gr8 landing, dude, but for the love of god, get rid of all that technology-crap, and fly the plane by feeling the way it was meant to. its an insult to the sport of flying gliders.
the noise in the back ground is a vario, it makes beeps. the beep's get faster and more frantic the faster the glider rises. the measurement on a vario usually goes from -10 to +10 in a glider, and around -1 to 0 you get the constant drone. the vario noise and needle is typically 1-2 seconds behind reality.
Thanks for the smooth landing. It was interesting to see that a glider isn't as quiet as I always assumed it would be. I'm curious if the electronics are all battery or if there's some kind of wind turbine generating elec for you?
wow its hard to tell altitude in a 2d video I was like wow they are pretty low are they going to make it. then I saw the little cars on the highway and then relized your much higher then I though you were.
Was it a 2-33 you were flying it looks like if form the cockpit but I'm not sure. oh never mind I saw the shadow its a High proformance glider not a trainer like a 2-33.
The buzzing noise is a variometer, which shows the instantaneous rate of descent. One of its main uses is to help glider pilots know where they can gain more altitude: warm air rises up in a spiral, and when the glider passes through this spiral the variometer will make the buzz go higher in tone to signal the rising air. Then the pilot can just stick to the spiral to get higher up in the air.
14 years old. 16 for powered flight. But its some serious money dude.... Go to Soar Minden in Nevada... thats where i went when i was 14... Awesome instructors... got my solo in 28 flights and it ran me about $6000... If your serious about it then go for it!
I'm glider pilot. You have to be 14 to get lessons and when you're 16 you can get your GPL (glider pilot license). to take passengers with you you have to be 18.

first time i sat in a glider was when i was your age, couldnt even reach our from the back seat to see the ground during flight. first year or so was flying for fun, but when i got 14-15 we started learning for the exams. depends on where you live but around here you can legally solo as a student at 16 and get your licence at 18.
its never too early to start, its a magnificent sport
@trx90rider 15 I think or at least in canada, 16 for your power licence. You might be able to take lessons now, but you will not be able to go solo until your 15 or 16. I would look up local gliding centres and ask them, if your in canada I highly recomand air cadets, its alot of work but you can win scolorships to learn both gliders and powered aircrat.
that's awesome!, i plan to start gliding and powered flight soon as soon as i can save up enough money i plan to go commercial but perhaps military flying C-130's in the Canadian air force
that beebing noise is the thermal indicator. thermals give you lift while in a glider and so they are very handy but most of the time you can turn it off. to be honest they piss me off while in the air after a while.
its not fuckin American tactics ,ignorant asshole I fly gliders and im 15 and i fly much better than that so don't pull than bullshit just cause he sucks doesn't mean we all do
and in America you can get you gliders license at 14
What a bad pilot! Very bad approach! Unsafe as hell. One bad estimation and he would have landed short. You have to circle overhead or next to the field and go into downwind from there. American flight taktics I guess.
Are you kidding? He came screaming in and still set down after crossing a third of the runway! With that much energy and such a very long runway, he had plenty of options open.
Worst glider approach. really unsafe!! One bad estimation and the would have never made it to the field!! Circle overhead, then go into downwind...oh well, american flight taktics I guess!
no. 1) the pilot has mentioned the wind direction
no. 2) the displaced threshold can take the impact of a glider so it doesn't matter where you land as long as it is on the runway or the displaced threshold.
The "noise" is from an audio-vario(meter). It senses rising or sinking air. Sailplane pilots use this tool to allow them to keep their eyes outside the cockpit yet receive an auditory signal as they seek thermals (lift).
Nice video, one very long final, seems like a bounce but very common. Very smooth landing. My finals are normally about one fifth of that. They last about 20 - 30 secs maximum. good work

very nice, I went solo in a K7 in 1997 from Dukeries Gliding Club, Gamston near Retford, nottingham, uk, did you do a circuit, was the final not too far back, still nice though, Andy Mckenna.
correct me if im wrong but, if done, could a solar powered glider that could hold three different pilots, hold enough lightweight food and water, enough space to lie back(while still in pilot position)be used so the 3 people could each fly for 8 hours and do anything else for the other 16?
Very smooth, very smooth. A question maybe I should ask Jeremy is, are long finals required or encouraged at Hollister? I'm used to much closer in patterns.
That wasn't a long final. I suspect the wide-angle of the shot makes it look that way. (And to answer you're question: long finals and exaggerated patterns are *not* encouraged at Hollister).
ive flown a glider before and know how hard its is to make such a smooth landing. I was with a pro on my first flight then did a second with me doing most of the stuff. I wasnt bad but i would count more on this guy than myself.
Awesome. I've been up with him a few times, but we've always landed the opposite way, over the buildings. I much prefer his landings to most of the 737's I find myself in these days.
its not even that hard though...its just the ailerons, you dont really have to do much, i guess it depends on the aircraft but they mostly stay up on it untill it gets to lower speed in which case you just tweek it once in a while.:P sorry i miss it alot havnt flown in a few months.
It's easier than multiple wheels. The wings are easy to keep level up to the stop because you still have aileron (wing bank) control at a very low speed. Steering is with the rudder. Stall speed is usually around 42 knots so you touch down slowly.
u did a pretty far off turn to finals but nice landing with a pretty long roll down the runway and u actually turned off when i fly we land in the grass runway
