  • Damn good landing. My hats off to the pilot. Well done.

  • gr8 landing, dude, but for the love of god, get rid of all that technology-crap, and fly the plane by feeling the way it was meant to. its an insult to the sport of flying gliders.

  • that was a superb touch down man. loved it.

  • Smooth landing but the gliding slope seems to be almost flat, maybe it's an illusion.

  • Wasn't that a very long approach for a glider? I thought that a glider approach had a much shorter final leg than that.

  • Excellent touch down.

  • nice smooth landing !

  • well done

  • great

  • Twin Astir without airbrakes right?

  • What is the electronic noise in the background??

  • Grob 103? recognise the front air vent.

the noise in the back ground is a vario, it makes beeps. the beep's get faster and more frantic the faster the glider rises. the measurement on a vario usually goes from -10 to +10 in a glider, and around -1 to 0 you get the constant drone. the vario noise and needle is typically 1-2 seconds behind reality.

  • No room for error. You go too low unlike a plane you don't have engines to power you back up. Being a glider pilot is pretty scary.

  • hello really it is a nice flight

  • Thanks for the smooth landing. It was interesting to see that a glider isn't as quiet as I always assumed it would be. I'm curious if the electronics are all battery or if there's some kind of wind turbine generating elec for you?

  • wow its hard to tell altitude in a 2d video I was like wow they are pretty low are they going to make it. then I saw the little cars on the highway and then relized your much higher then I though you were.

Was it a 2-33 you were flying it looks like if form the cockpit but I'm not sure. oh never mind I saw the shadow its a High proformance glider not a trainer like a 2-33.

Oh I miss flying so much.

  • What was that buzzing noise, some sort of audible air speed indicator?

  • @sking0369

The buzzing noise is a variometer, which shows the instantaneous rate of descent. One of its main uses is to help glider pilots know where they can gain more altitude: warm air rises up in a spiral, and when the glider passes through this spiral the variometer will make the buzz go higher in tone to signal the rising air. Then the pilot can just stick to the spiral to get higher up in the air.

  • @sking0369 that is the vario in the vsi and when u go up it makes a higher beep when u climb and a lower beep when you descend

  • @sking0369 its an acoustic variomter, wich tells whether the sorrounding air descends or climbs.

  • @sking0369 lol no its teh variometer...

  • @sking0369 Acustic Variometer

  • @sking0369 Probably the Variometer, which tells you whether the Air Mass around you is Rising or Sinking.

  • @ErichSlush It tells you if /you/ are rising or sinking.

  • @hrford \ Actually this sound is due to the AIM-9L Sidewinder cue. The missile is seeking the target... just kidding!

  • i am not Filmer with glider if you can get off the Rwy do you get a tow to parking or what i am sure you don't get out and pull it

  • Excellent video,thanks!

  • im 13 going to be 14 in april...how old you gotta be to take lessons?

  • 14 years old. 16 for powered flight. But its some serious money dude.... Go to Soar Minden in Nevada... thats where i went when i was 14... Awesome instructors... got my solo in 28 flights and it ran me about $6000... If your serious about it then go for it!

  • @trx90rider

I'm glider pilot. You have to be 14 to get lessons and when you're 16 you can get your GPL (glider pilot license). to take passengers with you you have to be 18.

For are all people who disagree, every country has it's own rules. This are the Dutch rules.

  • @DamnPilot What are the dutch rules for your PPL license? can you also start at your 14th with lessons?

  • @trx90rider

first time i sat in a glider was when i was your age, couldnt even reach our from the back seat to see the ground during flight. first year or so was flying for fun, but when i got 14-15 we started learning for the exams. depends on where you live but around here you can legally solo as a student at 16 and get your licence at 18.

its never too early to start, its a magnificent sport

  • @trx90rider 15 I think or at least in canada, 16 for your power licence. You might be able to take lessons now, but you will not be able to go solo until your 15 or 16. I would look up local gliding centres and ask them, if your in canada I highly recomand air cadets, its alot of work but you can win scolorships to learn both gliders and powered aircrat.

  • @fireflygirl246 It's 16 unless you're not in Britain. To fly solo in a glider but I think you can take lessons at 14.

  • im 12and want a pilots license asap...i fly rc gliders in englad at ivinghoe beacon

  • nice landing

  • R2D2 on board? lol

  • @adr712 variometer, lol

  • @adr712 variometer

  • @adr712 its guides in a glider that use sounds to tell you when you are not stable or level

  • a beautiful landing

  • Wow. Crazy.

  • lol im on my bros acount but im going gliding next week for cadets and im only 12 hehehe im excited :) looks like a hell of alot of fun :D

  • I've always wanted to fly in a glider, but there is none in my area.

