It sounds like you are referrring to the sled tests of the kinetic energy penetrating warhead (just a guess, but I know there is video of it out there). Since then, test airframes have been built, for testing/validation of the aerodynamics of the RATTLRS. FWIW, I didn't pick the music or create the video (I believe Multimedia gets the blame).
Looks like the D-21 reinvented. Rods from god is interesting but ultimately a giveaway to the kinds of CEP they think they are gonna have to 'make up for'. _Not Collaterals Friendly_.
The kinetic energy penetrator warheads are quite accurate, ch1466. Payloads will be varied, so they can be selected for the desired mission or situation. FWIW, the vehicle completed and passed proof testing 28SEP07. Flight demonstrations are planned for early '08. And yes, it does resemble the D-21.
Good asset, if it can be delivered in next couple years, but I don't like the dependency on satellites. They are and will be increasingly vulnerable - rendering all dependent weapons impotent. Out goes deterrence? Just my view.
With everyone going guerilla (including main forces), the notion that you can wait for satellite targeting is ridiculous. I would, by far, rather be airborne with optics and Spot-SAR looking in over 'broadband' CDL. Either way the weapon is a 5 minute ride out but the GBU-39 at 60 grande for 60nm is rather less sticker shocking than a 500,000 dollar for 500nm cruise weapon.
finally something to compete with the russian brahmos and sunburn cruise missiles!
