Great, great version. They were on fire here. I love how Andy screws up a chord at 0:42 and the glare he gives Stewart at 1:25 when Stewart starts to rush. "Don't take off like a rocket, now, Stu!"
@typsypyg great observation at 1:25. I've watched this vid dozens of times and never noticed it. The Police were at their rawest and ass-kicking pinnacle..... then went commericial downhill from there.
Played this original VHS tape countless times. Sting and the Boys are at their pinnacle of coolness on the Zenyatta tour! I also bought Sting's "The Beat" shirt from Miles Copeland's now defunct record label, IRS Records.
Stewart Copeland: best dummer in rock history, next to Neil Peart. Un-effin-believably good. Reggae and jazz influenced, syncopated and with that incomparable rimshot CRACK!
Sting meant these early lyrics.Thats why i never slate the guy. Great song that made me think as a young lad [when others were enjoying crappy early house music] Copeland completely on fire again. Andy creative as usual
pardon my ignorance but what is the name of the effect that Summers uses on his guitar from the start (e.g. soon after Sting begins singing 'how can you say you're not responsible')?--many thanks!
A drummer friend of mine, who knew Copeland, told me if you look closely on the 3 drum skins in this cut on URGH, Stewart spelled out "Fuck" "You" "Cunt", while going thru a divorce.
One main reason The Police are so good: They compliment each other onstage-drumming, guitarplaying, singing=all in synch...Very few bands nowadays have that long-lasting quality and many are those older bands still touring like Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, et al...
Blonde hair was all the rage back then LOL--For years my folks said that I had "dirty blonde" hair but now that I'm in my 40s you wouldn't know it anymore LMAO--Love Live The Police=greatest band ever that's still touring!
Sting wound the Police up way too soon...he should have kept them as a going concern, the reunion is a little too late...they all look just a tad old...and i've heard they are now very jazzy!!! even dare i say it...sting like.
They're not so jazzy at all. I saw the Fenway show Sunday night and then Hartford, CT the following Tuesday. They do a bit of a blues jam during one song and if you consider that jazz, well, you might want to reconsider. They rocked hard both shows.
Since I posted that comment i have now seen them live here in NZ. Ok not jazzy but they sure sound more like stings solo stuff than the Police they were. Having said that they did ROCK!....I wonder if there will be a new album?? they were doing an Unplugged session but cancelled it.
Well said bro. IMHO they do not sound jazzy; it's just that 1) Andy had to key down the guitars so that Sting could reach the highs, and 2) his vocal phrasing reeks the AOR style he's had in the last 20 years; he's not The Police's lead vocalist anymore. Too bad his "Sting style" is tainting all those Police songs that are being played on tour.
yea copeland has a vvveerrryyy unique sound, which is EXTREMELY hard to imitate... His use of the hihat is REALLY difficult to play... especially message in a bottle or anything up tempo... GOING TO SEE THESE GUYS IN VANCOUVER IN MAYYY!!!! 2nd row flooor!1 woooooooo
This song pointed the way to Sting's later career.Guitar solo good example of Sting's quote in "Bring on the night" of how a rock solo has to "burn from the first bar".Hope the new tour tour works out!
Great clip from Urgh A Music War. This was the first song on this film/doc. At the very end they played Roxanne and So Lonely. USA network used to play this all on a show called Night Flight.
Yeah, I usually focus on Sting in my comments because I have such a huge crush on him, and he's extremely brilliant, but yes, Andy is great on the guitar, and Stewart is awesome on the drums!! :-)
This is from 8/28/80 - Fréjus, France at Les Arènes.
This was shot and used in the amazing film Urgh! A Music War (Stewart is wearing an Urgh! T-shirt). Footage from this show was also used in the Police Around The World film (VHS). XTC also played this show.
It seems that when some innocent die, all we can offer them is a page in some magazine. Too many cameras and not enough food. This is what we've seen.
Profound then, profound now.

Dynamics and syncopation; abilities by the great Stewart. Hence his non-repetitive fill-ins. Too bad Sting over does his singing.

Yeah, you can see in some pictures, that he had "Fuck", "Off", "You", and "Cunt" on 4 of his drum skins.
I heard that nowadays they say "Kiss", "Me", "You", "Fool".