  • That was a shollow approach for a non powered glider however

  • @kingair81r Not at all! Most of the 2 seated gliders will fly forever! For every meter they drop they will fly 38 meters..

He even still used airbrakes to decent faster.

Research before you post lame comments :)

    Im a glider pilot myself!

  • @xratzix 38/1 What is it? A Duo Discus?

  • Do you always have to land gliders on a runway...when my mum did this a few years ago she landed in a field?!

  • no, u can also land gliders on grass. like on my local airport, to not interfere with the traffic using the RWY.

  • I've never landed a glider myself, bt that looked pretty slick 2 me...

  • lovely landing.

  • how high did u guys get

  • Hi

I have been gliding for 26 years and also did power flyingfor 16 years.

    Message to vfalfa

The language you use and the intelect you display I would not let you near a glider never mind getting into it or flying it.

I somehow suspect this long approach was set up for the camera but certainly would never be acceptable in my book.

This was more like a powered aircraft approach.

Suppose this pilot have encountered some severe sink ???

  • that's awesome!, i plan to start gliding and powered flight soon as soon as i can save up enough money i plan to go commercial but perhaps military flying C-130's in the Canadian air force

  • I feel that the approach was too shallow. I would never be that far out on finals.

  • i agreee, it's a very long final.

  • You are a blow hard show off and obviously have been living too long

  • It souds like a powered glider perhaps a small turbine?

  • That's the wind, All gliders sound like that.

  • @bobalong131 are you talking about the variometer your hearing making that tone?

  • Was there a wheel on the nose or was it just scraping the concrete? If it was scraping the concrete, that glider won't last too long....

  • the glider has a little wheel in the front and one wheel in each side of the wing

  • can u turn off the variometre sound in gliders or you have to listen to it all the time?

  • You can turn it off!

  • that beebing noise is the thermal indicator. thermals give you lift while in a glider and so they are very handy but most of the time you can turn it off. to be honest they piss me off while in the air after a while.

  • looks a bit unsafe, no downwind and no circling by the threshold...

  • Well gliders have the right a way

  • Looked well judged to me for a light wind day.

  • if you look at the srting on the cockpit its slipping sideways meaning he is landing in a cross wind

  • its not fuckin American tactics ,ignorant asshole I fly gliders and im 15 and i fly much better than that so don't pull than bullshit just cause he sucks doesn't mean we all do

and in America you can get you gliders license at 14

  • you cant get your license till your 16 and have passed your written and oral exam, you need to re- read your SSA pamphlet

  • You have to be 16 to get your license in America. That right there shows that you are ignorant.

  • What a bad pilot! Very bad approach! Unsafe as hell. One bad estimation and he would have landed short. You have to circle overhead or next to the field and go into downwind from there. American flight taktics I guess.

    Greetings from Europe!!

  • Are you a pilot?

  • Are you kidding? He came screaming in and still set down after crossing a third of the runway! With that much energy and such a very long runway, he had plenty of options open.

  • Worst glider approach. really unsafe!! One bad estimation and the would have never made it to the field!! Circle overhead, then go into downwind...oh well, american flight taktics I guess!

    Greetings from Europe!

  • no. 1) the pilot has mentioned the wind direction

no. 2) the displaced threshold can take the impact of a glider so it doesn't matter where you land as long as it is on the runway or the displaced threshold.

  • The "noise" is from an audio-vario(meter). It senses rising or sinking air. Sailplane pilots use this tool to allow them to keep their eyes outside the cockpit yet receive an auditory signal as they seek thermals (lift).

  • This beep boop boop :-D is for the pilot if the Nose of the plane is to high (stall) or to low (overspeed)

  • the sounds your hearing are the Thermal (air temperature) indicators and direction indicators

  • wats with random boop boop beeping in the background

  • the beeping indicates air moving upward (thermals) or, if the tone is constant, downward moving air

  • glider pilot license

  • what kind of license do you need for that

  • Nice video, one very long final, seems like a bounce but very common. Very smooth landing. My finals are normally about one fifth of that. They last about 20 - 30 secs maximum. good work

  • I WANNA GLIDER LIKE THAT !!!! or at least make one

  • With mountains in the background it looks like Minden airport, Nevada. Am I right?

  • Nope! This was at Hollister, CA.

  • @cimex101 do you play flight simulator? cause theres a gliding mission around minden.

  • With a 'final' as long as that are you sure you were flying a glider? Or was it really a 747?

  • That'a a very long final. 1:20 at maybe 50 knots is about a mile and a quarter. I am more used to something like a half a mile, but it depends on the wind conditions, the obstacles, my estimated altitude in the turn from base leg, other traffic, etc.

