  • It seems that when some innocent die, all we can offer them is a page in some magazine. Too many cameras and not enough food. This is what we've seen.

    Profound then, profound now.

  • Dynamics and syncopation; abilities by the great Stewart. Hence his non-repetitive fill-ins. Too bad Sting over does his singing.

  • Stuart Copeland is the ultimate drummer, one of the best ever!

  • Anyone know what color stings bass is? Like what does fender dub it?

  • Love Andy's solo. Love Stewart's attitude. They are rockin' this song.

  • Great, great version. They were on fire here. I love how Andy screws up a chord at 0:42 and the glare he gives Stewart at 1:25 when Stewart starts to rush. "Don't take off like a rocket, now, Stu!"

  • @typsypyg great observation at 1:25. I've watched this vid dozens of times and never noticed it. The Police were at their rawest and ass-kicking pinnacle..... then went commericial downhill from there.

  • Copeland is beating those drums like they owe him money. Awesome live song and simply one of the best bands of all time.

  • Stewart f'ing Copeland...hitting everything and anything that ain't tied down...awesome.

  • COPELAND!!!

  • This from the movie 'URGH! A music war' circa 1980

  • .H4rryF

"But it has been dubbed over with the album track from "zenyatta mondatta"

    -----------------

    No, it hasn't. Sorry

  • twelveax7: "Another live performance of Driven to Tears by The Police. I'm not sure of the year (early 80's)"

    ----------------------------

According to other videos of this on youtube, this is france in august 1980.

But it has been dubbed over with the album track from "zenyatta mondatta "

  • awesome!

  • Played this original VHS tape countless times. Sting and the Boys are at their pinnacle of coolness on the Zenyatta tour! I also bought Sting's "The Beat" shirt from Miles Copeland's now defunct record label, IRS Records.

  • One of my favourite tunes too. Great live version, this one !

  • Stewart Copeland: best dummer in rock history, next to Neil Peart. Un-effin-believably good. Reggae and jazz influenced, syncopated and with that incomparable rimshot CRACK!

  • they have such an original sound, idk if anyone could duplicate their sound

  • This is from 1980 in France

  • Comment removed

  • Sting meant these early lyrics.Thats why i never slate the guy. Great song that made me think as a young lad [when others were enjoying crappy early house music] Copeland completely on fire again. Andy creative as usual

  • My fav Police song. Have you ever heard of anything like this song?

  • Yes its called Regae. Listen to some and you will understand its influence on this song,

  • Still jam on my bass to this class 29 years later.......

  • badass

  • I think this is the version on the Boxset.

  • What an amazing tune!

    They are music masters!

  • Thanks very much for the answer, Bytnyk!

  • pardon my ignorance but what is the name of the effect that Summers uses on his guitar from the start (e.g. soon after Sting begins singing 'how can you say you're not responsible')?--many thanks!

  • He's using a chorus pedal and an Echoplex.

  • goin to see rhe police and elvis costello aug.1.

  • this performance and song shit all over todays radio play

  • anything these guys play- or anyone from that time- shits all over aaany thiiing that comes out today, weather it makes it on the radio or not

  • A drummer friend of mine, who knew Copeland, told me if you look closely on the 3 drum skins in this cut on URGH, Stewart spelled out "Fuck" "You" "Cunt", while going thru a divorce.

  • Yeah, you can see in some pictures, that he had "Fuck", "Off", "You", and "Cunt" on 4 of his drum skins.

I heard that nowadays they say "Kiss", "Me", "You", "Fool".

  • I guess a little bit older, a bit wiser, and less bitter

  • That was actually directed to Sting.

  • this is a fucking trippy song. fuck.

  • this is from a movie i saw in vh1 classic

its a bunch of music videos of the 80's in a documentary style movie

  • "Urgh! A Music War" is its name; you sound as if you have no idea of how important a document that is.

  • i dont give a fuck about the name of the movie

    its all about the music

    the police rocks!

  • Ditto; no one gives a flying fuck about you either.

  • i guess u have self esteem issues

  • THe police....f*cking good group..I hate today´s music.

beyonce...bon jovi, rage, rooten grungers etc...puajsggggggggggggggghss

  • if by "rage" you mean "rage against the machine", then u r wrong

they are probably the best rap/metal fusion band ever

  • One main reason The Police are so good: They compliment each other onstage-drumming, guitarplaying, singing=all in synch...Very few bands nowadays have that long-lasting quality and many are those older bands still touring like Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, et al...

