I'm 15 i posted bad comments to the rasicm in America when i was 12 i right now say fuck America with out America we wouldn't have rasicm or aids just fuck it
@LeBadman look at my comment I posted just be for this one. You might say kids have no respect for anyone but that was not the point Chris was trying to make so I'm sure you just hurt many kids feelings with that comment.
I'm 11 and I still go on websites like roblox but I have no facebook or twitter accounts. The only thing I do is make comments on apps or YouTube videos. I got a laptop for Christmas and I was hoping my dad wouldn't put parental controls on it because, I, honestly would never go to a bad website that I shouldn't be on.
I'm 16 and as far as I remember I have never posted anonymous insult on the Internet. And I've never insulted a stranger. But when I was 12 or 13 I saw people who were the same age as I was and I was really surprised how can they insult people who they even don't know. My parents didn't use any online protection software and I'm thankful for this. But for younger kids I think it would be appropriate to use some sort of protection software.
The best solution that has worked for ages (and for me) is to institutionalize your children - let them study and be locked up day and night in a college that they can't leave. There is proper restricted internet there and you get punished for breaking curfews. No problem. This is the way to raise an excellent child. They get very good jobs later. :)
@jonnybigj Children who grow up 'restricted' (I have been brought up like that and not in a light sense) turn out to be excellent, well mannered people. Culturally rich, intelligent. One should be happy one is not part of the sheeple.
@jonnybigj Teach the kids to defend themselves then. First verbally, then physically. Intelligence and Martial Arts is a good combination. :) Facebook is like a glass house. It's an invasion of privacy. Only sheeple join it. Social networking sucks anyway. It makes us less human.
"Children don't respect anybody nor themselves and that is a recipe for disaster." Very true lockergnome, very true. I acknowledge this because at my university I notice this all too much. These kids have no respect. No respect at all. For anybody. Not even for themselves. I dislike them very much.
I'm Sixteen, been on the computer since windows 2000, i think that people need common sence, and not to tell every detail because there are rapists n such, but hell no you aren't gonna supervise my internet, sounds like sopa to me but for kids
im 16, and i have gone to meet irl people i've met on the net twice, both times they were who they said they were and i have had no problems. obviosly im not going to go round just meeting strange people that add me on fb these are people that share an intrest of mine and live in the same area. we meet to discuss our hobby and play around. the hobby is yoyoing btw lol.
I'm 16 years old and I like to think that I'm pretty informed when it comes to keeping safe online. I learn something new every day when it comes to computers, tech, security, etc. Not every "child", is the things you said. Some are, yes, but some have finally decided to grow up and act their age.
I am 18 and have always been safe on the internet, because I was taught the rights and wrongs... but I fear for my 12 year old sister. My mother isn't like she was with me, she pays zero attention to what my sister does online, and I'm the one who has to guide her. The other day she was talking to a man of my age on webcam. (on MY laptop) I forced her off of it. It's just not the place for children who are unsupervised.
@himynameischris15 good to see you take care of your sis. a lot of parents dont realize how bad the internet is. And not many brothers would look out for there sisters like that. Some would even post pics of there sis on the internet. ITs ridiculous how some people act the internet.
Im scared to have a daughter this day and age lol. or even just a kid.
@edstar83 Have you ever seen a 21 year old with that much of a heavy beardgrowth? Not really man. I'm 28 and I don't have the roughness of his face. 20 year olds are pimplefaced kids with milkfaces.. I speak for the guys at my uni. lol
I'm fourteen, and though I do agree that most kids (even teens) should be supervised. In my case, it's different. I understand that the Internet has it's dangers, and I understand that there are predators out there ( whom try to conceal their identity). My parents, on the other hand, understand that the internet can be dangerous, but honestly, I'd say less so then me. The fact is that I myself am a geek, and technology is a passion of mine. Ex military here.. and trust me even at 16 you don't know squat The world is a scary place and it can get real fast. don't forget legal ramifications of what children can get you into if you own the IP.
It is funny that in some of the comments you see the eaxct problem laid out for you. Kids saying "oh I don't need to be watched because I know what I am doing and who to stay away from". What they don't understand is that a predator doesn't say hey I am a predator, you won't know they are bad til you are in real danger. As for me and my children I will watch their every move on the internet. If you don't know what is going on then you really don't know when to step in until it is too late.
for me depends on how old the person has. i mean a eight year old kid must be protected, but a 13/15 teenager not, because he is more mature. tutankhamon became King of egypt at 10
...should be respectful on the internet. It really gets on my nerves when someone whom I've never met before thinks that they have to right to talk shit about me and my opinions. That being said, you also have to remember that kids are gonna act like kids, and will do things that they wouldn't tell their parents about in real life as well. I would never tell my parents about some of the conversations I've had with my friends. That's part of being a teenager.
The internets is serious bushiness! But yeah, to me it depends on age. As itsamariokart said, there's a HUGE difference between a 10 year old and a 15 year old on the internet. I'm 16 and my parents have trusted me enough to have my own laptop, gaming system, and a lock on my door since i was 13. Honestly, from a "kid's" point of view, I don't think online predator's are that big of a problem. Most people my age, and even younger, know what to stay away from. I do, however, think that kids...
@Imappleboy I read the entire Microsoft EULA on Xbox360 (when the new dashboard came out) and it stated that minors (-18) are only allowed to play on xbox live with parental supervision. Who knows about these rules? No one. Who cares? No one. That's the sad part. Parents spoil their children way too much nowadays. They are their little darlings. They let them do whatever they want.
