  • two minutes and nine seconds of straight quality.

  • @Nocturne2 rather funny video quality, though.

  • chill out man..a bit gnostic over here...you got giv me that though..is a touching song

  • for the 13 dislikes on this video...all of you don't know SHIT about music, and thats the truth!

  • this is music......talent, heart, soul.... my friends...fck lady gaga

  • hit the brakes on the stumble button

  • I'm assuming whoever disliked this doesn't have a soul.

  • James Gadson is clearly a G.

  • Was stumbling clicked stumble by accident was like woah back up

  • just found this on youtube, never heard of Bill Withers , but in first 30 seconds got that good-music-feeling and now i have listened this song 1st time in my life, i must say THAT'S PERFECT.

  • 13 people actually do have sunshine when she's gone....

  • To the younger viewers: That was the time, when "artists" could actually "play" an "instrument" and "write" a "song"... Just thought without the quotation marks it would be too ambiguous... A comment by a mid-twenty "musician"...

  • @ballytotw cool story brah

  • I am a sexy gal,but this song makes me feel the pain of a man when the gal goes away.

  • @summeerrloveee

I doubt you could properly articulate the feeling your trying to express.

When the love of a mans life leaves him behind, she takes with her the best of him. Because it was that love for that women that made him want to be the best. Take all that away and only a ghost of what he once was will remain.

  • do you have the video of what he says before he starts singing this song...its a really great intro to this great song

  • See more on James Gadson @ SoulDrummers . com

  • Awesome!

  • This song always gives me chills, Bill Withers' and Al Green's version are both so good.

  • how this isn't still played more i dont kno

  • awesome!

  • How do you turn a duck into a soul singer?

Stick it in the oven until its bill withers.

  • @schmagum dude nice one! made me laugh out loud lol!

  • @StringsOfAndersen spell check!

  • Best drumming I have ever seen in my life!

  • good old times.............

  • the drummer is feelin' the music, about as much as anyone could feel anything ever

  • @rootvalue dude just shut up

  • Now this is REAL music.

  • @KyleKepner Jesus is upset that you are indulging your auditory senses in this blasphemy.

  • @rootvalue.......... jesus gave him his voice and talent

  • @MyRod24 Hahaha, you can't be serious. I was joking, I'm not a religious nut. And where were you when Jesus supposedly performed this gift giving without anyone seeing or having even the slightest empirical evidence of doing so (not even a hint); how do you know that happened?

Yeah I believe a magical unicorn came down and moved my fingers because I have no evidence to believe that it actually happened, but a schizophrenic writer wrote it down and that's good enough for me. Just as plausible.

  • the drummer is just....so funky

  • I bet James knows where she went. Look at the smile on his face.

  • @smashingrapenuts

Cracks me up... he's definately pleased about something

  • Coming from a 23 yrs old man this is way before my time but I love it and wish music like this was like this now

  • look at the drummer.hahahaha

I want to look like this.

    DRUMMER IS A KING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @manir1988 James Gadson ahahahahahah what a legend!!!

Its such a dirty groove and he's smiling all the way though it! HAHAHA

  • I'm 14 k.. And today's music shit compared to this! I think this music needs to come back fast !

    - have a great day pplzz. ;)

  • Bill Withers! I have to agree with everyone else. Real music is dead.

  • stumbled

  • thanks for making me stop... such an awesome song.

  • I agree that there is always more bad music than good music in any era. But there is far more bad music today simply because of the internet and the ease of self production. You have to know what WAS good before you can have any idea what IS good. Bill Withers is classic and his backing band is amazing. You can still be hip to new music and enjoy the classics.

  • @bassclefpaco Absolutely! and thats exactly why we appreciate young artist today ( Alicia keys, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend) these are true artist that can use the path that the greats have paved for them to make a new revolution of GOOD music. something that makes you feel good when you listen to it. not something that just makes you want to shake your ass.

  • thank you for reminding me there is really good soulful music out there. respect

  • which old bugger stumbled this??

  • rrright here!

  • THIS IS WATS UP

  • What a talented band. Does not get better than Bill Withers and his well chosen band members.

  • Listen you guys! Bill Withers is great! Without a doubt.. But you need to stop sounding like your parents! Music back in the days etc. etc. There are a lot of GREAT artists out there. One of the reasons quality music dont get much air time is because people are listening to the music of there memories, and talking about the good old days. Gimmick music gets attention. If you have a good taste in music go out and find new artists that inspire you! That's my opinion anyway...

