symphonia was released, it was popular thanks to being one of the only RPGs on the GC, and because Nintendo made sure to market the shit out of it.
Of course, playing a spellcaster is a lot more fun if you have a friend to play with who can defend you, so that helps. But Phantasia and Eternia also suffer from no zoom out - if you're playing multiplayer, you can't always see everyone on the screen at once (compared to Tales of Destiny 2, which first started allowing the camera to zoom out to show the whole battlefield at once if it was necessary to see all players).
It's also what made GC Symphonia annoying (the no-zoom bug).
You mention the annoyance of GC Symphonia yet its probably what brought tales into a series that i liked worldwide due to first game for european audiences, in general TOE and TOP arent as popular but why? if people never had much of a problem with your zoom thingy from Symphonia, what other reasons is there? I understand TOP due to less Melee but Farah could easily be used, Max though not melee was fun and Chat well no comment
I was actually just referring to the camera bug specifically when I mentioned Symphonia (it wouldn't zoom out in multiplayer, something they fixed in the PS2 release). Otherwise, I'm quite fond of the game, as it got me into the series. But it always irked me when I played multiplayer that they didn't notice and fix something that important during playtesting.
Although I imported the PS2 now, so I don't have to worry bout that!
The worst part about the GBA release of translation is they chose to translate and release that, instead of something cool, like the GBA Nariki Dungeon games. >:(
The GBA translation was actually very accurate, aside from the Kangaroo thing (which was apparently caused by someone applying a spellchecker, d'oh). The reason a lot of people think it's a bad translation is because they played the SNES one first and... well... the SNES DeJap one is actually absolute crap. Seriously. If you look up Misblamed in TVTropes, it'll give you a decent explanation. Basically, Nintendo actually did a pretty good job of localizing, not DeJap.
For instance, the whole "Mint has that quiet elegance about her, but I bet Arche fucks like a tiger" line in the DeJap translation was nothing like what Cless said originally on the SNES. While they were talking about Mint and Asche, Cless was not vulgar or rude, at all. The GBA and PSX-fan translations are far, far more accurate than the shitty DeJap one. DeJap totally screwed around with the characters' lines.
However that still doesn't detract from the horrible speed of battle, it wasnt fluid it was kinda laggy and put me off slightly, besides I kinda liked DeJaps sure wasn't as brilliant however it was funny, The voice acting for GBA was kinda horrible to listen to but that could be due to the horrible sound quality of the GBA in general.
Don't get me wrong, the GBA is the worst port of the game and should never have been released. It's almost unplayable. The only, ONLY good thing about it is the translation being accurate, otherwise it sucks balls. The PSX fan translation or the PSP remake are much better gameplaywise, as is the SNES version which has a nice, fast paced battle system (but the SNES translation is still garbage and unfaithful to the original text).
Yeah but for some of us who dont like to risk Patching games or putting CFW on PSP to get PSX games on PSP it's impossible to play the PSX version by normal means, the SNES version is available through many methods, whilst GBA is unplayable, basically I think the reason for unpopularity lies at the heart of the GBA localisation, due to low advertising and bad image through GBA version of TOP it gave a negative feel to 2d version perhaps?
Hmm thing is I heard it's region locked, meaning since I am from the UK it aint going to work anyways, I am not modding a PSX or PS2, I used to have a modded PSX but it fucked up, I downloaded a PSX emulator and it wouldn't work so I pretty much gave up
@wheelalligator : I never got to play Phantasia for the SNES so I am thankful for the GBA port. Still, it is my least favorite Tales game due to frequent random battles. >_> I can not take one step without getting into battle.
Still, you get to hear the ever so famous "What the heck is that?" Haha!
Tales games, personally, I think they are better on consoles than handhelds.
Yeah - aside from the few handheld exclusives, the consoles tend to offer multiplayer which is a huge draw. Oh, and I agree about the encounter rate, although I've played a few games like Mother, Dragon Warrior, etc with high encounter rates, and at least Phantasia lets you get Holy Bottles to help avoid fights (and Mother too once you get about 1/4 of the way through the game).
Cless is probably the only true PRODIGY main character, he was said to be destined to master the sword, other mains weren't or so I believe, Reid is kinda but he isnt a prodigy he's more like messiah due to his high fibril, Cless' skills are really good though, he had to be, due to having to protect three squishy wizards/mages in the past haha, he's like the only melee character for a looong time and the only up close fighter in the SNES version
And actually, the attack is mislabeled. The "Albain/Albane Finality" is the real Meikuu Zanshouken, yet he yells it for his Hiou Zetsuenshou/Burning Phoenix clone.
@WayfstrthnU Really?? I thought Meikuu Zanshouken was the name of the Eternal Sword because of the word "ken" at the back, and yes, for each of his attack that is a Hi-Ougi like Dragon Demon Chaos, he calls that name, probably as a counter.
It's not EXACTLY the same. The tune is a little slower at the beginning, and I've heard the PSX version of Time to Take Up the Cross, and it didn't use the same instrumentation.
Ah the annoying thing about this Cameo is when he sonic blades you constantly to the point where moving is impossible and so is escaping its like once he's done that you have to shut down the console and try again, eventually i worked out a plan, Reverse Dolls and Megasonic Thrust Spam...... XD shockingly enough it worked like a charm
Wouldn't matter much if you don't get hurt too badly in the first place. Anyone who beats Cress and Arche without using tons of reverse dolls know how to dodge attacks and hit back without getting blocked (which is the *other* trigger -besides <2000HP for Meikuu Zanshouken),
The battle system in Eternia is a lot better (as it isn't easy to do infinites) but Symphonia has a better story and music (in general). Although I don't own a copy of Eternia, I would go with it.