  • Seemed like a very long final! Very nice though - keep up the good work!

  • Smooth landing...but there's a problem:

You're landing at an uncontrolled airport with fixed wing a/c and aparently, you never said a peep on the CTAF. Don't keep it a secret...let everyone know what your plans are so we can all get out your way. At 1:51 you crossed another runway. What was your plan if a Learjet was doing a straight-in approach on your runway or the crossing r/w ? He might be right behind you and above where neither of you can see each other.

  • it's ok at most uncontroled/glider ports when it's not busy. So, it is not a huge problem, but it looks to me that glider port get's much traffic, and they would be better off anouncing

  • In Australia, all gliders only have to calljoining downwind and don't need to do another call at all.

  • Yoiks...kinda hangin' your cheese out there on final aintcha?

  • god your vario has an annoying whine to it:D

  • The wise-crack here is obvious.

  • Im a private fixed wing airplain pilot and would love to fly a glider to practice approaches.. they say some of the bst pilots were glider pilots

  • My finals are usually a lot lot closer. That was fairly long, not quite sure if he did a curcuit or not.

  • i fly a ask21 and yh nice landing

  • Must be a pretty strong crosswind. That yaw string is bent way over once on the ground.

  • very nice, I went solo in a K7 in 1997 from Dukeries Gliding Club, Gamston near Retford, nottingham, uk, did you do a circuit, was the final not too far back, still nice though, Andy Mckenna.

  • correct me if im wrong but, if done, could a solar powered glider that could hold three different pilots, hold enough lightweight food and water, enough space to lie back(while still in pilot position)be used so the 3 people could each fly for 8 hours and do anything else for the other 16?

  • landing on one gear isn't harder than 3 gears

  • wrong. try it some time in a strong crosswind.

  • Very smooth, very smooth. A question maybe I should ask Jeremy is, are long finals required or encouraged at Hollister? I'm used to much closer in patterns.

  • That wasn't a long final. I suspect the wide-angle of the shot makes it look that way. (And to answer you're question: long finals and exaggerated patterns are *not* encouraged at Hollister).

  • That's an interesting one, I'd like to know too.

  • yes me too, that final seems to be veeery long, or is it a direct final, without circuit?

  • pilot865...could be a twin astre..

  • thanks i fly a Blanik L23

  • ive flown a glider before and know how hard its is to make such a smooth landing. I was with a pro on my first flight then did a second with me doing most of the stuff. I wasnt bad but i would count more on this guy than myself.

  • Not bad!

  • What Kind OF Glider?

  • Awesome. I've been up with him a few times, but we've always landed the opposite way, over the buildings. I much prefer his landings to most of the 737's I find myself in these days.

  • sick

  • It always amazes me how the glider pilots always manage to land the aircraft on only one wheel.

  • its just a matter of keeping it balanced on the main wheel, kindof like riding a bike

  • its not even that hard though...its just the ailerons, you dont really have to do much, i guess it depends on the aircraft but they mostly stay up on it untill it gets to lower speed in which case you just tweek it once in a while.:P sorry i miss it alot havnt flown in a few months.

  • It's easier than multiple wheels. The wings are easy to keep level up to the stop because you still have aileron (wing bank) control at a very low speed. Steering is with the rudder. Stall speed is usually around 42 knots so you touch down slowly.

  • It always amazes me how the glider pilots can land the aircraft on only one wheel.

I had a glider ride when I was 12 and it was amazing flying silently without the sound of a motor to ruin the ambience.

  • Wow...nice landing!

  • What Airfield is this please

  • Good lord... what a lengthy final...miles long. Nice to have such wide open spaces.

  • That was a really smooth landing. Nice.

  • What was that whining sound?

  • u did a pretty far off turn to finals but nice landing with a pretty long roll down the runway and u actually turned off when i fly we land in the grass runway

  • Bad landing ! On final you are much to low, I didn't see airbrakes during the final. If you would have encountered unforeseen sink in the final you would have been in deep trouble.

  • Lol somebody shut that vario up :D nice landing, nice hint of crosswind :D

  • i want be a glider pilot...

    watch my videos

  • Love that merging with the shadow of the plane and the plane.

  • that would be kool

  • cute vario :)

  • Nice landing!, I´m private pilot so I don´t know too much about gliders, what is that sound? Is like R2D2...best regards

  • the second landing was better :)

  • do they have spoilers? and whats the beeping sound?

  • Good video, thanks!!!

  • Cool. Yeah, every time I've been up with Z we've landed over those buildings at the other end. Coolest part is the shadow as you land.