  • So true.

People seem to forget all of the bad music back than. They just remember the good. But every generation of music has far more bad music than good, people just tend to remember the good and forget the bad.

There are some amazing artists making music these days, you just have to dig for them, but it's worth it.

  • Thusly why i listen to Pandora. I can't even begin to say how many albums I have Bought because i heard it there.

    @Trolsted: you speak the truth

  • This is awesome. Enough said. Music today lacks this kind of art, heart, and soul.

  • God I wish I was alive when Soul was popular. To be surrounded with this instead of T-Pain and Lady Gaga would be so much better for the soul.

  • AMEN

  • @MrNiceGuy1090: I honestly could not agree more, and im 21.

  • @MrNiceGuy1090 you know, if you were alive when Soul was popular, you'd be in your sixties right now, right?

  • So dark and depressing... yet such a classic and wonderful song... What happened tot he soul in music? everything is a melting pot now; it's all sounding the same. Now I gotta go listen to some Isley Brothers... lol

  • soulful music is dead, with the exception of some indie artists, its all for the glitz and glam now, everything is synthesized, and zero skill is required, just money and/or contacts.

  • damn soul just vibes off this video

  • I grew up listening to the Dominoes, Orioles, etc, then the Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes, Earth, Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, etc. -- bringing more and more creative beauty and genius into my life. These artists had quality, charisma, charm and genius. I sincerely hope and pray that it is not lost forever. I hope and pray to live to see another generation of musicians like Bill Withers, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, et al.

  • Bill Withers is a genius. Like many geniuses of his time. Where are those geniuses in this generation? Michael Jackson is the all-time greatest of the geniuses, but there were many many many many many many many many more -- all throughout the late fifties, sixties, seventies and early eighties. That was the generation of greatness and genius. I am not going to even try to name a few because it would be an injustice to so many more. I just hope I live to see another generation of geniuses.

  • such chill passion

  • I mean... seriously... Who can skip this?

  • pure mastery! Love me some Bill Withers, go ahead Bill!

  • CLASSIC FIRE!!!

  • nobody's going to skip this :)

  • Amazing....so simple yet so powerful. The acoustic background is a support for the blues singing...wow just fantastic

  • Gadson!;)

  • Beautiful song!

  • sweet shit indeed...

  • Why can't drummers play like this anymore

    so light

    yet so hard

and in the groove god damn!

who is the drummer in this clip?

  • james gadson!!!

  • It's the truth, that's all i got to say....

  • This clip is from "The old grey whistle test" on bbc, really good

  • this is real music... truly real music!

  • sweet shit

  • forget it

  • who is the drummer?

  • lol thats what i was sayin!

i cant seem to find him on google

  • Drummer is James Gadson, one of the best timekeepers ever. Sick tight. Played with most of the motown bigs and is still around.

  • much thanks for that info

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for that info! He's obviously VERY talented. Understated, but you can tell he's a monster. I've wondered who he is for ages.

  • the drummer the chillest motherfucker ever like this other guy said 10 *

  • aint no pussy mainly

  • bill withers is the black john lennon

  • Ah man...before suits and money drove music, there were musicians driving music. Even on vinyl it was good, wait...they have CDs now. I dont think I can say I've heard any live acts that can vibe together now and still have a distinct sound and still sound hella good together...somehow, all that got lost with "I just wanna get paid". Maybe the soul will find its way back into music (all types) in the future.

  • Makes me think of my girl too :-)

  • the drummer is digging it deep.

  • wow, that's making music in it's highest

  • My man Bill, loved this song since day one, one thing i always liked aboutthe original LP was the guitar cord changes could be heard! yeah still a very cool refreshing jam! this is a jam from a Soliders heart you can tell, been there! BigRed1forever

  • i've been trying to get this song down for ages. 4 simple chords. simple melody. easy words. but every time i try to record, it comes out trash.

i just got no soul :(

  • I am totally with you!

I think this song is totally owned by Bill. Nobody can sing it and make it better, few have come close to him at all.

If I sing it, I do it by myself and give praise to Bill Himself. What a humble genius.

  • this song is soo beautiful :)

  • Beautiful. From the soul!

  • Love this man. Left the army or navy and started singing at 32. Incredible vibe. Incredible voice

  • Withers art has staying power because it was from the heart and unencumbered by the bullshit pigeonholing that the studios require today.
