The chase was put into the track in 1987 to make the track 'safer' after Mike Burgmann was killed on Conrod straight but i can think of atleast 8 cars that have ended up on their rooves there.
Barrel rolls are rarely deadly. The car slows gradually, scrubbing off speed every time it touches the ground. It's the jarring hits that cause the most damage, even ones that look innocent (i.e. Earnhardt).
This is why runoff areas on fast sections should ALWAYS be paved, whether asphalt or concrete. He went off track, the tire dug into the sand and he started rolling. Spinning off solid surfaces (e.g. turn 8 at Turkey in F1), the tires bite in the skid and the car stays upright.
@zxcv1234vcxz Not if you're talking about what happened to Matt Kenseth during last year's Aaron's 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. He went into a skid after being tapped from behind on the backstraight, spun on to the paved runoff area on the inside, as STILL flipped over, albeit nothing like what happened in this clip. If it moves, it CAN flip over.
@zxcv1234vcxz if the runoff areas on a ROAD COURSE are paved... drivers are going to die a lot more than they will if they risk going into a nasty roll. It is impossible to totally eliminate walls, tire barriers, guard rails, and what have you from having terrible angles at times on a road course because of their twisty nature. You need gravel traps to stop cars who are going out of control from hitting the wall at full force. If somebody loses their brakes, better to flip than hit a wall.
poor guy. last lap of last raace. cool crash though. I have a news paper cutting on my desk of this crash, realized it was the same halfway through the vid lol!

@rxi11 it seems surreal, but after all the mods they need to put in, racing breaks, roll cage, weight reduction, spring etc
it all adds up

No wonder the poor bugger was blind, did you see how red the 'whites' of his eyes were?
Yet another bigun at the Chase. Gotta respect that piece of track.

Wow, last lap on his last race! Looks more like a sprint car roll. He's in great shape considering he would've been shaken like a rag doll.