  • Blonde hair was all the rage back then LOL--For years my folks said that I had "dirty blonde" hair but now that I'm in my 40s you wouldn't know it anymore LMAO--Love Live The Police=greatest band ever that's still touring!

  • They're all blonde!

  • yeyo !!!!!!

  • Sound isn't from this gig - dual rhythm guitars, harmonized vocals.

  • copeland is doing the harmony

  • Sure - and the additional guitars, too...

  • additional guitars??

  • the police are so chill, andy kicks ass on the guitar

  • Seems that Andy has never changed his guitar!

  • Sting wound the Police up way too soon...he should have kept them as a going concern, the reunion is a little too late...they all look just a tad old...and i've heard they are now very jazzy!!! even dare i say it...sting like.

  • They're not so jazzy at all. I saw the Fenway show Sunday night and then Hartford, CT the following Tuesday. They do a bit of a blues jam during one song and if you consider that jazz, well, you might want to reconsider. They rocked hard both shows.

  • Since I posted that comment i have now seen them live here in NZ. Ok not jazzy but they sure sound more like stings solo stuff than the Police they were. Having said that they did ROCK!....I wonder if there will be a new album?? they were doing an Unplugged session but cancelled it.

  • Well said bro. IMHO they do not sound jazzy; it's just that 1) Andy had to key down the guitars so that Sting could reach the highs, and 2) his vocal phrasing reeks the AOR style he's had in the last 20 years; he's not The Police's lead vocalist anymore. Too bad his "Sting style" is tainting all those Police songs that are being played on tour.

  • Yes it has been overdubbed. Andy Summers hands are not following the track at 00.40.

  • that's not overdubbed, the video is slightly out of sync with the audio... you can see it thru the whole vid.

  • I hope THE POLICE decide to reclaim their mantle as Human Rights activists and help expose Castro's Totalitarian Regime for what it is.

  • This is from the film "Urgh! A Music War".

  • THE YEAR: 1981.

    EXCELENT, BY THE WAY

  • August, 1980.....by the way. This song was unreleased.

  • sounds like it's been overdubbed in the studio with a vocal harmony

  • I noticed that too. The audience' cheering is dubbed too at some points.

  • copeland isnt just a drummer, he is the ultimate rythmatist!!!

  • doesnt matter what angle neil peart looks at me, iu am a better drummer, and so is bruford

  • Anybody know of a tab for the guitar in this song? Theres aboslutely nothing out there.

  • Stewart is still the master of the hihat

  • Yes! One of my favorites!

  • yea copeland has a vvveerrryyy unique sound, which is EXTREMELY hard to imitate... His use of the hihat is REALLY difficult to play... especially message in a bottle or anything up tempo... GOING TO SEE THESE GUYS IN VANCOUVER IN MAYYY!!!! 2nd row flooor!1 woooooooo

  • yaaaaa my favorite police song! rock on!

  • Stuart Copeland is, in my opinion, the greatest rock drummer to ever walk this earth.

  • This is far and a way the best performance of Driven to Tears I have come across. It really goes into overdrive.

  • This song pointed the way to Sting's later career.Guitar solo good example of Sting's quote in "Bring on the night" of how a rock solo has to "burn from the first bar".Hope the new tour tour works out!

  • STEWART COPELAND!

  • Great clip from Urgh A Music War. This was the first song on this film/doc. At the very end they played Roxanne and So Lonely. USA network used to play this all on a show called Night Flight.

  • Stuart Copeland your my hero...

Love watching him in action, and probably my fvourite police song too. Thanks for posting.

  • Favorite police song, period! Thanks for posting.

  • I agree. No other song of theirs is better.

  • Copeland is a machine. This an awesome video and a great lesser known police song.

  • sweet, dudes! this is one my favs on them. ery glad u posted it! Millions of thanks!

  • Yeah, I usually focus on Sting in my comments because I have such a huge crush on him, and he's extremely brilliant, but yes, Andy is great on the guitar, and Stewart is awesome on the drums!! :-)

  • Stewart is absolutely brilliant. ON FIRE!!

  • This is from 8/28/80 - Fréjus, France at Les Arènes.

This was shot and used in the amazing film Urgh! A Music War (Stewart is wearing an Urgh! T-shirt). Footage from this show was also used in the Police Around The World film (VHS). XTC also played this show.

  • thanks so much for the info, also thanks to twelveax7 for posting. i can't get enough of stewart!

  • Andy's solo is great!