the internet is a scary place for gullible people.... but just look at the stats on child predators its almost always a close family member that does these things. teach your kids that everyone is a predator, not just the shady man sitting behind a computer screen
@BHarris25 I once tried to get 4chan (the website) banned.. because I saw friends of mine giving me links where there is a live stream of a girl who is going to commit suicide live on cam.. and everyone who visited that website was laughing their ass off with that?! What kind of sick people are they?! By the way.. I immediately broke my 'friendship' with that person because I found him so horrible for this. This is just one of the examples of what kind of people are out there..
Better that the parents protect the kids than the relying on the government nanny state for a one-size-fits-all approach. There's a level of trust but the parents should have an active involvement when guiding their children online.
they end up doing the opposite of what you hope for them but you just have to let them live their lives and decide no matter how much you hope they end up into tech and lego..etc
Parents cannot control own kids on Facebook - because parents don't have time for doing this one and parents are forcing to earn money instead of how to socialize kids. I saw too many examples of bad social behavior from kids online
My parents are idiots when it comes to tech. - I dont get enough for the work i script, and all the computers i have fixed for not just us, but other people- both hardware AND software related. Im only 15, going 16, and tech is what tommrow will depend on.. Trust me, you're right, parents should watch their children, but when your child is at a certain level- you should give them credit for what they do and will do in the future.
Kids who KNOW about computers, (i.e. Programming, Game Development, Malware Removal, Graphic Design, those who use it for 'good') shouldn't need to be protected since they know way too much to be in trouble. 80% of the others, yes. I see WAY too many kids who abuse the internet, and go on sites which get them, and themselves into trouble with malware and then they complain.
And trust me, I know. I'm 11, learning C++, Java, and I work with CryENGINE 3 and Maya, and Photoshop 'alternatives'. :)
@JB17Wagna Watching the news won't protect yourself. There are many 'risks' that NEVER make itself public.
There's things that people just 'assume'. Using your common sense will keep you safe, more than anything like programs or malware protection programs will.
@JB17Wagna But anyway, you gotta watch more than the news to be safe.
I specifically flashed my router and blocked specific IP's and domains in-case my family members who are usually less experienced venture into 'un-wanted' territory. I know how to set up additional security features, but I don't need them (my family is the biggest threat :S)
I think every child should be given a cheap computer with which he can mess around and truly experience the internet, unprotected. I am of the opinion that if you let a child make mistakes on a computer...it's only to the benifit because then he'll learn how to avoid and solve problems in the future. If you just tell him 'don't click this and this and stay away from that', the computer is safer but the child doesn't learn anything.
Kids do not have the emotional capability to what they post and respond to on the internet. But they still need to use the internet, because I been using YouTube ever since I was 9 years old back in 2005 and have had many accounts, I learned loads from that experieces and it made be a better person. Let the older generation crush the n00bs of the internet and make it be a lesson to them about how they should behave, argue and critically think about what they read.
No, I wouldn't let a predator in my home for ANY reason. I'd rather see them in jail where they can't take advantage of any children. That's where they belong.
The Internet is a very sick, dark and twisted place. Where psychotic people post dead bodies and urge children to kill themselves or murder their parents and "abuse" themselves on webcam. There are blogs and boards devoted to these dark topics moderated by psychopaths. If I had a child I wouldn't patronise their intellect and instead explain to them why the web is dangerous and show them that youtube videos are watched by 50+ yr old men who steal videos and put them onto cam sites.
What people don't realize is that these so called "predators" on the internet have no real social life. That's why they do all sorts of stuff online. I'd rather have someone look at child porn online where it's basically just pictures then to actually abuse actual children in real life.
"creepers" on the internet and predators in real life are two completely different types of people. The first is completely harmless.
WTF!!!. TALKING ABOUT ASSHOLES...The U.S. Senate voted Thursday to approve a defense authorization bill which included a provision that not only repealed the military ban on sodomy, but also repealed the ban on having sex with animals — or bestiality.
I started venturing then vast expanse of the internet significantly since I was nine. Six years later I fended for myself against all types of trolls and ridicules. But the media always seems to way over-exaggerate how many predators are on the internet. Regarding how 12 y/o's talk- nothing's going to change that. Kids will act like kids. I was once a foul-mouthed rager, but I grew out of it. Now I run a one-man interface design business and am very successful.
@Isthecakereallyalie Hmm, I often find people with Aspergers use it as an excuse to be a perfect asshole. Or people who claim to hav Aspergers so they can act like a perfect asshole or socially awkward. No offence to you though.
@derick1259 Aspergers is another bullshit syndrome the psychiatric department likes to invent. These defeciencies don't even exist. People made them up. It's sad really.
@derick1259 It's like that stupid internet meme: "You are being a troll.". Give me a break lol. Oh look at me, I have the has-own-opinion Syndrome! No wait, it's called being a troll! Seriously, youngsters think they are so cocky, but in the end they're just full of bullshit. What saddens me the most is that 99.9% of the people on the internet adhere to this crap.
@iSchmal I really like your comment, I am 16 years old, I want to be an interface designer for a living, I just want to ask you, was it difficult getting start? What courses did you take (if any)? And not to be specific, what is the range of your yearly income?
I agree with everything you said here. Yeah parents should monitor their kids on the internet. There are some dangerous people out on the internet. By the way I am 17.
