@TheFearlessbro No. Valve developed Portal after hiring the creators of Narbacular Drop, a game they made as their final year project at DigiPen, which allowed the player to shoot 2 portals on walls to solve a series of puzzles.
@TheFearlessbro Prey is a first-person shooter and its portals are used to aid the player in killing enemies. Narbacular Drop is a puzzle game, as is Portal, which both use portals to solve puzzles. Sure, Prey put portals into a game first, but they used it for something entirely different, and I'd bet when those students were working on what became Narbacular Drop that they did not have Prey in mind.
@TheFearlessbro No, since 1995. After Rise of the Triad was completed, 3DRealms planned to make a "dark sci-fi game" with a real 3D engine. At the end of Summer of 1995, Joe Siegler announced that Prey had begun development. Originally, it was supposed to compete against Quake, and indeed, the very first screenshots of Prey (when Tom Hall directed the project) are very Quake-like. This trailer actually shows the SECOND attempt at Prey, with an engine made by Paul Schuytema.
@topdinero Yeah and Portal 1 was released in 2007 so it doesn't mean that they ripped the idea from Prey, they got the idea from the Narbacular Drop team and hired them :)
Damn, this looks mindblowing for 1998

Prey 2006 is the first retail game to feature dynamic portals, although Unreal (1998) featured static portals.

@TheFearlessbro If you're completely uneducated about the background and development history of Portal, sure, I suppose you could say that.