sure internet is for freedom, I think it is very important to talk a lot with your kids and teach them about the danger. I have no idea how porn and stuff affects the kids but I know that I wouldn't want my kids to watch it until they are at least 15
@joshuaox8 One day you'll understand to proof-read your comments and realize that getting the top comment isn't all that the other kiddos make out to be. ;)
Kids need freedom to be honest. When I first started using the net at home I was around 11, (17 now) mostly I played video games but without the freedom I had I don't think I would have the knowledge I have now. The net helped me with spelling for example, when I couldn't spell or define a word I used Google to find the spelling and definition. Also sites like Wikipedia allowed me to further research into the subjects. One negative side would be that it drove me away from reading books.
You can't (and really, shouldn't) watch your kids 24/7. If you're too protective of them either they'll rebel big time or they'll be too weak to handle the real world on their own.
Yeah, there's some scary stuff on the internet. But instead of sheltering your children from it, let them know that it's out there and teach them how to deal with it. Teach them how to spot a predator, how to avoid being their victim.
Yes, the internet is a dangerous place and children need to be protected from it and it is the parents who should be protecting their children. The internet, or anything for that matter, does not need to be censored by a goverment like what SOPA would do, but it should be censored by parents. I wish the media would tell parents to watch their kids online. The internet is just as kind and friendly as the real world we live in, which can be a very scary place if you go down the wrong street.
The hole case of internet predators is a problem of parents not having the time, or should i say gumption to educate or discipline themselves, let alone their children on how to properly read between social, virtual and political lines of dialog in order to protect themselves.
Well, you also have to remember that some parents are just plain out stupid and hand their kid (lets say 10 year old) a computer/iphone/whatever and don't expect anything to happen... like they are shocked when they find out that their kid met someone online and had them "meet" for ice cream and got in a creepy white van >.> (plus to mention that alot of these kids online are completely oblivious to the world... if i ran the internet government i would set a strict age limit of lets say 13-14
The amount of hardcore porn I watched at 15 changed me forever I don't think I can ever go back to the innocent person that could jack off to a picture now I'm 20 and I need hardcore stuff. Dont let your kids become like me monitor them.
@silverkill95 A predator is an animal that hunts his prey silently.. waits for it.. pretends it's something else.. until BAM! It attacks. Then it's too late for the prey. This is a metaphor for 50 year old men that pretend to be nice to children until they catch them one day.
Kids are not idiots. they know how to be on the internet. There is no any reason for blocking or stalking, and that would be even against their privacy. Best way to protect kids online is to educate them and they will learn to watch out for predators and be careful about giving personal info to the web.
@MrNerd243 Umm, yah about that.... How many times do you hear about the idiots getting caught for something against the law because of Facebook? Did you hear about the idiots who robbed a store and then uploaded pictures on Facebook? The soccer team that was caught drinking because of Facebook? All the kids who suicide "due to" cyber-bullying? Not to mention you have to start browsing with them or else there is a huge chance your computer will get a virus because they click on Advertisements.
@lockergnome Hell, I'm under-aged myself. 16, specifically. I'm fully aware of what goes on around in the internet. I know who and who to not trust. My mom? Not... really that well. People eventually develop that instinct to figure out the threats and non-threats on the internet.
@MrNerd243 I agree 110% with you. But the problem is that parents are to scared to talk to their kids about things like online predator. A lot of parents need to grow up and tell their kids the truth about the world and stop lying to them. That's the only way kids will ever learn.
@MrNerd243 I agree that kids are not idiots. I'm a teenager myself, and I feel pretty well-educated on the issues that are out there, and I am very safety conscious when on the internet. I agree that trust cannot completely nullify the protection that should be in place, but I think education should be a much bigger factor than censorship. And forcing your kid to show you their history isn't gonna make them aware of their safety, it's going to make them find you to be a nuisance.
I have no problems with the current internet situation because I keep the real world from the virtual world and I have a thick skin to the internet, unlike cyberbullying victims.
Yes, times have changed, there are more threats than they were before. For the people saying no then they clearly don't understand the risks that inexperienced users have. To put it short the younger generation believe that they invented computer and are cocky.... that explains why fanboys have become retarted
I'm 18 and when I first started to use the internet I was like... 10. Me and my friends... Even in school! Searched up stuff that was wrong for children that age. Some of them knew websites that was just horrible and they'd be ewwing and laughing at it.
That's in school. Imagine at home. I wish when I was a bit younger than my parents cared for my security for online... Nothing terrible has happened. But I know when I have kids now... What ever they do online would be monitored.
Anyone 14 and under should be strictly monitored while online. First of all, most kids that young do not know how to protect themselves online and therefore are very vulnerable to viruses and such. Secondly, they don't understand that there are dangerous people online...predators go after the young because they are so easy to fool. Lastly, there is a lot of things online that young people probably shouldn't see..and I am not only referring to pornography.
@ProudAtheist90 -_- My 27 year old niece is as stupid as a 6 year old child.. she doesn't understand one shit of malware or risks. When an ad flashed on her screen saying she was the 1 millionth visitor and won a prize, she actually believed it. -_- No matter how old a person is, it's the ignorance that counts.
yes they should i was just on omeagle video chat and i saw a bunch of 12 year old looking kids. Every other person on omegle Video is a dude jacking off...

@himynameischris15 create a guest account(account with restrictions) for her with no password.
THEN block off the ports for the webcam or block the IP's of the sites you don't want her to use.
it's easy because you can go to your web browser's preferences/options and find out every site she's visited.
if the sites SEEM suspect to you, you could block them when you set up HER ACCOUNT.
Also, change YOUR password too.
Protect your little sister man.
good luck!

Anyway, the point is that, as long as kids learn to be respectful, there's no real problem with them (us?) being on the internet.
ggisedd 2 months ago
...should be respectful on the internet. That's part of being a teenager.
ggisedd 2 months ago

derick1259 2 months ago

Let the older generation crush the n00bs of the internet and make it be a lesson to them about how they should behave, argue and critically think about what they read.
derick1259 2 months ago
No, I wouldn't let a predator in my home for ANY reason. I'd rather see them in jail where they can't take advantage of any children. That's where they belong.
iXavier000 2 months ago

One negative side would be that it drove me away from reading books.

im 18, if u asked me this 2 or 3 years ago i would say F off, we (kids) are fine online.
but i wont lie i think parents need to be a little more observant in regards of what sites their children are getting access to.
that said, I don't think parents should be snooping on what sites their children are viewing but rather what sites they can access.
Its really up to the individual child and parent, if the parent thinks the child is mature enough to be trusted then less restrictions are needed IMO
grant11102 2 months ago

nobodypersonsomeone 2 months ago
You can't (and really, shouldn't) watch your kids 24/7. If you're too protective of them either they'll rebel big time or they'll be too weak to handle the real world on their own.
Yeah, there's some scary stuff on the internet. But instead of sheltering your children from it, let them know that it's out there and teach them how to deal with it. Teach them how to spot a predator, how to avoid being their victim.
Give the children tools to protect themselves.
pcgod8 2 months ago

@silverkill95 A predator is an animal that hunts his prey silently.. waits for it.. pretends it's something else.. until BAM! It attacks. Then it's too late for the prey. This is a metaphor for 50 year old men that pretend to be nice to children until they catch them one day.
LeBadman 2 months ago
Kids are not idiots. they know how to be on the internet. There is no any reason for blocking or stalking, and that would be even against their privacy. Best way to protect kids online is to educate them and they will learn to watch out for predators and be careful about giving personal info to the web.
Please parents, trust your kids.

I agree that trust cannot completely nullify the protection that should be in place, but I think education should be a much bigger factor than censorship. And forcing your kid to show you their history isn't gonna make them aware of their safety, it's going to make them find you to be a nuisance.

Secondly, they don't understand that there are dangerous people online...predators go after the young because they are so easy to fool. Lastly, there is a lot of things online that young people probably shouldn't see..and I am not only referring to pornography.
